Abstract

The research was conducted in March – August 2014 in Bulu Mario, Aek Nabara and Huraba Villages. Research method used line transect and purposive sampling. This research aims to identification and mapping of the tree and nest of Sumatran Orangutan (Pongo abelii) in Dolok Sibual-buali Nature Reserve buffer zone (Bulu Mario, Aek Nabara and Huraba villages). The results showed that the most trees were used as the nest of Sumatran Orangutan (Pongo abelii) were  Syzygium sp. (Hau Dolok) and Quercus gemelliflora Blume (Hoteng) trees. The trees have the meeting branch, a series of many leaves and twigs, the trees weren’t Sumatran Orangutan’s feed with hight 11-15 m, diameter 20-30 m, branch pattern was adjacent, type of canopy was irregular shape and spherical, and nest high 11-15 m. The position of the nest is most commonly found nesting in position I (near by the main branch) and nest type is C (the nests are made of Orangutan still looks intact, but most of the leaves have started to wilt and there are small holes in the nests). The distribution of the nest and trees of Sumatran Orangutan (Pongo abelii) had clumped spasial patterns of distribution, with a dispersion index of 1.25, was on flat-very steep slope, altitude 401-1400 meters above sea level and had NDVI values 0.15-0.61, mixed plantation and secondary forests in the villages around of Dolok Sibual-buali Natural Reserve, exactly in Bulu Mario, Aek Nabara and Huraba villages. Keywords : Pongo abelii, Syzygium sp., Quercus gemelliflora Blume, Identification and Mapping of the Tree and Nest of Sumatran Orangutan

Abstract

is Sumatran Orangutan (Pongo abelii). as a result of orangutan habitat fragmentation, there are problems arised such as conflicts between human and orangutan. This study aims to do mapping conflict area and analyze the biophysical factors that support the conflict between orangutan and the villagers around Dolok Sibual-buali Natural Reserve. By using the coordinates of human-orangutan conflict location, and then processed using Geographic Information System application to identify several factors such as altitude, slope, distance from the river, distance from the road, distance from the forest area, and the land use.  This research showed that the human orangutan conflict-prone area is in the location with secondary tropical dry land forest cover type in the altitude between 742-1051 m asl, at 0-8%, 8-15%, 15-25% range of slope and the distance around 0-4250 meters from Dolok Sibual-buali Natural Reserve area. The result of Rank Spearman correlation test showed that the strongest physical factor effect of this case is the field’s distance from forest area and the weakest effect is the field’s distance from the river. Keywords: Orangutan Sumatra, Human-orangutan conflict,Conflict Area Mapping, Dolok Sibual-buali Natural Reserve

Abstract

The activities of people caused the high rate of mangrove degradation in Percut Sei Tuan District Deli Serdang Regency. The activities were found such as marine aquaculture in ponds, new settlements, or the oil palm plantations. It will disturb the mangrove ecosystems and coastal ecosystems that are essential for the existence of migratory birds as well as wildlife habitat in water as spawning ground, nursery ground, and feeding ground areas. It also functions as a barrier for abrasion and seawater intrusion. This study seeked to analyze the extent of degradation in mangrove forests in Percut Sei Tuan District. There were two methods as well as direct and indirect. Direct analysis was intended to see degradation level of mangrove forest based on analysis in the field and then analyzed again the degradation rate, which refered to the Decree of the Minister of Environment of Indonesia, Number 201/2004 on the Criteria and Guidelines for Determining Damage of Mangrove Forests. The indirect method was to perform the analysis of degradation level of mangrove forests based on NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) using Landsat 8 satellite image. This research was expected to give figures of the current mangrove forest in Percut Sei Tuan District and the degradation level. The results showed that mangrove forest in Percut Sei Tuan District in damage category with 4.161% of crown closure and there was 168.7 ha in damage category based on NDVI value. Keywords : mangrove degradation level, NDVI, standard criteria, Percut Sei Tuan

Abstract

There are some environmental problems in the development of urban areas including air, water and soil pollution. The high growth level of population which are followed by the establishment of industrial zones and settlements areas have cause less of vegetation areas. The purpose of this study was to identify areas which is potential to be developed as afforestation areas using geographic information systems by applications using SPOT 5 satellite imagey. Afforestation planning of bare land is in the form of afforestation in settlements areaswith total area of 7.14 hectares. Afforestation planning in the green belt is afforestation along roads and the river. There is 169.52 kilometers of road length to be afforested. Suitable plant species could be Pterocarpus indicus, Filicium decipiens, Polyalthia longifolia, Mimusops elengi, Switenia mahagoni, Casuarina equisetifolia, and Oreodoxa regia. Along the river bank of 17.27 kilometers length is recommended to be afforested with bamboo plants. Keywords: Reboisation Planning, SPOT 5 imagery, Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

Abstract

The absence of information about the level of change in vegetation index (NDVI) of forest land in the Nature Reserve Dolok Sibual-Buali is unclear. The decrease of NDVI would be related to forest damage. Forest damage will impact on the decrease of forest functions, especially its function as regulator of water management, flood prevention, erosion and carbon sequestration. This research was conducted in Nature Reserve Dolok Sibual-buali in May-September 2009 using Geographic Information System (GIS), Remote Sensing (RS) and Global Positioning System (GPS), which are three very useful spatial technology. Spatial analysis was done by overlaying several spatial data (parameters determining forest damage vulnerability level) to produce a new mapping units (land units) which will be used as the unit of analysis. The results showed regional nature reserve area Dolok Sibual-Buali is well preserved with class area from 0.4 to 0.8 (tropical rain forest) amounted to 4049.71 hectares, an increase of 32.15% vegetation cover to the class from 0.4 to 0.8 (tropical rain forest) in the nature reserve area Dolok Sibual-buali. Based on the analysis, nature reserve area Dolok Sibual-buali well preserved becausedof biophysical conditions taht forest cover which is at a high altitude with a moderate to steep slopes and quite far from the road and also does not have a big river. Causing difficulty of access into the area and also the absense of conveyace of natural wood. Keywords: GIS, RS, NDVI, Vegetation Coverage Change, overlays, Dolok Sibual-buali Nature Reserve
