Abstract

Background: Puberty is important and exciting lifetime changes in an individual. Many new changes are experienced during puberty, such as physically, mentally, and emotionally. Currently, young males worldwide have different onset of pubertal age. Many factors may result in this change of pubertal age. The exact pubertal age was still unknown due to less study conducted previously. Therefore, the aim of this study was to identify the distribution of pubertal age among male school students in Jatinangor. Methods: A descriptive study was conducted from April to June 2013. A secondary data were obtained from the Jatinangor Cohort Study, from the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Padjadjaran. The samples were taken via cluster random sampling from 48 schools around Jatinangor. Randomization was conducted and a total of 219 male students were finally obtained from the overall data which had at least single onset of pubertal changes. This presents a response rate of 82.33%.Results: The earliest onset of pubertal age was identified as 9 years old and the oldest onset was 18 years old. The majority onset of pubertal age ranged from 12 to 15 years old with average mean of 13 years. Voice changes were identified as the early sign of puberty among males. Conclusions: Majority of the students undergo puberty at age 13 which is earlier compared to previous studies. Thus, this study indicates decreasing in onset of pubertal age among male school students in Jatinangor. [AMJ.2016;3(1):6–11] DOI: 10.15850/amj.v3n1.698

Abstract

Background: Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) is one of the microvascular complications of diabetes mellitus (DM) that is prevalent to the blindness risk. The World Health Organization (WHO) considers Proliferative DR one of the priorities of eye diseases. This disease is caused by angiogenesis brought about by Vascular Endothelial Growth Factors (VEGF). The Anti-VEGF Bevacizumab (Avastin) injection is considered sufficient in preventing proliferative DR patients from blindness. This study aimed to identify the characteristics of patients with proliferative DR underwent Anti-VEGF injection at Cicendo Eye Hospital, Bandung. Methods: This was a retrospective study conducted from August−October 2014 using 40 medical records of patients with proliferative DR underwent Anti-VEGF Bevacizumab (Avastin) injection at the Cicendo Eye Hospital Bandung from January−December 2013. Inclusion criteria were the patients underwent anti-VEGF injection with complete medical records with minimum follow up of 3 weeks. Results: Among 40 patients, 55% were male and 45% were female. Furthermore, there was 100% found for DM Type 2. Moreover, random blood glucose varied among 140–200mg/dl (50%), while the hypertension was mostly at stage 2. Some of these patients had proliferative DR with vitreal hemorrhage (25%), macular edema (40%), and/or tractionalablasio retina (22.5%). Most patients had an improvement in their visual acuity (60%).Conclusions: Most of patients are male, aged 50–59 years old, random blood glucose among 140– 200mg/dl, followed DM Type 2 and hypertension stage 2. Anti-VEGF injection improves visual acuity. [AMJ.2016;3(2):280–5]DOI: 10.15850/amj.v3n2.781

Abstract

Under specific circumstances such as during aerobic predominant exercise, the production of free radicals increases and creates free radicals-endogen antioxidants imbalance. It causes oxidative stress. The level of oxidative stress can be recognized by measuring the level of plasma malondialdehyde (MDA). But the effect of physical activity and the effect of exogenous antioxidants supplementation is still not clearly known in the literature. Based on the background above, as a preliminary study, the writers conduct a study to investigate the plasma MDA level on mice which is given and not given a combination of Brastagi’s oranges and carrots juice before physical activity using mice’s treadmill for 10,20, and 30 minutes. The research method used in this study is an experimental laboratory study. As objects of this study are 24 mice(mus musculus), white-colored, male, weighting 25-30 grams, which is randomly chosen. The objects are divided into 2 groups, Group A: 12 mice (given a combination of Brastagi’s oranges and carrots juice before physical activity using mice’s treadmill) and group B: 12 mice (not given a combination of Brastagi’s orangesand carrots juice before physical activity using mice’s treadmill). Group A is divided into 3 subgroups: A1 (doing treadmill for 10 minutes), A2 (doing treadmill for 20 minutes), and A3 (doing treadmill for 30 minutes). The same procedure is employed for group B. Plasma MDA level measured after doing a physical activity using mice treadmill. The homogeneity of the result then was tested using Levene’s test and the normality of the result was tested using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test (p>0.05). Further, the data were analyzed using an independent t-test (p≤0.05), one-way ANOVA (p≤0.05) then Duncan’s test were used. The analyzed data indicated a combination of Brastagi’s oranges and carrots juice supplementation given to mice before physical activity, for 10,20, and 30 minutes caused lower plasma MDA levels than mice not given a combination of Brastagi’s oranges and carrots juice before physical activity. The differences are 38,44% (0,5277 vs 0,8571) (A1-B1); 37,96% (0,5866 vs 0,9455) (A2-B2); dan77,79% (0,8438 vs 1,6161) (A3-B3).The conclusion of the study suggested that a combination of Brastagi’s oranges and carrots juice supplementation given to mice before physical activity for 10,20, and 30 minutes caused lower plasma MDA levels than mice not given a combination of Brastagi’s oranges and carrots juice before physical activity.

Abstract

Workers of PT. Grandtex is divided into three different divisions; nonproduction division, weaving division, and spinning division. These workers have different activities, job processes, and work environments, especially in the cotton dust exposure rate. Exposure to cotton dust can influence physical working capacity. This study aimed to find out physical working capacity differences between workers of nonproduction division, weaving division, and spinning division. A comparative analytic survey study is conducted on 112 subjects, which consists of 32 nonproduction division workers, 40 weaving division workers, and 40 spinning division workers. Subjects are picked by the stratified random sampling method. Physical working capacity measured by using an anaerobic capacity parameter (V̇O2 max)with the Astrand-Rhyming chair test. The homogeneity of the result is tested by the Levene test and the normality is tested by Kolmogorov-Smirnov. To find out the differences, those data are analyzed by one-way ANOVA test (p<0,05) and followed by Duncan test to measure how big the differences are. The result of data analyzed with ANOVA indicated that there is a significant difference in physical working capacity (V̇O2 max)(p=0,000) among workers of nonproduction, weaving, and spinning division. This result was also followed by Duncan’s test suggesting thatthe physical working capacity (V̇O2 max) of nonproduction workers are bigger than weaving production workers and also bigger than spinning workers (35,78 ± 7,27 vs 31,50 ± 7,59 vs 28,03 ± 5,92 ml/kg BW/minute). From this study, we can conclude that the physical working capacity (V̇O2 max) of nonproduction workers is better than weaving and spinning division workers.

Abstract

In globalization era today we as world member can feel the spread of science andtechnology advance in which one country with another country will know each otherstrength and weakness through evaluation of its various technology and communicationwhich influence people in various countries. From year to year there are many people whoare increasingly go to jail. Whereas the failure and success of citizen education can be seenfrom daily attitude and behavior of community and their family environment. So, it is notsurprising that there are more and more prisoners from year to year. This indicate thatmany citizens who are involved in infringement which result in criminality. The solutionis that citizen education material should be prepared to suit with situation from influenceof science and technology advance, in addition the government should control communityand their family environment to be better (good citizenship). The material and the wayteacher teach (method, media and model) should be arranged. As suggested by William T.Callahan (1990: 338) that good citizenship was not born, but is in interpersonal, intellectualabilities which are needed and should be learned seriously, then applied to community andtheir family environment as citizen of people in various countries. DOI: 10.15408/sjsbs.v3i3.7865
