Abstract

Abstract The objectives of this research were to find out the kinds of polite expressions used  by  teachers  in  teaching  English  in  the  classroom  and  effects  of  polite expressions  used  by  teachers  to  students.  The researcher applied descriptive qualitative research and used purposive sampling in getting the data. The subject of this research was one English teacher of SMP 24 Makassar.  The researcher did classroom observation by recording the teacher’s activities and analyzed it through Brown  and  Levinson’s theory of politeness strategies. The researcher found  that  some  polite  expressions  of  strategies  that  the  teacher  used is divided  into  two  types.  First,  Positive  Politeness  (PP) such as  greetings, notice and attend the  hearer, exaggerate, intensify interest of hearer, use in-group identity makers, seeking agreement,  presuppose/  raise/  assert  common  ground,  include  both  speaker and  hearer  in  the  activity,  giving  or  asking  reasons,  assume  or  assert reciprocity and giving gifts to hearer (goods, sympathy); and Negative Politeness (NP)  such  as  Being conventionally indirect, Questions, Minimize the imposition, Giving deference, Apologize,  Nominalize.  The effects to students are:  being motivated in their study, student’s attitude (affective), respect to teacher, self-confidence, being active and attending in teaching learning process, and honest.Abstrak Ekspresi Kesopanan yang Digunakan oleh Guru dalam Mengajar Bahasa Inggris di Kelas. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui jenis ekspresi kesopanan yang digunakan oleh guru dalam mengajar bahasa Inggris di kelas dan efek dari ekspresi kesopanan yang digunakan oleh guru kepada siswa. Ini adalah penelitian deskriptif kualitatif yang menggunakan purposive sampling untuk mendapatkan data. Subjek penelitian ini adalah salah seorang guru Bahasa Inggris SMP 24 Makassar. Peneliti melakukan observasi kelas dengan merekam aktivitas guru dan dianalisis meggunakan teori strategi kesantunan Brown dan Levinson. Peneliti menemukan bahwa ekspresi kesopanan yang digunakan guru dibagi menjadi dua jenis. Pertama, Kesopanan Positif (KP) seperti salam, pemberitahuan dan menyapa pendengar, membesar-besarkan, mengintensifkan kepentingan pendengar, gunakan pembuat identitas dalam kelompok, mencari kesepakatan, mengandaikan / angkat / menegaskan, mengikutsertakan pembicara dan pendengar dalam kegiatan, memberi atau meminta alasan, mengasumsikan atau menegaskan timbal balik dan memberikan hadiah kepada pendengar (barang, simpati); dan kesopanan negatif (np) seperti menjadi konvensional tidak langsung, pertanyaan, minimalkan pembebanan, memberikan rasa hormat, minta maaf, nominalize. Efek untuk siswa: termotivasi dalam pelajaran mereka, sikap siswa (afektif), sehubungan dengan guru, kepercayaan diri, aktif dan menghadiri proses belajar mengajar, serta jujur.

Abstract

AbstractThis research studied about the onomatopoeia in Robert Vendetti’s comic “The Flash”. The aims of this research was to find the kinds of onomatopoeia that are used by the author in The Flash comics and to know the lexical and contextual meanings of those onomatopoeia words in The Flash comic. This research applied descriptive qualitative method where the data were analyzed through Bredin’s theory. The researcher found that there are twenty-nine Onomatopoeia words that applied in The Flash comic and there are some onomatopoeia words that has no lexical meaning and some contextual meaning are similar with the lexical meaning. The researcher concluded that most of onomatopoeia words that applied in The Flash comic is Direct Onomatopoeia and there are only two Associative Onomatopoeia that applied in The Flash comic. The implication of this research is to give more description and comprehending about onomatopoeia. Moreover, it can be a reference for the student of Adab and Humanities faculty who attracted to observe the similar research. AbstrakThe Onomatopoeia in Robert Vendetti’s Comic “The Flash”. Penelitian ini belajar tentang onomatopoeia di Robert Vendetti komik "Flash". Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menemukan jenis onomatopoeia yang digunakan oleh penulis dalam komik Flash dan mengenal makna leksikal dan kontekstual kata-kata onomatopoeia dalam komik Flash. Penelitian ini menerapkan metode kualitatif deskriptif yang mana data dianalisis melalui teori Bredin's. Peneliti menemukan bahwa ada dua puluh sembilan Onomatopoeia kata yang diterapkan dalam komik Flash dan ada beberapa onomatopoeia kata-kata yang tidak ada artinya leksikal dan beberapa arti kontekstual sama dengan makna leksikal. Peneliti menyimpulkan bahwa sebagian besar kata-kata onomatopoeia yang diterapkan dalam komik Flash adalah Onomatopoeia langsung dan ada hanya dua Onomatopoeia asosiatif yang diterapkan dalam komik Flash. Implikasi dari penelitian ini adalah untuk memberikan keterangan lain dan memahami tentang onomatopoeia. Selain itu, dapat menjadi referensi untuk mahasiswa Fakultas Adab dan humaniora yang menarik untuk mengamati penelitian serupa.

Abstract

This thesis studied about archetype analysis of Perseus’ journey in Clash of the Titans 2010 film. The aim of this research was to describe archetype patterns being reflected of Perseus’ journey in Clash of the Titans 2010 film by Louis Letterier. This research applied qualitative method where the data were analyzed through Campbell’s theory about archetype. The researcher chose note taking as the instrument of the research. The researcher found that there were six archetype characters, eight symbols of archetype symbols, and three phases of situation archetype. Therefore, this research can be concluded that Clash of the Titans 2010 film showed six archetype characters where Perseus himself as hero, eight archetype symbols, and three phases of archetype situation are separation, initiation, and return. The implication of this research is to give more information, description and comprehending about archetype. Moreover, it can be a reference for the student of Adab and Humanities faculty who attracted to observe the similar research.

Abstract

This research discussed students’ ability in analysing ambiguous reference in written text. The objectives of this research were to find out students’ ability, and the way of the seventh-semester students of English and Literature Department (2016) in analysing the given extracts. The Researchers used quantitative and qualitative methods for collecting and analysing data. The data source was the seventh-semester students of English and Literature Department (2016). The Researchers used paper test (close-ended and open-ended question) as the instrument to get the data. As the procedure of collecting data, the Researchers gave the students the test and the instruction to answer the test. The Researchers then collected the paper after the students answered the tests. The Researchers used Halliday and Hasan’s reference theory which focusing on personal reference. Based on the findings and discussion, the Researchers found that 1 student possessed excellent ability, 2 students got good ability, 5 students belonged to fair ability, and 2 students obtained poor ability. As the conclusion, the seventh-semester student of English and Literature Department (2016) had fair ability (67.09) in analysing ambiguous personal references. It was proved by their mean score through the paper test (multiple choice). And the Researchers also concluded that analysed the given extracts by 3 ways. Those were by the context, good sense, and guessing. It was proved by their answers got through open-ended questionnaire.

Abstract

This research aimed at finding out the effect of using Dictogloss Technique in improving students’ skills in news writing at the third grade students of MA Modern Tarbiyah Takalar in academic 2020/2021. This research employed a quasi-experimental research design. The population of this research was the third grade students of MA Modern Tarbiyah Takalar which consisted of 39 students. The sample of the research consisted of 36 students which were taken by using total Sampling, 18 students from XII A as control class and 18 students from XII B as experimental class. The instrument in this research was test that was given in pre-test and posttest. The data indicated that there was a significant difference between students’ posttest in experimental class and controlled class. The mean score of post-test (68.27) in experimental class was greater than the mean score of post-test (51.22) in controlled class. The standard deviation of post-test (13.1) in experimental class and(9.7) in controlled class. From t-test, the researcher found that the value of t-test (4.608) was greater than t-table (2.042) at the level of significance 0.05 with degreeof freedom (df) = 34. It proves that the use of Dictogloss technique was effective in improving the students’news writing text of the third grade students of MA Modern Tarbiyah Takalar in academic 2020/2021. Dictogloss gave opportunities for learners to learn as individuals and as a group by critical thinking, Students can sharp their learning autonomy. It happens in the group while the students work together to recreate the text by helping each other with their friends. Dictogloss is also useful for vocabulary acquisition and building students’ writing habits.

Abstract

Literary reception is a literary genre that examines literary texts by considering the reader as the giver of the welcome or response. Researchers choose to analyze literary receptions in Shakespeare's plays, namely "Romeo and Juliet" and "Macbeth" as an interesting source of data to be studied and analyzed more deeply because of the difficulty of readers in responding to a literary work. This study aims to determine the reader's response to the two plays by Shakespeare. The data source of this research is the play script of "Romeo and Juliet" and "Macbeth" by William Shakespeare. The method used in this study is a qualitative descriptive method. This study uses Iser’s Reception theory with instruments in the form of documentation and observation studies because this research is reviewed by noting and marking the parts that are considered important and useful for the reader. Based on the results of this study, it is clear that there are reader responses in Shakespeare's plays. Then the results of the research are in the form of a questionnaire containing nine questions with excellent answers or responses from readers in engaging the two plays by Shakespeare.

Abstract

This article aimed at finding out the kinds of FTA strategies (positive and negative politeness) used by lecturers in lecturing listening comprehension and the effects of polite expressions used by lecturers on students. The researcher used descriptive qualitative research and applied a purposive sampling technique in collecting valid data. The subject of this research was one lecturer in the English and Literature Department of the Adab and Humanities Faculty. The researcher applied classroom observation by recording the lecturer’s activities and analyzed them through Brown and Levinson’s theory of politeness strategies (FTA). The researcher found some polite expressions of strategies that the lecturer used which are divided into two types. Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the development of students' speaking after using the vlogging as medium in learning speaking skills on descriptive text material. This study used a quantitative method with a quasi-experimental group design. The population in this study were students of class X SMA-IT Al-Fityan School Gowa 2021/2022. The total number of students is 60 people. The sample was selected purposively, 15 students from Class XA were selected as the experimental class and 15 students from XB as the control class. The experimental class is taught by Vlogging. Both classes took Pre-Test and post-test. The instrument of collecting data is an oral test that focuses on describing one of the historical place. The results showed that there was a significant difference between the experimental class learning achievements on the post-test. The mean score and standard deviation of the post-test in the experimental class were (M=11.73, SD=1.387). The results of data analysis indicate that the Vlogging technique has a contribution to improve students' speaking skills in descriptive text material. In implementing vlogging, the researcher found several benefits, the first being that students really enjoyed learning to use vlogging. second, students can used vlogging to demonstrate ideas and give students' creativity and thirdly in today's era students easily access the internet and can learn where and whenever they want. Based on the research findings, the researcher concluded that the use of Vlogging as a learning medium was significant to improve students' speaking skills, especially in descriptive text material.
