Abstract

The concern of the paper is the bilingual education conducted at SMP Negeri I Bojonegoro. The study attempts to investigate and to find out the research problems dealing with the influence of bilingual education on students’ speaking English competence, communicative environment motivating students to have awareness to speak in English, bilingual methodology in the classrooms, and the impediments encountered by the teachers and students in employing bilingual learning. The research design of the study is descriptive qualitative using triangulation technique in collecting the required data. The population is seventh and eighth graders students of SMPN 1 Bojonegoro in the academic year of 2013/2014. Meanwhile, the theoretical samples of the study are taken based on the use of bilingual across subject contents (sciences and mathematics) at year VII A and VIII A. The result of the study shows that the program raises the students’ and teachers’ awareness in bilingual education as it is used in specific contents subject. It consequently enhances the motivation for foreign language learning.Keywords: Bilingual Education, Communicative Competence.

Abstract

Listening practices have widely been conducted face to face in language laboratory for years in language laboratory. However, students’ interaction and collaboration were not much emphasized because of teacher-centred learning. The teaching of listening in language laboratory focuses primarily on how to answer comprehension questions correctly without any interactive discussion. Students just relied on teacher’s absolute role in language laboratory. Thus, the students were not independent in learning listening. Meanwhile, limited materials used in listening instruction are mostly influenced by teacher educator’s textbooks whose content lacked of authenticity. Promoting online learning in listening practices and evaluating students’ outcomes through peer-corrective feedback through learning platform were needed to enhance their comprehension. This article highlighted five central issues, including: (1) theoritical framework of online learning; (2) edmodo as a learning platform for online mediated listening tool; (3) the selection of authentic listening materials; (4) peer-collaborative correction in listening tasks; and (5) the development of students’ autonomous listening through online corrective feedbacks. The impacts of this article findings successfully contributed to support teachers’ educators face-to-face language laboratory based listening practices while promoting students’ collaboration, autonomy, and comprehension.

Abstract

                                   AbstractAlthough listening comprehension remains a widely acknowledged tool for assessing and evaluating student teachers’ achievement in mostly Indonesian initial teacher education (ITE) context, the issue of listening fluency (LF) as one of the four strands of well-balanced language course has not received scholarly attention. However, in fact, LF is important for developing their automatic aural processing on authentic exposures. In response to this gap, this article discussed the result of LF test via graded serial news stories in normal speech rates to 60 English student teachers of a private ITE institution in the northern part of East Java Province, Indonesia, to examine their LF levels. Additionally, various responses of LF experience, massive spoken texts experience, spoken features inhibition, and LF instruction evaluative feedbacks were garnered as additional qualitative data via interview responses at the end of the research as well. The data obtained were then tabulated, categorized, and analyzed. The finding of the research mainly found that, on average, their LF score was 66. It reveals that their LF level was under the normal speech rate required in longer aural texts found in real-life listening. The findings may raise the awareness of possibility including LF in the prescribed listening curriculum for training student teachers’ language proficiency.  AbstrakWalaupun pemahaman menyimak secara luas dikenal sebagai alat penilaian dan evaluasi prestasi mahasiswa calon guru di hampir semua institusi pendidikan calon guru di Indonesia, isu kelancaran menyimak sebagai salah satu dari empat pilar program bahasa yang berimbang belum secara ilmiah mendapat perhatian. Meskipun demikian, kelancaran menyimak dirasa penting untuk mengembangkan proses pemahaman teks lesan otentik secara otomatis. Oleh karena itu, artikel ini memaparkan hasil tes menyimak via teks lesan berita serial berjenjang dalam tingkat kecepatan normal terhadap 60 mahasiswa calon guru bahasa Inggris di sebuah institusi keguruan di bagian utara Provinsi Jawa Timur untuk menguji tingkat kelancaran menyimak mereka. Selain itu, beragam respons pengalaman mahasiswa tentangkelancaran menyimak, pengalaman menyimak teks lesan masif, hambatan-hambatan dalam bahasa lesan, dan umpan balik evaluatif terkait pengajaran kelancaran menyimak dikumpulkan sebagai data kualitatif melalui wawancara di akhir penelitian. Data yang telah diperoleh kemudian ditabulasi, dikategorisasi, dan dianalisa. Temuan utama penelitian ini adalah kelancaran menyimak mahsiswa calon guru bahasa Inggris rata-rata masih rendah, yaitu sebesar 66. Hal ini berarti tingkat kelancaran menyimak mereka masih di bawah tingkat kecepatan normal yang dipersyaratkan dalam memahami teks lesan panjang dalam situasi menyimak sehari-hari. Temuan ini menumbuhkan kesadaran akan kemungkinan memasukkan kelancaran menyimak dalam kurikulum menyimak untuk melatih kemahiran berbahasa mahasiswa calon guru bahasa Inggris.

Abstract

The Partner of this activity was SDN Pilang Kanor District Bojonegoro District. The majority of Pilang villagers work as farmers. From the agricultural production, they produce abundant organic waste. In addition, the organic waste is also produced from household kitchens and schools. Remnants of the processed food from the kitchen and food scraps from schools also contribute to the increasing amount of organic waste. Organic waste that accumulates will certainly have a negative impact on public health. Stacking of the organic waste can be avoided by reprocessing it; for example, organic waste can be reused into compost. The purpose of this activity was to provide training to the partners (SDN Pilang students) to make takakura basket (Takakura Home Method) as a medium to process organic waste into compost. This training was conducted for 1 (one) day with three main steps, i.e. preparation, implementation, and evaluation. However, the results and sustainability of the activities were monitored for approximately 2 (two) weeks. The group of students was given guidance by the university students related to the sustainability of composting through the takakura basket. The result of the activity shows that the partners of this activity are able to make takakura baskets and apply them to process of organic waste around the school environment. In addition, students' awareness of the utilization of organic waste in the surrounding environment is increasing.Keywords: compost, organic waste, Takakura baskets ABSTRAK Mitra dari kegiatan ini adalah SDN Pilang Kecamatan Kanor Kabupaten Bojonegoro. Mayoritas masyarakat desa Pilang bekerja sebagai petani. Dari hasil pertanian, mereka menghasilkan sampah organik yang melimpah. Selain itu, sampah organik juga dihasilkan dari dapur rumah tangga dan sekolah. Sisa-sisa olahan makanan dari dapur dan makanan dari sekolah juga turut menyumbang meningkatnya jumlah sampah organik. Sampah organik yang menumpuk tentunya akan berdampak yang kurang baik bagi kesehatan masyarakat. Penumpukan dapat dihindari dengan mengolah kembali sampah yang dihasilkan. Misalnya, sampah organik dapat dimanfaatkan kembali menjadi kompos. Tujuan dari kegiatan ini adalah memberikan pelatihan kepada mitra (siswa SDN Pilang) untuk membuat keranjang takakura (Takakura Home Method) sebagai media untuk mengolah sampah organik menjadi kompos. Kegiatan pelatihan ini dilaksanakan selama 1 (satu) hari dengan tiga tahapan utama, yaitu: persiapan, pelaksanaan, dan evaluasi. Akan tetapi hasil dan keberlanjutan kegiatan tersebut dipantau selama kurang lebih 2 (dua) minggu. Kelompok siswa diberikan pembimbingan oleh para mahasiswa berkaitan dengan keberlanjutan pembuatan kompos melalui media keranjang takakura tersebut. Hasil dari kegiatan menunjukkan bahwa mitra kegiatan ini mampu membuat keranjang takakura dan mengaplikasikannya untuk pengolahan sampah organik yang berada di sekitar lingkungan sekolah. Selain itu, kesadaran para siswa akan pemanfaatan sampah organik yang ada di lingkungan sekitar semakin meningkat.Kata Kunci: kompos, keranjang Takakura, sampah organik

Abstract

TOEIC as the medium of the students’ professional development at Vacational High School. This article aimed at describing how to empower English-literacy culture through TOEIC training to the graders XII TKR 3, XII TGB 2, and XII TBSM 2 of State Vacational High School Dander Bojonegoro. The TOEIC training given including listening and reading skill. The result of this Community  Service  Program showed that the score of TOEIC training is low because of the students of State Vacational High School Dander Bojonegoro have not mastered TOEIC test. They did not know and understand about TOEIC. There is not TOEIC simulation yet. The student English background, especially on vocabulary mastery is still low. There were 81 students joined the TOEIC test. 26 students from the twelveth grade of TKR 3. 26 students from the twelveth grade of TGB 2. and 29 students from the twelveth grade of TBSM 2. The highest of TOEIC score is 64 and the lowest of TOEIC score is 8. The highest of  mean score is reach by TGB 2 grade with 32 score, and the lowest of mean score is is reach by TBSM 2 with 29 score. So, it is necessary to conduct another TOEIC training for students of State Vacational High School Dander Bojonegoro  So, what’s is your recommendation? Solution?Keywords: GLS, , TOEIC, Vacational High School ABSTRAKTOEIC merupakan sarana pengembangan profesional peserta didik pada Sekolah Menengah Kejuruan. Artikel ini bertujuan menggambarkan bagaimana memberdayakan budaya literasi Bahasa Inggris melalui pelatihan TOEIC pada peserta didik kelas XII TKR 3, XII TGB 2, XII TBSM 2 SMK Negeri Dander Bojonegoro. Pelatihan TOEIC yang diberikan meliputi ketrampilan mendengar dan membaca. Hasil PKM ini menunjukkan bahwa hasil skor pelatihan TOEIC masih jauh dari sempurna dikarenakan peserta didik SMKN Dander belum terlatih/terbiasa dan belum menguasai soal soal TOEIC. Mereka belum begitu mengenal dan paham tentang TOEIC serta belum pernah ada simulasi atau pelatihan TOEIC yang diadakan di sekolah sebelumya. Selain itu latar belakang Bahasa Inggris terutama pada kosakata yang berhubungan dengan jurusan yang mereka pelajari masih lemah. Terdapat 81 peserta didik yang melaksanakan tes TOEIC, 26 peserta didik jurusan TKR 3, 26 peserta didik jurusan TGB 2 dan 29 peserta didik jurusan TBSM 2. Hasil nilai simulasi TOEFL tertinggi adalah 64 dan nilai terendah adalah 8. Nilai rata rata tertinggi diraih oleh kelas TGB 2 dengan jumlah 32, dan nilai rata rata terendah dengan jumlah 29 ada di kelas TBSM 2. Oleh karena itu, perludiadakan pelatihan TOEIC lagi bagi peserta didik SMK Negeri Dander Bojonegoro.

Abstract

Teaching extensive listening for pre-service English language teachers program is aimed at allowing them to receive a lot of comprehensible and enjoyablelistening input. Unfortunately, their lack of listening competence and unsupportable classroom situation are frequently the main barriers for their comprehension. It has been proven that the use of visual media in video can improve students‟ multiple cognitive connections and make learning easier by addressing their auditory or visual strength. Meanwhile, teacher-centered learning style and passive activities in listening influence uninteresting classroom atmosphere. Therefore, teachers need to apply effective strategies that involve their listening stages development. Metacognitive strategy is considered as the effective listening strategy that benefit the subjects through raising their awareness of the use of strategy and providing a kind of scaffolding as the subjectsgo through listening tasks in pre-, while-, and post-listening stages. The purpose of the present research article is to know the contribution of Youtube videos and metacognitive strategy to students‟ extensive listening comprehension. In addition, this article is to know the implication of Yotube videos and metacognitive strategy toward classroom situation. Data was collected through 6 groups (12 students) using narratives inquiry approach written which was obtained from listening logs. The data was obtained from observation in language laboratory as well. The findings show that Youtube videos and metacognitive strategy can improve students‟ extensive listening comprehension. It is hoped that in achieving the objectives in teaching and learning listening, it is necessary to select appropriate media and strategy.
