Abstract

The purpose of this research is to increase students' participation and enthusiasm in English speaking through story telling. The research examined the following components of speaking ability: pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. Classroom action research was employed as the research approach. The subjects of this study were third semester students in the literary faculty for the academic year 2019/2020, a total of 30 participants. The data were gathered using a series of tests, an observation checklist, a questionnaire, and a video recording. It was assessed utilizing a descriptive test, an observation checklist, a questionnaire, and a video recording, as well as the mean score formula. The findings suggested that story telling elevated the participation and engagement of students speaking English in two cycles. The results of the analysis of the category of speaking skills or student participation indicated an improved performance in the average percentage of students who obtained a score of 55 very low with a percentage of 63.33 % and 0% in the very high category, the first cycle with a percentage of 13.33 % in the high category with a score of 80-89, and the second cycle with a percentage of 46.6 % who obtained a high score of 14. While the questionnaire data revealed the students' interests. These findings demonstrate that when a story telling model is used, participation and enthusiasm in speaking increased.

Abstract

This study examines the English  and Makassar language request phrases. The imperative phrase of both languages from its form, purpose, and category in a sentence was studied in this analysis. The research used descriptive approach and contrastive analysis in terms of methods, the entire data were gathered by observing  and interviewing the native speakers of Lakiung dialects who still speak in their everyday communication. In the analysis, the writer outlined and compared the differences and similarities in request sentences, classified and explained  request sentences into subject, predicate, object and adverb. The results revealed that the request sentences in English and Macassarese have some similarities and differences were  found in form of sentences and the function of adverb. The differences between English and Macassarese  request sentence pattern, particularly on the element of predicate (P) in a sentence. While the similarity was S – P – O – K  and  S – P  construction.

Abstract

One of the primary goals of studying English is to improve one's capacity to communicate in English. Islamic-based English classes for children at a local Mosque are ideal since they are provided with Islamic-based English materials derived from Islamic principles and tailored to the needs of Muslim youngsters while learning a second language. The present study aims to investigate an Islamic-based language learning instruction suitable for children in a non-formal setting. The study employs a qualitative research approach which observes and surveys Indonesian language and religious teachers to develop a suitable model for children in an informal setting. The results of the study revealed a means to enhance knowledge about Islam, while learning English as a tool of communication. The following conclusions can be taken from the stated results and discussions; (1) the planning and implementation of Islamic-based English language instruction in non-formal setting have not been optimally implemented thus far therefore the study provided an Islamic-based language instruction suitable for children, (2) educators require innovation in planning and implementing authentic learning for children since they are characterized by their playful nature and learn best by considering such nature, and (3) the foundations of Islam are best taught in early childhood, hence should be prioritized as the content material of their learning.

Abstract

Pemanfaatan Audio Visual Aids (AVA) dalam Pembelajaran Kosakata bahasa Inggris melibatkan siswa TPA Jannatul Firdaus tepat untuk diimplementasikan bagi siswa khususnya di tingkat dasar. Pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris, khususnya ejaan, pelafalan dan penulisan membuat proses belajar lebih menarik dan efektif dengan memanfaatkan media AVA serta dapat membantu pemahaman siswa dalam pembelajaran. Pembelajaran kosakata Bahasa Inggris dengan memanfaaatkan AVA sesuai dengan kebutuhan anak dengan memperlihatkan gambar dan memperdengarkan pelafalan kosakata Bahasa Inggris secara langsung sehingga dapat mencapai target yaitu siswa berpartisipasi aktif, mampu melafalkan dan memahami kosakata Bahasa Inggris. IbM pengabdian yang dilakukan merupakan kegiatan yang bersinergi secara positif dengan masyarakat khususnya siswa TPA Jannatul Firdaus. Hasil kegiatan pengabdian menunjukkan hasil yang positif yang dapat dilihat dari antusias dan partisipasi siswa dalam setiap kegiatan.

Abstract

Pembelajaran bahasa Inggris dengan menggunakan metode fun learning sangat efektif diimplementasikan bagi sekolah dasar, khususnya dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris karena siswa sekolah dasar sangat sulit melafalkan, menghafalkan kosa kata dan ungkapan bahasa Inggris yang sederhana. Lebih lanjut, diharapkan melalui metode fun learning para guru SD Pemulung dapat menerapkan pengajaran bahasa Inggris yang menyenangkan sesuai dengan kebutuhan anak. Selama pengajaran bahasa Inggris berlangsung, siswa diberi stimulasi dengan menggunakan metode fun learning sesuai dengan target yang ingin dicapai dari pengajaran ini membangun minat partisipasi aktif, keterlibatan, dan simpati siswa sekolah dasar dalam mempelajari bahasa Inggris dengan cara yang menyenangkan. pengabdian yang dilakukan benar-benar merupakan kegiatan yang berdampak positif dengan masyarakat khususnya warga pemulung yang berada di sekitar SD tersebut. Hasil kegiatan pengabdian menunjukkan perilaku kemampuan dan minat siswa meningkat dalam mempelajari bahasa Inggris sederhana dalam percakapan sehari-hari. Hal ini dapat dilihat melalui perubahan yang sangat signifikan yang ditemukan pada siswa yaitu siswa lebih antusias dan percaya diri dalam mengucapkan kata-kata sederhana dalam bahasa Inggris.

Abstract

Desa Pakkatto adalah satu desa yang terletak di kecamatan Bontomarannu, yang terletak di bagian selatan Kabupaten Gowa dengan jarak + 11 km dari ibu kota Kabupaten Gowa, 23 km dari ibu kota propinsi (Makassar) dan 2 km dari ibu kota kecamatan, luas wilayah + 1.134 ha. Salah satu hasil pertanian yang sedang berkembang di desa Pakatto adalah buah rambutan dan berdasarkan hasil observasi menunjukkan bahwa sebagian besar kelompok ibu rumah tangga di lingkungan tersebut berprofesi seperti buruh, berkebun, hingga penjual buah rambutan, penghasilan para ibu rumah tangga hanya sebagai penjual buah rambutan namun wawasan pengetahuan dan keterampilan masih perlu diberikan pengayaan. Tujuan kegiatan pengabdian ini adalah 1) memberikan penyuluhan tentang manfaat terkandung pada rambutan dan jamur tiram dari efek kesehatan, 2) training pembuatan boterkoektan (Lekker Holland Rambutan) dan jampy (jamur crispy) sehingga diharapkan menjadi kreativitas ibu rumah tangga untuk menambah income keluarga, pada khalayak sasaran yang berjumlah 21 orang. Metode yang digunakan kepada mitra adalah ceramah dan demonstrasi. Pemberian materi disajikan face-to-face dan memberikan langsung praktik yang mana melibatkan mitra dalam kegiatan ini. Metode ini juga diharapkan dapat menggali potensi masyarakat atau sumber daya alam lingkungannya yang tidak termanfaatkan. Hasil yang diperoleh setelah pelatihan ini adalah mitra telah memahami dan mengetahui teknik pembuatan dan pengolahan kue boterkoektan dan jampy. Selain itu, mitra diberikan pelatihan, diskusi dan pendampingan manajemen usaha, diskusi pendampingan kemasan dan labeling yang menarik.

Abstract

Kegiatan Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat Desa (PKMD) Browtan dan Pietan untuk kelompok ibu rumah tangga ini dilaksanakan di Kecamatan Bontomarannu Desa Pakatto Dusun Pakatto Lompo tersebut berjarak 21 km dari kampus Universitas Muslim Indonesia. Tujuan kegiatan pengabdian ini adalah: 1) memberikan pelatihan pembuatan Browtan dan Pietan; 2) Pemberian materi manajemen usaha dan pemasaran; dan 3) penerapan pembuatan desain kemasan dan label yang mana seluruh kegiatan tersebut merupakan pengayaan yang nantinya diharapkan menjadi kreatifitas ibu rumah tangga untuk menambah income ekonomi keluarga. Khalayak sasaran dari mitra sebanyak 25 orang. Metode yang digunakan untuk IPTEKS kepada mitra adalah metode pedagogik dan pemberian materi disajikan dan diberikan dalam bentuk ceramah dengan memberikan praktik langsung yang mana melibatkan mitra dalam kegiatan tersebut. Metode ini juga diharapkan dapat menggali potensi masyarakat maupun sumber daya alam lingkungannya yang belum termanfaatkan dengan baik. Hasil observasi kami menunjukkan bahwa sebagian besar masyarakat di lingkungan tersebut masih berada di tingkat ekonomi lemah merujuk kepada profesi yang mereka tekuni seperti buruh, berkebun, hingga penjual buah rambutan, penghasilan para ibu rumah tangga hanya sebagai penjual buah rambutan namun wawasan pengetahuan dan keterampilan masih minim.

Abstract

The aims of this research is to know the level of anxiety faced by students at ABA-UMI, to know the factors cause anxiety, and to know the students’ strategies in reducing anxiety in learning English. This research used descriptive qualitative method. The writers focused on observing the level of anxiety faced by ABA students. The writers took two classes as the repondents in 2013-2014 academic years. The writers did classroom observation and interviewed nine (9) students who tended to feel anxious in learning English. The observation was conducted three meetings in speaking class and the writers used video recording to record and collect the data needed.The writers found three levels of anxiety faced by ABA students; they were mild anxiety, moderate anxiety and severe anxiety level. The first level can be seen in physical response from the students such as nervous, afraid, sweating, and embarrassed. But, the students could control their anxiety by motivating themselves to learn. The second level of anxiety was moderate level. The student did not participate in class (silent), cold hands and sweating. In this level, the students could control his/her anxiety so that he/she could participate in learning.And the last level of anxiety found was severe anxiety. The writers found that there were two students who felt anxious. The students had different symptoms such as cold hands, sweating, and their head feel heavy. This anxiety appeared when students could not overcome his/her worry. In this level, the students could not control their anxiety so that they could not participate even avoid the learning activity.

Abstract

Pedagogic competence is one of the four competencies that needs to be developed on an ongoing basis by a teacher, especially in educational developments that demand strengthening the profile of Pancasila learners who are able to think critically and have character. To deal with this, the demands of 21st century teacher competence can be handled through Lesson Study (LS). LS is teacher development assistance which is considered quite effective as a forum for collaboration between fellow study teachers to develop learning tools with the stages of plan, do and see. The purpose of this research is to find out how Lesson Study implementation of the pedagogic competence of English teachers at SMPN 23 Makassar. This study used descriptive qualitative method. The research was carried out at UPT SPF SMPN 23 Makassar in semester I (one) of the 2022/2023 academic year. Before the research was carried out, researchers and teachers discussed in advance about the process of implementing learning with the Lesson Study platform, the timeline of activities and agreed subject matter topics. The research subject was English teachers at SMPN 23 Makassar who acted as model teacher. The research instrument used was in the form of teacher observation sheets, namely: English teacher pedagogical competency observation sheets and observation sheets for the implementation of Lesson Study. The teacher's pedagogical competence increased from good to very good criteria after going through the Lesson Study stages, especially in the aspects of mastering student characteristics, mastery of learning theories and principles, and communication/interaction in class. In order for the teacher's pedagogical competence to remain of high quality and controlled, the Lesson Study for Learning Community needs to be organized by the school leadership as a forum for continuing teacher competency development.

Abstract

This quantitative research study analyzed the implementation of the TPS method on students' speaking skills. Twenty-seven students in the English education program at Universitas Muslim Indonesia participated in the study, which applied a speaking test and observation sheet to collect data on participants speaking skills. The study analyzed the implementation of TPS on students' speaking skills in terms of accuracy and fluency dealing with vocabulary and Grammar, as well as smoothness and self-confidence. The findings revealed that the use of the TPS method was able to improve students' speaking abilities. The result of the students' mean score in speaking accuracy in terms of vocabulary in cycle I was 6.85, and in cycle II, it was 7.97, which was improved by 1.12. Grammar in cycle I was 6.59; in cycle II, it was 7.73; it was improved to 1.14. Speaking fluency in terms of smoothness in cycle I was 7.10; cycle II was 8.22, it was improved to 1.12. Self-confidence in cycle I was 6.62, and cycle II was 8.54. It was improved to 1.92. The study concluded that the TPS method improved students' speaking skills of students. These findings contributed to understanding the potential benefits of the TPS method for improving students' speaking skills.
