Abstract

Speech act takes a significant role in the whole process of teaching and learning process by the teacher and students. In line with this topic, this study aims to observe more about the use of speech act by the teacher and students in their interactions in EFL (English as a Foreign Language) classroom. This study shows that there are three kinds of speech acts performed by the teacher and students: locutionary act, illocutionary act and perlocutionary act. Those speech acts are supported by theories of J.L Austin who investigated and invented the use of speech act. The result of the study indicates some uses of speech act performed by the teacher and student which is elaborated into extract explaining more about the use of speech act in EFL classroom. Locutionary act performed by the teacher and students is used when they are conveying an expression without any specific intention within. On the other hand, illocutionary act is committed by them when they are communicating some expressions containing a certain intention to the listener. Perlocutionary act is performed by the teacher and students while they are conveying expressions and the listener will show a response and act as feedback to what the speaker says. Hopefully, the study will help both teachers and students in the implementation of good communication.Keywords: speech acts, teacher and student interaction, EFL classroom

Abstract

Interruption is a phenomenon when one person takes the turn while another is already talking.  Most of the time, phenomena of interruption has been considered as disrespectful act or kind of rude. Contrast, Interruption could be supportive and cooperative act. This study aimed at describing what type of interruption is and reason of doing interruption made by English lectures and students in proposal seminar. This research used qualitative method which the data of interruption are taken from participants in three different proposal seminar conducted by graduate students of UNM by using recording technique. The results showed that types of interruption appeared in seminar are simple interruption, silent interruption, and butting interruption. Otherwise, the reasons of interruption which appears are seeking clarification, correcting, disagreeing, giving clarification, doubting and giving explanation. This is due to the fact that interruptions in this seminar were not violation.

Abstract

Slang is an important feature in American culture. It is more effective than standard or conventional English, so I interested to discuss and classify of slang words in the movie of “The Blind Side”. The purpose of this research is to classify slang words in The Blind Side movie based on the characteristic on Andersson and Trudgill theory. This research used the descriptive qualitative method. The data source of this research is taken from the movie script of the movie of “The Blind Side” cited from IMDB. Based on the research result, there are 8 slang words or phrases in the movie of “The Blind Side”, the slang is divided into four categories: (1) 2 slang words or phrases as the neutral syntactic level; (2) 4 slang words or phrases as typical informal situations and (3) 2 slang words or phrases as creative.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis study focuses on finding out whether or not the use of Digital Storytelling (DST) develops the students’ listening comprehension and to find out the students’ learning interest towards the use of DST. The research employed QUAN – Qual model. The writers gathered the data by using listening comprehension tests and open ended questions. The finding of the study revealed that the students’ result of post-test for experimental group was higher than the students’ result in post-test for control group. The difference of the students’ score was statistically significant; the probability value is smaller than significant level (0.000 < 0.05). The result was H1 is accepted and H0 is rejected. While, the open ended question result showed that students agree that learning English by using digital story is a good supporting media since they have used it for about four weeks in the process of teaching and learning.

Abstract

Code-Switching is a phenomenon that may occurs in Bilingual or Multilingual communities. Indonesian students who learn English as Foreign Language tend to find a way to master English by forming or joining an English Meeting Club. Code -Switching occurs when they try to speak English in their conversation. The aim of this study is to describe the type of Code-switching used by the members of English meeting club and reason why they did that switching. This research used qualitative method. The subject of the research was participants of English Meeting Club and the data of Code-switching are taken from recording which was converted into transcription.  The result shows that the members of English meeting club did three types of Code-switching. Those are tag-switching, intra-sentential switching and inter-sentential switching. They mostly used intra-sentential switching in their conversation and did the switching to make their utterances acceptable to the hearer.

Abstract

The people in TNS sub-district are the evacuation areas of 16 villages from the Teon Nila Serua Island, where each household is given an area of two hectares or 20.000 m2 to be managed into agricultural land and settlements. The total area of TNS sub-district is 24.208 km2 with a population of 14,354 people, and area of idle land is 290 hectares. The problem of this research is what factors affect the use of idle land in TNS District, Central Maluku. The method used in data collection is interview and questionnaire which are given to productive farmers during the Covid-19 pandemic as interviewee, while the data analysis method using multiple linear regression with the results obtained. The dummy variables of farmer profession, capital, technology and the dummy of the division of labor have a positive effect on the use of idle land during the Covid 19 pandemic, in TNS sub-district, Central Maluku. Beside that, the use of idle land and production yields is increased from before.

Abstract

The objective of the research aims to investigate whether or not the use of CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning) with Oxford Smart Choice Multi-ROM as an audiovisual learning software can develop the listening ability of the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Model Parepare. The research applied quasi-experimental design. The population of this research was the tenth year students of SMA Negeri 1 Model Parepare. The total number of population is 411 students and two classes of twelve classes were taken as sample by using cluster random sampling. The findings of this study as the effect of Oxford Smart Choice Multi-ROM to develop the student’s listening ability, as shown by t-test value (4.6) that higher than t-table value (2.000). It means that the listening ability of the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Model Parepare develop significantly after they are taught by using CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning) with Oxford Smart Choice Multi-ROM.

Abstract

The phenomenon of code switching and code mixing has appeared in our daily life as an event or a trend around us. Facebook as a social media has become of code switching and code mixing phenomenon. This study aimed to analyze and to compare the kind of code switching and code mixing in Facebook group of English Youth Community. The analyzing process of code switching and code mixing in English Youth Community was taken from some comments of the members in English Youth Community where the researcher took screenshot of the members’ comments on Facebook group then analyzed the code switching and code mixing phenomenon in the comments of the members. The resarch subjects of this study are the members of English Youth Community on Facebook group. The method of this study was descriptive qualitative since the researcher intended to obtain the conversations among the members of English Youth Community on Facebook. The result of this study showed that intra essential code switching is the most widely used in some comments in English Youth Community than intra essential code switching and extra essential code switching. Code switching and code mixing phenomenon are done consciously by the members because of the change situation or the change of the topic in the English Youth Community group.

Abstract

One of the requirements to pass the lecturer certification exam is to attach a TOEFL score. TOEFL itself is an abbreviation of Test of English as a Foreign Language which is used to measure how far a person's English ability is. In the various findings and field observations made, almost all lecturers who will carry out the 2019 TMT lecturer certification at the Ambon State Polytechnic have the same difficulties when they want to face the TOEFL test. Therefore, the Ambon State Polytechnic Community Service Team took the initiative to conduct TOEFL training activities for TMT 2019 lecturers so that they could overcome their difficulties on the TOEFL test by using modules compiled by the team. The results of this service activity show that the English language skills possessed by the lecturers have increased after the training. This can be seen from their pre-test and post-test scores. It is hoped that after going through this activity, they can test their abilities by carrying out the TOEFL test and can penetrate lecturer certification.

Abstract

This research highlights the speaking ability of the students which categorized in tenth year students of SMA Negeri 3 Parepare . The students were taught through role play method to know the improvement of the students speaking ability. The data collected in 2012 by applying quasi-experimental method, with two group pre-test and post-test design. The samples were taken of the research were consisted of 43 students from two classes taken from the population. The result of the data analysis shows that the students’ speaking mastery improved significantly. It was showed by the mean score of pre-test was 49.34 and the post-test was 71.304. It shows that the use of role play method can improve the students’ speaking ability of the tenth year students of SMA Negeri 3 Parepare significantly. Besides the different score of pre-test and post-test, the mean score of the students in post-test was 71.304 is higher than the Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimal (70) in SMA Negeri 3 Parepare. After analyzing the data by using the test formula, the result of t-test value in post-test was 1.868 and t-table value was 1.684. It means that the t-test value (1.868) was higher than t-table value (1.684).
