Abstract

Protection forest becomes a forest area with the main function as protection of life support systems. The health condition of protected forests has a great influence on the environment of the ecosystem. It is important to assess the health of protected forests in view of their main function. Thus to determine the health condition of the forest, one indicator that can be used is tree biodiversity. Biodiversity is the richness of life found on earth. Assessment of biodiversity indicators is very necessary to do because it is sensitive to changes, ecological system indicators, spatial heterogeneity, temporal, and and the order in the food chain. This study aims to determine the diversity of tree species in protected forest areas managed by HKm Beringin Jaya as an indicator of forest health assessment. The study was conducted using the Forest Health Monitoring (FHM) method. The results showed that the final value of forest health status with indicators of biodiversity (tree species diversity) in the protected forest area managed by HKm Beringin Jaya was in the good category of 50% in cluster plots (2, 5 and 6) and bad by 50% on cluster plots (1, 3 and 4), thus showing that the protected forest area managed by HKm Beringin Jaya has a fairly healthy (stable) condition with a moderate category.

Abstract

Global climate change and forest health are currently two things that need to be studied more deeply. Forests store carbon, including in the community forests. A healthy forest can perform its function properly including as a carbon sinker as well as a carbon repository. This study aims to analyze carbon storage as an indicator of forest health in community forests in Pinang Jaya Village. The data were collected by using cluster plots based on the method of Forest Health Monitoring (FHM), totaling 15 units. The measurement method used is destructive and non-destructive. The result showed that the average carbon storage in community forests in Pinang Jaya Village is 54.59 tC/ha. The largest contribution to carbon storage was AGB with a percentage of 95.71%, followed by necromass at 4.23%, and 0.05% litter and understorey. Based on the results of the analysis, carbon storage can perform as an indicator of forest health in the community forests of Pinang Jaya Village with the bad, medium, and good categories. The plot clusters are in the Good category (70.61 tC/ha - 83.66 tC/ha), namely cluster plots 13, Moderate categories (57.55 tC/ha - 70.60 tC/ha), namely cluster plots 4 and 14, and the Bad category (44.49 tC/ha - 57.54 tC/ha), namely cluster plots 1-3, 5-12.15, with the percentage of each category of 7%, 13%, and 80%.

Abstract

Conservation forests must maintain the function and quality of their forests so that the preservation of the living natural resources therein is not damaged and the balance of the ecosystem is well ordered. The benefits of a conservation forest can be felt by the people who live around the forest such as carbon, water sources, non-timber forest products so that the community can prosper. Forest health monitoring is an activity designed to monitor the condition of forest health based on the results of measurable ecological indicators for forest management decision making. The purpose of this study is to determine the value of conservation forest health status and identify internal and external factors of conservation forest health. The method used is Forest Health Monitoring for assessing forest health status and Statistical Product and Service Solutions 20. software for determining the relationship of internal factors with external forest health. The results showed the health status of the conservation forest included in the management area of the Sustainable Peoples Forest System Farmer Group in the Teluk Pandan sub-district of Pesawaran District included in the medium category (3,20) . Internal factors that affect the health of conservation forests are biodiversity and tree damage while external factors that affect the health of conservation forests are the level of farmers' knowledge, farmer participation and farmer motivation.

Abstract

The role of protected areas has been expanded into climate change mitigation, specifically on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+). A reliable and practical method for measuring, reporting and verifying carbon stock is an essential component for REDD+. This study aims to recognize the characteristic and estimate aboveground forest carbon (AGC) stock in the tropical protected tropical area using a combination of terrestrial forest inventory and spatial data. A 168 cluster plots totaling 33.6 hectares were taken proportionally based on the percentage of forest cover types (dryland primary natural forest/DPF and dryland secondary natural forest/DSF) using a traditional forest inventory method (more than 5 cm dbh). Results showed that Bukit Tigapuluh National Park secured a significant AGC stock which has been estimated to be 269.2 [247.07; 291.43] tC/ha or 35,823,639 [32,872,312; 38,774,966] tC in total, being stored in approximately 133,051 hectares of the tropical rain forest. This result was higher than other studies in non-protected areas but slightly lower than other studies within protected areas. This finding supported the argument that protected areas possess a higher figure of AGC stock than other forest management units. The high amount of forest carbon biomass in the protected areas shall be very important assets for conducting the role of conservation for REDD+.

Abstract

Sustainable forest management can be achieved through an assessment of forest health. The tree damage assessment aims to measure the level of disturbance in the trees so that in the end forest conditions can be detected and decision making by forest managers can be carried out appropriately. This study aims to assess tree damage in several forest functions. The use of the Geographic Information System (GIS) is vital, where the distribution of tree damage conditions can be spatially determined, so that it can be described properly. The results of the analysis showed 17 conservation forests for healthy trees, 30 medium trees and 105 damaged trees. 51 production forests for healthy trees, 82 medium trees and 128 damaged trees. There are 75 medium trees and 56 damaged trees. The health condition of trees in several forest functions is in a damaged condition and needs attention from forest managers. There needs to be action by the manager in the form of maintenance such as pruning, silencing and fertilizing as well as harvesting actions with the right timing.
