Abstract

Students encountered several problems when trying to master a reading skill. Reciprocal teaching strategy was known as a guided comprehension strategy that encouraged the students to develop the skills that effective readers and learners did. This research aimed to investigate the perception of twelve students of Islamic senior high school toward reading utilizing reciprocal teaching strategy in terms of cognitive and affective aspects. It was carried out as a qualitative descriptive. The data were collected through observation, semi-structured interview, and open-ended questionnaire. The data were analyzed by using Braun and Clarke’s theory such as read, transcript, code, categorize and interpret the data. The results indicated that based on cognitive aspect, the students had positive responses such as reciprocal teaching facilitated readers to understand some texts, increased their capabilities to answer and ask the questions, estimated what the author means, encouraged them to think rationally, explained the new word, and summarized the next scene. Furthermore, the data also showed that the reciprocal teaching strategy had a positive response based on affective aspect such as supporting students to cope with difficulties during reading. Keywords: Reciprocal teaching strategy, Perception, Cognitive aspect, Affective aspect.

Abstract

This research attempted to explore how the KWL strategy facilitates EFL students' reading engagement. The participants of this research were three students of an Islamic Senior High School. Using a case study design, the researcher describes EFL students' reading engagement by observing and engaging them in in-depth interviews. For gaining the data, the researchers used semi-structured interviews and the students' artefacts of the KWL tables. The interview session was conducted through WhatsApp audio-recording as a preferred interview media by the participants. The result of the research found that the KWL strategy gives positive engagement and self-assessment to EFL students with several stages. Other researchers are suggested to conduct further research on similar topics related to reading engagement in EFL students. Several research possibilities will expand this research. First, future researchers can complete this study by looking at the students' needs in the classroom. The results of this study revealed that students have difficulty with vocabulary.

Abstract

Studies on the domain of language education indicate that gender stereotypes still exist in teaching-learning media for instance English as a foreign language (EFL) textbook. Since the study within gender stereotypes in EFL textbook has dominantly compared the representation of female and male or men and women, this present study focused on investigating women representation in terms of domestic roles, hobbies, dressing, and social expectation in EFL textbook for Senior High School students published by Ministry of National Culture and Education (MONEC). This study used critical discourse analysis (CDA) to investigate both visual and textual that represent women in term of domestic roles, hobbies, dressing, and social expectation on the selected chapters in the EFL textbook mandated by MONEC as one of the teaching-learning media. The finding reported women still represented stereotypically in term of domestic roles, hobbies, dressing and social expectation in the selected textbook. Keywords:  Women Representation, EFL Textbooks, Critical Discourse Analysis, Corpus Study

Abstract

The environment in which we are living is an important and inseparable part of human life. Any environmental degradation therefore will have both direct and indirect impact on human and other living creatures. This research is aimed at exploring the implementation of PBL and the students’ responses towards the implementation of PBL especially in relation to the ways the students learn English as well as raising students’ environmental awareness. Employing qualitative case study, this research was conducted at a secondary high school in Karawang. Twenty students of grade eleven participated in this research. The data were collected through classroom observation and interview. The result indicated that the PBL was implemented through several stages, i.e. preparation, designing the project, executing the project, project presentation, and evaluation. The analysis also revealed the students’ responses towards the implementation of PBL. It can be concluded that the students responded quite positively towards the implementation of PBL as an effort to improve the students’ writing ability as well as their awareness towards environmental issues. Besides its benefits, there are several concerns found related to implementing PBL including learning management, group work distribution, and facilities.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to find out the progress of the students’ listening fluency through Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL). The researcher used Classroom Action Research with twenty four samples at Senior High School or SMA Muhammadiyah Karawang who have experienced using Mobile Phone in any applications needed. To make the teaching-learning process clear and relevant should be supported by the experts’ theories, such as Howatt and Dakin (1974) stated that Listening is the ability to identify and understand what other saying. It is also supported by Howard Gardner (1983) by saying that Teachers have begun to understand how using audio in the classroom can increase the circle of readers by engaging learners with auditory and spatial intelligence learning style. Moreover, mobile phone is a portable device that can be brought anywhere and anytime we want to. Despite there is no agreement about defining Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL), (Traxler?s, 2005) defined mobile learning as any educational provision where the dominant technologies are handheld devices. Also, (O?Malley et al., 2003: 6) defined mobile learning as a type of learning that takes place when the learner is not at a fixed location, or when the learner takes advantage of the learning opportunities offered by mobile technologies. This study showed that MALL improved the students’ listening skill. Therefore, the researcher suggested that EFL teachers use Mobile Assisted Language Learning as an alternative way to improve students’ listening skill and teaching quality as well.

Abstract

Many of the students have difficulty in the ability to write good and correct English. The difference between English and mother tongue leads to an inability to choose words in the writing process. Furthermore, due to the lack of student motivation, students' interest in writing, specifically in writing narrative texts, is relatively low. Therefore, the use of film animation media can be applied to assist students in writing narrative text in English classes. This research uses a qualitative method, data collection is collected by interview that aims to find out students' experiences in the process of writing narrative texts that are assisted by animated movie media. The study participants were 11th graders from a public school in Karawang who were selected about 18 students. The results revealed that students feel the use of animated film media is an effective medium for teaching and learning to write narrative text.
