Abstract

The integration of technology in a language classroom practice is effective, as shown by various researches around the globe. The ability in using technology in the language classroom also signifies the high quality a teacher has. This in turn will have a meaningful impact in the effectiveness of the teaching and learning process. However, in what ways the technology is used and how it is normally applied in the teaching and learning process is yet unknown. The obstacles in using the technology properly and also what kind of technology is used also become issues. This study is aimed at identifying to which extent the four English language teachers in Politeknik Negeri Malang, particularly in the Department of Information Technology, implement the technology, i.e. the use of the internet, computer, and other supporting devices in their ESP classrooms. Furthermore, the study also analyses the factors that demand the use of technology in ESP classrooms and how they can be used as a means of self-reflection for the teachers to evaluate their teaching and learning approaches to improve the students' English mastery.

Abstract

Abstract: The rapid growth of international students from tertiary level has reached nearly 3 million since 2007. This condition comes from short-term and long-term mobility. Students coming from developed countries, such as Australia, North America and Western Europe, tend to choose short-term program. Meanwhile, pupils coming from Asian-Pacific countries prefer a lengthy extensive study in pursuing their education. The needs and demands of international students coming to this nation must be in line with the development of the universities or institutions inside. Since 2018, State Polytechnic of Malang has opened international classes for foreigners. This institution provides 9 classes for 9 study programs from 7 various departments each year. Particularly in the Information Technology (IT) department, the foreign students are around 8 to 12% of the whole class population. Unfortunately, they do not receive a matriculation program and an Indonesian language course before getting the lectures. This can lead them to have a misinterpretation or misunderstanding while having communication with their Indonesian friends. At the present, administration staff and Information Technology lecturers also do not get a short education or additional media in communicating using English language. The emergence of the issue causes inadequate services to the foreign students. If this problem continues, there will be dissatisfaction with the college services and a decrease in quality assurance. Due to this condition, the researchers aim to develop a bilingual pocketbook for the IT lecturers and administration staff. Specifically, to make the pocketbook more informative, the researchers also include the usage of Quick Response (QR) code and infographics.

Abstract

Discourse markers (DMs) play a crucial role in writing as ‘linking words’, ‘linking phrases’, or ‘sentence connectors’ that bind ideas between sentences in a paragraph  or between paragraphs to  build  coherence  in a text.  DMs should be sufficiently but not overly used in writing. As EFL learners find it difficult to identify the types, functions, and positions of DMs to link ideas in their academic writing, this article attempts to share an instrument in the form of DMs checklist to help learners enhance their knowledge of DMs. The checklist can also be used as teacher/peer feedback form in the writing process.

Abstract

The increasingly heavier life demands, especially in the economic sector, have encouraged housewives in Desa Pakisaji, Kabupaten Malang to set up Ron Tuwuh batik tulis business group and  Prohandji Embroidery business group. The batik works are quite good and have begun to be well-known, especially among government agencies in Kabupaten Malang, as well as their embroidery works. There have been several steps taken to develop themselves in terms of design, namely by establishing a partnership with the 2019 Partnership PKM team of Information Technology Department of State Polytechnic of Malang. They have learned to design using applications built and as a result their designs become more up-to-date and the workmanship becomes more efficient. In an effort to sustain this program, this year the same team also continued PKM Partnership by solving other problems faced. From the results of interviews and observations conducted, it was found that each group had problems in the field of financial recording. The income of the batik cloth and the embroidered cloth are still recorded manually so that the financial recording process of both income and expenditure is ineffective and inefficient. From these problems, an Accounting Information System, SAKTIPOL was created which aims to assist both groups in the field of financial management. In addition, after the system was designed, this team then provided training and assistance in the use of this computer and internet-based application.

Abstract

The proper teaching materials determine successful teaching-learning. Teaching materials are required to adapt to the current situation of the institution, curriculum, and learners. The new curriculum adopted by the Electrical Engineering Study Program required the updated version since English courses had been replaced by the first and last semester of both the D3 and D4 programs. Developing the new teaching materials for the study program aimed to provide relevant issues and teaching strategies that could boost students' motivation in the classroom. Thus, the developed teaching materials were to propose the teaching and learning that fit the learner's needs. The research objective was to develop new teaching modules for the Electrical Engineering Study Program that were much more interactive, effective, and efficient for the learners to study English within the Electrical Engineering context. This research applied Research and Development (R&D) model adopted from Borg and Gall comprising six stages, namely: (1) needs analysis, (2) designing the product, (3) proposing the product, (4) evaluating the product, (5) testing and (6) disseminating the product. As a result, the new teaching module was redesigned to provide English teaching and learning effectively and efficiently that could be easily understood and helpful for the student to achieve the learning outcomes as expected.
