Abstract

Different from traditional Islamic boarding schools with their emphasis on theoretical skills, Arabic learning at Modern Islamic Boarding Schools has active skills such as speaking (maharah kalam) and writing (maharah kitabah). Among modern pesantren that conduct a relatively successful Arabic learning is Muhammadiyah Boarding School (MBS) Yogyakarta. Based on this background, the author conducted ethnographic research to understand the process of Arabic learning in MBS. The conceptual framework used by the author is the theory of discourse and the theory of speech acts by J.L. Austin. This study found that learning Arabic at MBS Yogyakarta reflects the complete discourse construct of Austin's theory. Locutionary discourse manifests in the form of motivational jargons to learn Arabic. Illocutionary acts are embodied in the locutionary production of the discourse in a system of actions in the form of orders, explanations containing appreciation, threats, and promises. From the locutionary and illocutionary processes, an effect appears in the speech partners, who are the students, in the form of awareness of the urgency of Arabic as the language of Islam.

Abstract

Amidst the noisy discourse of disruption era, the orientation of education in Indonesia is in a crossed way. On the one hand, by the presidential regulation number 87 on 2017, the government wants indonesian education to foster its character education. On the other hand, the more pragmatic approach to prepare skill-based system of education as the answer to industrial demands is obvious in the more recent government discourse. Based on this background, this qualitative research tries to present liberal arts education paradigm as an alternative way to today’s form of education. By studying relevant literature resources, and by evaluating its practice in Zaytuna College as the case, this research argues that liberal arts education is in line with core principles in Islamic education which views human as holistic creatures with many potentials.

Abstract

Talking about education is certainly closely related to the generation of students. If we look at the current state of education, especially the quality that exists within students, it is very concerning. Cellphones that should be used for learning in schools are now only limited to playing games. Not a few students want to read textbooks, because they are busy reading chats from their girlfriends. Not even a few studens go to the mosque to perform Dhuha prayers and Fardhu prayers because they are busy tik-tokan. Generations of students are starting to spend a lot of time in front of gadgets. The generation that Allah says in the Qur’an as the Khoiru Ummah, is now a rare thing to see.The purpose of this study was to interpret the influence of gadgets on the level of learning and spirituality of students during the covid-19 pandemi. This research is a type of qualitative research with a qualitative descriptive research approach. Data collection techniques used are observation methods, documentation methods and interview methods. The data analysis technique used is Milles, Huberman and Saldana with the stages of data collection, data condensation, data presentation and drawing conclusions. The results showed that the influence of gadgets on the level of student learning, greatly decreased. Likewise, the level of spirituality of students during the Covid-19 pandemi, is very low. This is evidenced by the teachers who teach students at Madrasah every day, as well as student learning outcomes when doing daily tests and when doing assignments both at school and at home.

Abstract

The development of modern Islamic boarding schools‎ in Indonesia cannot be separated from the model built by the Gontor Islamic Boarding School. Gontor's education system is constructed to accommodate the continuity of Islamic religious traditions by adapting educational principles developed by exemplary institutions called sintesa. There are four specific inspirations of Gontor education: Al-Azhar in Egypt, Syanggit in Mauritania, Aligarh, and Santiniketan in India. This study aims to discuss Gontor education which is constructed from the educational philosophy of Aligarh and Santiniketan. The method used is autoethnography with the use of Giddens structuration as a theoretical framework. This study found that, in general, the influence of Aligarh and Santiniketan embodied in two aspects: symbolic and substantial. The symbolic aspect presents in the form of the nominalization of physical and non-physical infrastructure in Gontor. Substantial aspects are manifested in the modernization of the learning system and institutional governance, language skills, and the design of a holistic educational paradigm. This influence is manifested in Gontor education through a dialectical-structural step that involves the creative process of Trimurti, the founder of Gontor, to reconstruct the Aligarh and Santiniketan educational philosophies that are useful in developing and in line with Islamic education traditions. Keywords: Reconstruction, Islamic Education, Gontor, Aligarh, Santiniketan.

Abstract

One of the main problems of Indonesian education is the low professionalism of teachers. Many teachers in the country have low professional competence. Moreover, the low competence of teachers is mostly caused by a lack of motivation in carrying out work and improving self-competencies. In order to provide a perspective related to this problem, this study aims to analyze the concept of professionalism based on Imam Zarkasyi's thoughts about the figure of teacher. The type of research is library research with the data derived from the literature sources. The data analysis technique used the descriptive qualitative method and data validation used the source triangulation technique. This study found that in Imam Zarkasyi's thought, the essence of teacher professionalism lies in the spiritual value embodied by the figure of the teacher. From the so-called the ruh mudarris, the other competencies that support the teacher's activities are built, from mastery of maddah (material) that reflects professional competence, mastery of methodical skills (al-tariqah) or pedagogical competence, to teacher’s etiquette and character as personality and social competence. Imam Zarkasyi's thinking reflects the paradigm of professionalism that is socially oriented and accommodates spiritual values.

Abstract

Global War on Terror (GWOT) is a movement to combat terrorism internationally. It involves comprehensive strategy to defeat terrorism in every aspect, from military to economics, from politics to culture. However, the universal imposition of GWOT package includes certain degree of violence. The hidden violences behind GWOT are to be analysed in this research by the light of Slavoj Zizek’s framework regarding types of violence. Zizek classifies violences into two main branchs: subjective and objective. Objective violence consists of two related violences: symbolic, which is a universal imposition of linguistic terms, and systemic, which is smooth functioning of any system.GWOT therefore includes objective violences. First, its universal imposition of binary opposition term in counter-terrorism propaganda, “with us or against us,” represents the very logic of objective violence. Second, GWOT propaganda brings about the production of certain laws that violates the principle of human rights. This systematic abuse is a matter of concern because the factual evidences show us that it does not solve terrorism but rather inspires its reemergence in the future.

Abstract

Despite having identical demographic composition with the presence of the Muslim majority, the expression of Islam in Indonesia and Malaysia has a different nuance. Islam in Indonesia is more varied and open, while Islam in Malaysia is more centralized and formal. These different expressions must be influenced by the differences of Islamic education in the two countries. This study intends to examine the Islamic education system in Indonesia and Malaysia by describing the history of its development. By referring to library sources, this study conducted a qualitative analysis with the help of Michel Foucault's genealogical theory. With this theory, the author reveals the changes that have occurred throughout the history of Islamic education in Indonesia and Malaysia. This study found that Islamic education in Indonesia and Malaysia departed from the same origin: traditional Islamic learning. Differences begin to emerge when the British government accommodated Islamic education in the vernacular education system in Malaysia, while the Dutch marginalized Islamic education in Indonesia. The Malaysian government further integrated Islamic education into the national education system, while the Indonesian government recognized Islamic education in an independent form outside of state management. As a result, Islamic education in Indonesia has developed adaptively to the temporal challenges by producing diverse forms of education, while Islamic education in Malaysia is stagnating because of the politization. Government policy also influenced this adaptive character where the strict approach of the Dutch colonial government required Islamic boarding schools in Indonesia to be more independent and creative.
