Abstract

This study examines communication strategies mostly appeared during the learning process at an ESP class, the code switch occurred during the presentation, and the meaning of the code switch that the students used. This research was non experimental descriptive study. Samples in this study were 20 fresh college learners of mathematic study program in a class at University of Lampung. The results show that of the 12 Communications Strategies (CSs) available, the students used 9 CSs. The researcher divided CSs that is used by the students into 4 levels, High frequency strategies (code switching (36,28%),  time-gaining strategies (30,37%), and appeal for help (16,03%)), Mid frequency strategies (non-linguistic signal (6,32%) and literal translation (4,64%)), low frequency strategies (message abandonment (2,53%), topic avoidance (2,11%), circumlocution (0,84%), and approximation (0,84%)), non existence strategies (use of all purpose words, word coinage, and foreignizing).

Abstract

This article is a part of attempts to formulate and design a comprehensive rationale in formulating standard of communicative competence of English for Indonesian EFL learners. The study focuses on the perceptions of students and teachers on what communicative competence means, and how they perceive each component of the communicative competence of English.This research is a quantitative research concentrating on finding out the perceptions of students and English teachers on communicative competence in Indonesia. The subjects consist of 31 English teachers of junior and high schools in Bandar Lampung, 37 non English Language Teaching (non-ELT) students, and 56 English Language Teaching (ELT) Students. Fifty questions are designed to find out the teachers’ and students’ perception of communicative competence and its components. The questions were grouped into five categories: definition of communicative competence, linguistic competence, sociolinguistic competence, discourse competence, and strategic competence.Through ANOVA statistical analysis, it was founds English teachers’ perceptions on definition of communicative competence and strategic competence were not significantly different from non English Language Teaching (non-ELT) students and ELT students. Teachers differed significantly in perceiving the linguistic, sociolinguistic, and discourse competence from that of non ELT and ELT students

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui apakah ada perbedaan yang signifikan pada kemampuan berbicara siswa antara kegiatan belajar mengajar menggunakan teknik clamshell dan teknik grup diskusi. Control group pretest posttest design adalah desain yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini. Data penelitian diperoleh melalui pretest dan posttest. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa ada perbedaan yang signifikan antara kegiatan belajar mengajar menggunakan teknik clamshell dan teknik grup diskusi dengan level signifikansi (0.0040.05). Teknik clamshell memiliki hasil peningkatan nilai yang lebih besar dibandingkan dengan teknik grup diskusi. Sehingganya, dapat disarankan bahwa mengajar berbicara melalui teknik clamshell dan teknik grup diskusi membuat siswa menjadi lebih aktif. This research was aimed to find out whether there was a statistically significant difference of students’ speaking ability between those who were taught through clamshell technique and those who were taught through a small group discussion. Control group pretest posttest design was used in this research. The data were obtained from pre-test and post test. The result showed that there was a statistically significant difference between the students who were taught through clamshell technique and small group discussion with the significant level (0.0040.05). The increase of posttest and pretest of clamshell technique is higher than a small group discussion. Abstract

This research was aimed at investigating the significant difference of students’ speaking performance after being taught by using Jigsaw. This research was conducted at SMAN 3 Bandar Lampung in which the participants were 33 students of First Grade. The data were collected by using speaking test using. The data collected were analyzed through Paired Sample T-Test in SPSS version 20. The result showed that there is a significant difference of students’ speaking performance after the implementation of jigsaw, with a significance level at .001 (p .05).  This technique makes students get used to the target language being learnt and provides more language exposure that can help students to lessen their hesitance and reluctance in saying or uttering words or sentences in performing speaking in English. It is suggested for further researchers to investigate the effectiveness of jigsaw in teaching other language skills or aspects in different level of education.

Abstract

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui apakah terdapat peningkatan signifikan dari performa berbicara siswa setelah pembelajaran melalui gambar berseri. Desain pre-test dan post-test satu kelompok digunakan dalam penelitian ini. Hasil penelitian membuktikan bahwa terdapat perbedaan signifikan dari pencapaian siswa dalam performa berbicara sebelum dan sesudah pembelajaran melalui serial gambar. Nilai rata-rata dari pre-test adalah 57 dan post-test adalah 84. Dengan membandingkan rata-rata dari pre-test dan post-test, itu dapat diketahui bahwa peningkatan rata-rata adalah 27. Ini membuktikan bahwa skor siswa meningkat dengan signifikan karena p0.05 (p=0.000). Berdasarkan data, ini dapat disimpulkan bahwa terdapat perbedaan signifikan dari pencapaian siswa dalam performa berbicara sebelum dan sesudah pembelajaran melalui gambar berseri. Oleh karena itu, mengajar menggunakan gambar berseri dianjurkan untuk digunakan oleh para guru agar meningkatkan performa berbicara siswa.The objective of this research is to know whether there is a significant improvement of the students’ speaking performance after being taught through series pictures. The one group pre-test and post-test design was used in this research. The result of the research proved that there is a significant difference of students’ achievement in speaking performance before and after being taught through series pictures.The mean score of pre-test was 57 and post-test was 84. By comparing between the mean of pre-test and post-test, it can be found that the increase of the mean was 27. It proved that the students’ scores increase significantly because p0.05 (p=0.000). Based on the data, it can be concluded that there is a significant difference of students’ achievement in speaking performance before and after being taught through series pictures. Therefore, series pictures is recommended to be used by teachers to improve the students’ speaking performance.Keywords: improvement, series pictures, speaking performance

Abstract

Tujuan penelitian yaitu untuk mencari jenis kesalahan yang terjadi berdasarkan surface strategy taxonomy dan developmental category yang terdapat pada teks recount siswa. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dan writing task sebagai instrumen. Subyek penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas dua SMP Muhammadiyah Bandar Lampung. Hasil penelitian menunjukan terdapat lima jenis kesalahan berdasarkan surface strategy taxonomy: 1) addition, 2) misordering, 3) omission, 4) misformation dan 5) blend error. Selanjutnya, terdapat tiga jenis tingkatan kesalahan yaitu 1) pre-systematic stage, 2) systematic stage dan 3) post-sytematic stage. Blend error adalah jenis kesalahan yang acapkali dibuat siswa. Tingkatan kesalahan yang acapkali terjadi yaitu, systematic stage, lalu post-systematic stage dan pre systematic stage. Disarankan untuk para guru Bahasa Inggris untuk memberi perhatian lebih terhadap kesalahan siswa, dengan memberikan siswa banyak latihan.The aim of this research was to find out types of errors which are made by the students based on surface strategy taxonomy and developmental category that are found in the students recount texts. This research was conducted through a descriptive qualitative approach by using a writing task as the research instrument. The subjects of this research were the second grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah Bandar Lampung, in amount 20 students. The result showed there are five types of error based on surface strategy taxonomy: i) addition, ii) misordering, iii) omission, iv) misformation and v) blenderrors. Furthermore, there are threetypes of stages of errors, namely i) pre-systematic stage, ii) systematic stage and iii) post-sytematic Stage. Blend errors were the most frequently made by the students. This suggests that English teachers need to pay more attention on the students errors, providing students with a lot of practice.Key Words: Errors, Recount Text, Surface Strategy Taxonomy and Developmental Category

Abstract

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui pengaruh gambar pada prestasi berbicara siswa. Satu kelompok pre-test dan post-test design diaplikasikan dalam penelitian ini. Subjek penelitian ini adalah 30 peserta didik Kelas 5B SDN 4 Sumberejo Kemiling, Bandar Lampung. Data dikumpulkan melalui pre-test dan post-test dengan cara bentuk tes lisan. Hasilnya mengungkapkan bahwa gambar memiliki pengaruh yang signifikan secara statistik terhadap prestasi berbicara siswa dengan tingkat signifikan 0,05. Dalam hal ini, gambar dapat digunakan untuk memfasilitasi para pembelajar untuk meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara mereka.The aim of this study was to find out the effect of pictures on the students’ speaking achievement. One group pre-test and post-test design was applied in this study. The subjects were 30 learners of Class 5B of SDN 4 Sumberejo Kemiling, Bandar Lampung. The data were collected through the pre-test and the post-test taking the form of  oral tests. The result revealed that pictures had a statistically significant effect on the students’ speaking achievement with the significant level 0.05. Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui (i) kebutuhan siswa kelas lima sekolah dasar dalam membaca teks bahasa Inggris, dan (ii) untuk mengetahui apakah bahan bacaan pelengkap yang dikembangkan layak untuk siswa kelas lima sekolah dasar atau tidak. Desain penelitian ini adalah Research and Development. Subjek penelitian adalah 27 siswa kelas V sekolah dasar. Penelitian ini menggunakan berbagai instrumen pengumpulan data seperti angket analisis kebutuhan siswa, angket penilaian guru dan ahli. Data tersebut digunakan untuk mengembangkan dan mengevaluasi tiga unit bahan bacaan tambahan. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa bahan bacaan bahasa Inggris yang dikembangkan dalam penelitian ini dapat mencakup kebutuhan siswa dalam membaca dan dianggap sesuai untuk siswa kelas lima sekolah dasar. Hal ini dibuktikan dengan hasil skor rata-rata dari kedua angket adalah 4.31. Penemuan dari proses  penelitian ini  dapat  digunakan oleh siswa dan guru dalam proses belajar mengajar.The objectives of this research were to find out (i) the fifth grade students of elementary school needs’ in reading English text, and (ii) to find out whether the developed supplementary reading materials are appropriate for EFL young learners of the fifth grade or not. The research used Research and Development design. The subjects were 27 students of the fifth grade of elementary school. This research used various instruments such as need analysis questionnaire, teacher judgment and expert judgment questionnaire. The data were used to develop and evaluate the three units of supplementary reading material. It was found that English reading materials developed in this research are coped all of the students’ needs and are considered appropriate for the EFL young learners of the fifth grade. It was proven by the result of questionnaire in which the mean score was 4.31. The finding of this research process can facilitate the students and the teacher in teaching learning activity.Keywords: reading, supplementary material, young children, efl learner

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh interaksi antara tingkat kecemasan berbahasa asing siswa dan frekwensi penggunaan strategi untuk mengatasi kecemasan berbahasa asing terhadap nilai siswa. Sampel pada penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas tiga SMA Negeri 1 Pringsewu yang dipilih secara acak. Metode pengumpulan data pada penelitian kali ini adalah metode survei yang kemudian dianalisis menggunakan Univariate-ANOVA. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa tidak ada perbedaan yang signifikan terhadap nilai siswa berdasarkan interaksi antara tingkat kecemasan berbahasa asing dan frekwensi strategi untuk mengatasi kecemasan berbahasa asing yang digunakan. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa interaksi dari kedua faktor tersebut tidak menentukan tinggi dan rendahnya nilai siswa dalam belajar.This study investigated the influence of interaction between students? foreign language anxiety levels and their frequency in using foreign language anxiety coping strategy on achievement. The samples were randomly chosen from the third year students of SMA Negeri 1 Pringsewu. The writer employed survey method to collect the data and analyzed them by using Univariate-ANOVA. The finding showed that there was no significant difference of achievement based on the interaction between their levels of foreign language anxiety and frequencies in using strategies to cope with foreign language anxiety. It indicates that the interaction between those variables do not determine students? high score in learning foreign language.Keywords: foreign language anxiety, strategies for coping, students achievement
