Abstract

According to “power” of their “truth”, poets have a responsibility in expressing the truth through their works. Therefore, the personal relationship between poets and their works is an absolute thing that can be examined from both personal and cultural point of view. This paper analyzes it through the poetry collection of Ballada Arakian (Arakian Ballad) (2014) written by Yoseph Yapi Taum (Yapi) with the main issue of how are the actual forms of personal relationship between Yapi and Arakian Ballad? This paper was written by using expressive approach to answer the issue. The theory used was the theory of power and truth by emphasizing parrhesia (fearless speech) and parrhesiasist (the one who uses parrhesia) according to M. Foucault. The method used was literature review and written interview to the poet. The result shows that the power and the truth owned by Yapi in the parrhesia implementation in his poetry collection, Arakian Ballad, express general themes about humanisms, religious, and reflection based on parrhesia: the poet’s personal relationship and the truth, the risk he faced in conveying the truth, and the poet’s responsibility as the parrhesiasist.DOI: 10.24071/ijhs.2019.030111

Abstract

This cultural study was conducted based on the primary data kasa’o (the traditional house bestowal of blessing) and wo’soDewa (the church bestowal of blessing).  The study was intended to reveal the elements causing the oral tradition Sa Ngaza (TLS) in the traditional ritual ‘ritual adat’ (RA) are still performed in the religious ritual ‘ritual keagamaan’ (RKA), the function and meaning of TLS in RA and RKA, how it has been inherited. The study used the theory of formula, the theory of semiotics, and the theory of practice, especially the practice of capital. The data were collected using the techniques of observation, interview, and documentation. Sa Ngaza is unique in regard to its pattern of formula in the same dimension in general and in the opening and closing formulas in particular. These formulas support the transmission of TLS, causing mori Sa Ngaza (the Sa Ngaza reporter) to be able to maintain the continuity of TLS and its growth in RA and RKA. The opening formula explains the identities of the characters. The thematic formula in RA and RKA reports different contents. TLS in RA emphasizes patadela (the ancestor’s massage); TLS in RKA emphasizes the Biblical massage. The meaning plurality in RA and RKA explains the acculturative relationship between the tradition and religion. In this relationship there is a shift in the identities of the characters, sa’o (the traditional house), and patadela. The hierarchy of leadership in the tradition and religion can save and hamper the oral tradition. Therefore, TLS can be generally inherited based on the role of leadership through families and society, religious institutions, and education.

Abstract

The object of this study was the novel Hunus by Sunaryono Basuki Ks. The novel Hunus was analyzed by using theory of structure and theory of literature sociology. The using of theory of literature sociology in this study was proper because the novel Hunus had an intense social depiction of traditional belief about the supernatural power of kris. The problems of study discussed were the structure of the novel and the myth of kris within the aspects of culture, religion, and education that were revealed in the novel Hunus. The structure of the novel Hunus encompassed: plots, characterization, and backgrounds. The plots of the novel Hunus used the plot of mix. The characterization was divided into the main character and the additional characters, the main character was Anthony Wright, and the additional characters were Anak Agung Ngurah Ari Maharani, Wayan, Husni, and Ida Bagus Sudiara. The background of place happened in Jakarta and England, the background of time was in 1990’s, and the background of social told about the life of Balinese people. The myth of kris in the novel Hunus was focused on three aspects; they were the aspects of culture, religion, and education. The aspect of culture discussed about the ceremony of Tumpek Landep. In the novel, it was explained about the procedures of Balinese people in purifying heirlooms, in this case it was kris, on the ceremony of Tumpek Landep. The aspect of religion discussed about the religious background of the characters who believed in the myth of kris. Tony with his personal religious principle considered that the myth of kris was just a fairytale or superstition which only applied to the people who believed it. Meanwhile Gung Ari (Tony’s wife) was Hindu that she believed in the myth of kris from generation to generation in the form of religious advice that had to be believed as customs which had existed in Balinese society. Then, his thought changed when he experienced the spiritual power of kris that "killed" everytime being impaled. Meanwhile Gung Ari (Tony's wife) was Hindu that she believed in the myth of kris from generation to generation in the form of spiritual advice or the ritual of Tumpek Landep that had to be believed. The aspect of education discussed about the education obtained by the religious characters that influenced the perspective towards the myth of kris that happened in the conflict of the novel. Getting the same formal education, but Gung Ari obtained an informal education from her family about the myth of kris. The myth of kris in the novel Hunus taught us that we must respect every faith in a society even though we were not born and grown in the belief of that myth.

Abstract

Abstract

This paper examines the setting construction in the ethnographic fiction of Orang-Orang Oetimu by Felix K. Nesi. Analytical descriptive methods, oral tradition, narratology, and setting theory were used to answer questions about: colonial and decolonial settings, socio-educational, ethnographic, and military violence setting. The results depict that the colonial and decolonial grounds left scars on the nation, which experienced previous neglect and alienation in their land. This long-experienced trauma affects massive social, education, and military violence behaviors. In addition, colonial and decolonial history also intersects with ethnographic, mainly traditional beliefs about local history and myths about “sifon,” which is a tradition of having sex after circumcision. Unpredictable and irreversible patterns of colonial, decolonial, and ethnographic settings are also shockingly strengthening the plot, proofing that the well-constructed set produces quality and innovative story, narrative, and narrating.
