Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of job satisfaction in moderating the relationship between organizational culture, transformational leadership, and organizational commitment, as it is known that the unit of analysis is workers in small and medium industries. This provides benefits in managing human resources, industrial relations and organizational behavior in the context of SMEs, so that optimal human resource management results in optimal competitiveness as well.   The results found that job satisfaction can be an intervening variable for organizational learning and transformational leadership on organizational commitment. The results found that organizational culture affects job satisfaction and organizational commitment, and transformational leadership affects organizational commitment. But, leadership was found do not have influence on job satisfaction and job satisfaction did not have an influence on organizational commitment. On the other hand, job satisfaction was found as an intervening variable for organizational culture and transformational leadership in influencing organizational commitment. This research contributes to enriching the theory of organizational behavior in the context of SMEs.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic caused learning to be done with an online system, one of which is by using e-learning. The use of e-learning received a lot of reactions, both from the student and lecturer side. Lecturers should be able to make the best preparation, both in terms of materials, media, content, interaction and flexibility in the use of e-learning, so that students do not have difficulty in distance learning done. While students should prepare themselves as best as possible, both in terms of technology, ability, interaction with colleagues and lecturers, as well as motivation in conducting distance learning using e-learning. This study aimed to investigate student satisfaction in using e-learning as a method of distance learning during the COVID-19 pandemic, using Importance Performance Analysis (IPA). The number of respondents in this study was 132 students. The results showed that there are several factors that need to be improved, such as materials presented in e-learning, interaction with lecturers, availability of facilities, and lecturers. Factors that should be maintained included flexibility, assessment in e-learning that is felt to be appropriate, the benefits of e-learning, and students' ability to allocate time. Meanwhile, factors that are considered less important and do not obtain priorities include peers, easy-to-understand materials, ability to learn independently and understand tasks. In addition, students consider there are several factors that are considered too excessive, namely self-motivation, ability to understand the use of e-learning, independent learning process.

Abstract

This research was carried due to the fact the students’ skill in expressing the ideas in writing was still the major challenge. Writing had a less attention than other skills where it tends to be as a homework and the teacher did not put too much focus on it since it would not be tested in national exam. The objective of this research was to investigate the effect of applying process and product approaches on the students’ competency in writing descriptive text. This research was conducted at MTs.Islamiyah Medan, JalanSuluh No. 71 D Kec. Medan Tembung. The population of this research was the eighth grade students of the academic year 2017/2018. The sample consisted of 62 students taken by using cluster random sampling technique. The experimental group was consisting of 30 students taught by applying process approach and the control group consisted of 32 students by using lecturing method. Written test was used as the instrument. Each group was given a pre-test, treatment and post-test. The result of this research showed that t-test (17.36) was higher than t-table (2.00) and degree of freedom (df) was 60. The finalhypothesis showed that Ho was rejected and Ha was accepted. It means that there was a significant effect of applying process and product approaches on the students’ competency in writing descriptive text.

Abstract

The lack of students’ English-speaking performance seems tobe common problems found in the department of Englisheducation at the University of Muhammadiyah SumateraUtara. Those problems involve the lack of fluency andproficiency in English speaking skills. This study aimed toanalyze the students’ English-speaking performance and thechallenges faced by them. This research applied a descriptivequalitative design. The data such as the documents,observation, and interviews were applied. In analyzing thedata concerning the components of data analysis in theinteractive model, it was proposed by Miles and Huberman(2016). The data were taken questionnaire from 125 EFL ofsecond-year students were collected, then the researcher alsoconducted the individual interviews with lecturers and classobservation. The result showed that the most challengingfactor faced by the students' speaking performance was relatedto the students themselves. Speaking errors were frequentlymade. The errors dominantly covered into 3 categories namelymisused forms (44.8 %), incorrect omission (33.6%), andmisplaced and confusing words (21.2 %). Concerning theexternal factors, the updated teaching strategies should beapplied in terms of reducing the use of the mother tongue bycombining various speaking performances, collaborating withother lecturers to organize more English programs, and sharethe speaking teaching experience.

Abstract

This research was carried due to the lack of students’ speaking skill at the first year at English department. Speaking was still frustrating and they faced some problems in learning speaking because of many factors such as shy to speak, had low motivation and less self -confidence, afraid of making mistake. Talking Chips technique is a technique of teaching speaking which make the students interested and help them speak. In the course of talking chips, each member of the group gets a chance to provide their construction and listen to the views and concerns of other member. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of applying Talking Chips technique on the students’ speaking skill on the first year academic of English Education Department at University of Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara on the academic year 2019/2020. The research applied experimental research to know if there was a significant difference in speaking skill between the students taught using Talking Chips technique referred as experimental group, and the students taught using discussion method referred by control group. The data was analyzed by using t-test formula. The results of data processing on the experimental posttest and control groups showed very significant results. Thus, H1 is accepted and H0 is rejected because .000<0.05, so it can be concluded that there is a significant effect of the application of Talking Chips on students’ speaking of University of Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara TA 2019/2010

Abstract

This study aims to analyze how the kinship system of the Toba Batak language is compared to the proto language. This research is a quantitative descriptive study using lexicostatistical and glottochronological techniques. This study explains and describes the kinship of the proto language with the Toba Batak language. The kinship of these two languages will be studied using comparative historical linguistic studies. The data in this study were 200 Swadesh vocabularies spoken by each informant. The result of this research is that the Proto language (PAN) and the Toba Batak language have a kinship level of 56.5%. Where in it there are pairs of identical words recorded as many as 33 pairs. or as much as 29% and then 30% of word pairs that have sound correspondence both phonemic and phonetically and have the same meaning from the total data that have word pairs and 46 word pairs or 41% of word pairs that have one different phoneme.

Abstract

This study was aimed to describe the teachers perspective on the use of kahoot as the alternative assignment during pandemic at SMP Muhammadiyah 61 Medan. The qualitative method was applied in this research. The result showed that the teachers perspective on the use of kahoot as the alternative assignment in online learning was very good. However it is important for the improvement of how to use the technology for teaching-learning activities and especially in online assignment because the teacher can learn how to use Kahoot! properly by avoiding the disadvantages found in this research. The research raises important questions about how to handle the constraints encountered by the teacher while using Kahoot! Abstract

This research is aimed to investigate the challenges faced by the teachers in Pandemic COVID 19 in SMP Muhammadiyah 61 Medan. This research was conducted by applying descriptive qualitative method and having the data collection through observation and interview by online. Then the subject of this research was 5 English teachers. The data was analysed by having the step starting with data reduction, data presentation, data verification and drawing conclusion. The finding reveals that the most dominant challenges faced the teacher in online teaching and learning was the lack of the studentsknowledge in using the learning application used by the teachers. They were still not getting used yet in this strategy because their mindset in learning was still face-to-face and they were still dependent on their teachers. Another most dominant challenge was the students limitation of having smartphone and internet quota. These challenges are in need of solution so that the students can learn effectively through this pandemic.Keywords: Challenges, Teachers, Pandemic, Covid 19

Abstract

: One of the impacts during the Covid 19 pandemic was an increase in the number of open unemployment, including in big cities like Medan. At the end of 2020, many Medan City people tried their luck selling food in the Kesawan Medan area. Even though at this time the corona pandemic still existed, some consumers continued to shop at street traders in the Kesawan area of Medan. There are many factors that keep some people shopping at street traders in the Kesawan area of Medan, for example, with their needs that must be met, namely buying food. The motivation of consumers to shop for halal food at street traders is because the prices of halal food are relatively cheap even during the Covid-19 pandemic. This study aims to analyze the effect of consumer motivation on purchasing decisions of halal food at street traders in the Kesawan area of Medan. Primary data were collected through a questionnaire to 100 respondents. The analysis technique used is Simple Linear Regression. Based on the results of the analysis, it is known that consumer motivation has a positive and significant effect on purchasing decisions for halal food at street traders in the Kesawan area of Medan. Keywords: Consumer Motivation, Halal Food, Purchase Decisions
