Abstract

Abstract. Concerning to city branding, the role of brand image is very important for visitors to remember the tourism destination. The destination brand image can identify by 5 elements of city image, namely path, edge, node, district, and landmark. Semarang Chinatown is one of the historical tourism sites in Semarang that can represent the Semarang's city branding as a "variety of culture" with various cultures and interactions. The aim of this research is to identify the Semarang's City Branding (variety of culture) through destination brand image that revealed by 5 elements of city image. Research methods are carried out in two stages. The first step analysis was described the image of Chinatown area using the descriptive qualitative method. The second step was tried to find the correlation between image of the Chinatown area and the Semarang city branding. Descriptive comparative technique used to compare between the existing and the trend of Chinatown development with theory image of the city. The result of this reserach is identification destination brand image based on 5 elements of the city image. The first element is path with character toponym of alley based on its history as well as the special function as trading area, namely the Gang Baru as traditional market path and Gang Warung as semicircular market path. The second element is edge that shown by the form of Kali Semarang and Gang Beteng which has a history of Chinatown development as centre trade zone in Semarang at the past until now. The third element is node that can be seen from every pagoda located at Chinatown junction (skewers location) because of the fengshui that is embraced by Chinatown communities and it is believed that the location of pagoda can protect against evil and crime. The fourth and fifth elements are districts and landmarks that represented by the Semawis Market and pagoda as the Confucian temple. As a conclusion, Semarang Chinatown's destination brand image as a historical and cultural tourism area of China is memorable and has a strong character.

Abstract

Abstract. Studentification is a neighbourhood changes caused by the students’ presence in the permanent settlement then influence the area; students accomodation supply and community’s social economic aspects. This research revealed the influence of studentification in Tembalang higher education area to the physical and social economic aspects. Qualitative research method was used to explain more about the studentification influence and the Tembalang development trend. Interview conducted to some key figures in the community such as Lurah, community leaders, and students to find out their perception regarding the neighbourhood transformation. Based on analysis, it showed that studentification emerged since the Pleburan campus moved to Tembalang campus which students accomodation demand increased significantly. Moreover, the studentification influences seen from the increasing of land price, land use conversion, and students’ life style that affected the community’s job-shifting. However, the development of Tembalang higher education area still on the track based on the guidance and spatial pattern structure recommendation of Semarang Spatial Plan 2011-2030.

Abstract

The China Town Area is one of the historic areas that influenced the formation process of the Semarang City since the 17th century. However, in its development, there are several issues which are challenging in preserving the China Town as a cultural heritage area. Public awareness is one of the issues that arise in the heritage preservation effort.. Public awareness is formed based on knowledge that affects the community’s role of in the preservation. This research reveals the level of community awareness of the China Town Semarang towards the preservation of the Cultural Heritage Area. Qualitative research method was used to explain existing situation of community awareness. Interview was conducted with several key persons, for instance the Lurah, the owner of the Cultural Heritage Building, handicraft owners, and local community to find out the characteristics and their role in the preservation. Based on the analysis, it is found several issues exist suc as population number that decreases, high level of community migration, and buildings facade change. These issues affect the social conditions of the community, especially the understanding and awareness of the local community regarding the conservation of the China Town area as a Cultural Heritage Area. The factor of trust and upholding the customary principles is the background of the China Town community still maintaining its ancestral heritage.

Abstract

Increasing demand for housing in Semarang city simultaneously rose housing development activities. The imbalance between need and provision has caused housing backlog. Programs were conducted enabling houses be built independently by people, by government supported through national housing and by private developers. While 24.279 people do not have their own home in Semarang (Kuswartojo, 2005), 24.980 houses in Semarang were being emptied by their owners (8,5% of the total units). This indicated target inaccuracies in home ownership programs goals. Therefore it is necessary to assess the effectiveness of housing development programs by clarifying the ability to fulfill the demand, and the impact through occupancy rates. The purpose of the study is to analyze the effectiveness of housing development in Mijen district, the largest suburb regency of the Semarang city ( 16,6% of the total area). In 2000 the government developed the area into the largest housing allocation site following the downtown area. The study employed housing needs analysis dan occupancy rate analysis, both using descriptive method is reinforced with primary and secondary data.

Abstract

Abstract. Urban development is a very dynamic process which determines by the function and the value of an area. Development of the city and the modernization causes social, economic and environmental changes and causes spatial transformation in the urban kampoong. The spatial transformation cannot be generalized and have different forms. Kampung Melayu is one of the kampung kota in the Semarang city that still survives till now. The function of Kampung Melayu is very vital and has enormous value in the colonial era so that it becomes a special attraction in the service trade sector. However, in the 20th century Kampung Melayu changed its function which led to changes in spatial planning in the region. Based on the results of the analysis, there are indications of decreased activity in the region regarding economic, environmental and social aspects both in the context of physical and non-physical changes. Thus, the purpose of this research is to make a spatial transformation that occurs in Kampung Melayu Semarang. The method used is a qualitative method. This study discusses the historical role of Malay villages from the future, how to assess the character of space and activities in Kampung Melayu and the spatial transformation in Kampung Melayu. Abstract

The Sangiran is a national tourism strategic area as well as the most important ancient site established by UNESCO. Hence, its existence can contribute to the community livelihood which is dominated as poor. Meanwhile, having World Heritage Sites (WHS) status gives many restrictions to the local community such as restriction to soil excavation. Focusing on the agricultural sector as their main job was relatively difficult because of the physical aspect. The community chose the possible way to gain income that the job did not relate with tourism activity. Therefore, this study examines the meaning of sustainable rural tourism for community livelihood using the sustainable livelihood approach. Two rounds of Focus Group Discussions and interviews with some experts were conducted to find out issues in the development of Sangiran tourism and stakeholder perceptions. The community considered that they could not rely on the tourism sector so that they adjusted to the situation by doing another job. Indeed, the WHS status of Sangiran had not given impacts on the community; they prefer to conduct their previous activities. The development of rural tourism was not sustained; the community was still vulnerable that pointed out by their low economic capacity

Abstract

Jakarta has a rapid development which attracts newcomers to come and live in. Hereinafter, the newcomers look for the house which in accordance to their income and preferences. They chose inner city kampong for residing and their existence displacing the Betawi people as the local community. The newcomers’ presence led displacement and transformed the neighbourhood. Likewise, they had also influenced in the socio-economic transformation related with education, women worker, community relationship, and lifestyle.
