Abstract

AbstractThe objectives of this research were: 1) to find out the strengths and weaknesses of English syllabus and lesson plan for the first graders used by the teacher in SD Panggang; (2) to explain the process of redesigning English syllabus and lesson plan; (3) to present the result of the implementation of redesigning English syllabus and lesson plan for the first graders of elementary school. This research was conducted by using Research and Development (RD) method which involved eight phases to redesign syllabus and lesson plan. The instruments were used to collect the data by interviewing, observing classroom, and analyzing syllabus and lesson plan. The subject of this research were 30 students consisting of male and female students. The result of this research showed that English syllabus and lesson plan had the strengths and weaknesses. There were the strengths of syllabus including basic competence, assessments, and learning source. Whereas, the weaknesses of English syllabus, there were learning material, learning activity, indicator, and time allocation. Moreover the strengths of lesson plan covered identity column, standard competence; basic competency, and source of learning. The last was the weaknesses of lesson plan consisting of indicators, learning objectives, learning material, steps of learning, and rubric assessments. Then, the result of implementation for the first graders of elementary school was good. The students were very enthusiastic, happy and fun when they learnt English based on their needs.

Abstract

This research intended to discover two things, namely the students‟ interest inlearning English by using movies watching media, and the result of the students‟speaking skill improvement on cyclical implementations. This research appliedClassroom Action Research proposed by Kemmis and McTaggart (2000) with twocycles. Each cycle consisted of a pre-test, treatments, and post-tests. It involved 31students of XI IPA 3 class in SMAN 1 Seyegan as the research subjects. The result ofthis research showed that English movies could make the students interested infollowing the English class. It was proven by the students who became more active totalk in English and did not feel shy or reluctant to share their thoughts. Another resultshowed that the students‟ average score was gradually improved from 58.08 in the pretestbecame 65.74 and 74.78 in the first and second post-tests. It can be concluded thatEnglish movies is effective to be implemented as an alternative teaching and learningmedia to teach English speaking skill. Therefore, English teachers are recommended touse English movies to optimize the English learning outcome not only on speaking skillbut also other skills.Keywords: Classroom Action Research, English Movies, Improve, Speaking Skill

Abstract

This study deals with a novel entitled Little Lord Fauntleroy written by Frances Hodgson Burnett. The objectives of the study are: (1)to describe Cedric’s personality in the novel and (2)to reveal the moral values from Cedric’s personality in the novel. The study employed library study and descriptive qualitative analysis method. The data of the study are from the novel and other supporting documents. Based on the analysis, the writer found two things: firstly, Cedric is characterized as a boy who has good personalities such as honest, kind-hearted, friendly, humble, wise, sympathetic and responsible. Secondly, the moral values that can be taken from the novel are honesty, kindness, hospitality, modesty, wisdom, empathy and responsible.

Abstract

The writer conducts the research related to class conflict which is presented in Khaled Hosseini’s “The Kite Runner” novel. This qualitative research is written to analyze the conflicts that happen in Afghan society which is mainly caused by difference of social class. The research is conducted by using library research. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method as the data are described in the form of sentences. The steps of collecting the data in this research are reading both the novel and the supporting theories related, analyzing, organizing and displaying the data to allow conclusions to be drawn. The results show that the society in the twentieth is fundamentally separated by two large groups namely Pashtun and Hazara. They are inhabit Afghanistan as told in The Kite Runner. The Pashtuns act as the dominant upper class and the Hazaras fill the society of the lower class which fits the theory of Marxism.

Abstract

English communication, which has become an essential skill for graduates of the university, has not been achieved because of the low performance in spoken English proficiency. Offering necessary circumstances to support English learning during the outbreak of covid-19 is a challenge for educators in this digital age. This study addressed the emerging issue of the availability of media in online learning. It specifically aimed at designing interactive digital media that would not only assist the students in gaining the language skills but also develop their self-learning through its flexibility and accessibility. Design-based research was employed in the present study that involved the first-grade students of higher education. The ASSURE Model was used as a guideline for the appropriateness of the media, and a need analysis was conducted to find out the target and learning needs of the students through interview and questionnaires. The result showed that the design of interactive digital media gave positive impacts on the higher education students’ English communication skills and their independence in learning as well. The students’ performance was improved through pre-test and post-test results. The designed media itself was considered very good (a score of 87) by the seven aspects namely organization, speaking activities, appearance, learner-centered, content, feedback availability, and motivation impact.

Abstract

Pengabdian kepada masyarakat yang diwujudkan dalam sebuah program bernama SPARK (English Program for Kids). SPARK di masa pandemi ini merupakan program pelaksanaan kedua setelah sebelumnya pernah dilaksanakan secara luring pada Januari 2020. Namun, karena pandemi melanda Indonesia dan hampir di seluruh dunia, maka Program SPARK tahun kedua dialihkan menjadi suatu program yang berfokus pada pembuatan materi tambahan atau supplementary materials bagi anak-anak Sekolah Dasar. Program SPARK ini merupakan hasil kesepakatan bersama antara pengusul dan Kelompok Mitra sebagai bentuk dari pengabdian kepada masyarakat. SPARK ini merupakan suatu usaha untuk membantu mitra meningkatkan kompetensi berbahasa Inggris untuk anak- anak usia Sekolah Dasar. Mitra pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini adalah Sekolah Dasar Negri di wilayah Godean, Yogyakarta. Materi pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris dikembangkan melalui sebuah platform bernama StoryJumper yang menghadirkan online audio book untuk menunjang pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris yang menarik bagi anak-anak Sekolah Dasar. Selain itu, fitur audio yang terdapat dalam materi tambahan ini dapat membantu para siswa dalam melatih pelafalan kosa kata Bahasa Inggris. Pemanfaatan platform storyjumper juga mampu mengakomodasi variasi gaya belajar para siswa melalui audio bagi siswa auditory, visual yang menarik bagi siswa visual, dan bahkan siswa yang termasuk dalam pembelajar reading/writing dan kinesthetic. Lebih lanjut, penggunaan platform StoryJumper ini menginspirasi guru Bahasa Inggris mitra untuk dapat menggunakan platform yang sama untuk kemudian dapat dikembangkan kembali pada topik-topik pembelajaran lainnya.

Abstract

Holistic education is an approach that appreciates all the aspects of human potencies. As the first teachers of the children, parents are the ideal models who should grow the children holistically. This study aims to discuss the portrayal of holistic education in Little Women, a movie by Greta Gerwig. The main focus of this study is 1) underlining how holistic education became the standard in raising the four daughters in the novel, and 2) the impact of holistic parenting towards their adulthood. To solve the problem, a library study and in-depth analysis are taken and a descriptive-qualitative method is used. The study reveals that 1) within the childhood to adolescence, the parents raise their daughters by fulfilling all aspects of children development – not only their physical but also the four quotients in holistic education: intellectual (IQ), mental or spiritual (SQ), emotional (EQ), and adversity (AQ) and also social ability; thus, 2) the implementation of holistic education gives a very positive impact towards the daughter; makes the daughters capable of facing the demands and challenges of their life especially when they cope problems appears in their career, society and marriage life.

Abstract

Malioboro of Yogyakarta with its traditional market, Beringharjo, becomes an attraction to both domestic and foreign tourists that inevitably it supports the tourism industry and the small business enterprises in that area. An excellent service is a must including the ability to build communication in English with the tourists. The study focuses on developing an English mini book to help the traders in communication with foreigners during the business transactions. It applied a designed-based research and involved 25 traditional market traders as participants. The data was gained through observation, questionnaire, and interview. The findings showed the designed English mini book was acceptable based on evaluation given by the traders with five aspects of evaluation: linguistics features, language authenticity, English activities in business field, vocabulary enrichment, and the book appearance

Abstract

 Professionalism is pivotal for teachers because it influences student accomplishment and qualifies educational goals. The demeanor of professional teachers encourages students to develop what is inside them and present it to the world. Based on Socket's professional teacher theory, the study analyzes Lagravenese’s Freedom Writers movie to describe teacher professionalism through Erin Gruwell's character. To answer this problem, literature study, in-depth analysis and descriptive-qualitative methods are used. The study revealed that professional teachers' performance by Erin Gruwell contains five aspects: character, commitment to change and continuous improvement, subject knowledge, pedagogical knowledge, obligations and working relationships outside the classroom. The impact is also seen by the changes in students’ behavior from being difficult to manage to being obedient students with good achievements. Thus, teacher professionalism produces prestige for students making them able to become learners with good behavior, motivation, and academic performance.Keywords: teacher professionalism; teacher competences; student behavior; teacher education.

Abstract

Listening is crucial to master as it reveals the ability to comprehend and produce effective communication. In fact, listening becomes an unfavorable skill and is considered less important that it does not appear in most school textbooks. This study aimed at the development of an English audio e-workbook as a languagelearning media to improve students’ listening skill in the classroom. This study is a mixed method study thatinvolved 25 students of 7th grade at junior high school in Ngawi, East Java, Indonesia. The result showed that the designed audio e- workbook showed a significant improvement on the student’s listening skill andconsidered properly to use and support students' listening skill based on the feedback availability and experts. The data was collected through interviews, questionnaires, and tests to determine the targets and needs of students. Most of the students achieved upgrading scores from the pre-test to their post-test. The pre-test resulted that students who passed the minimum grade, score averages is below 50.00, were below 50% while the post-test showed an upgrade of almost 75% of students having an increase in grades.
