Abstract

The integration of higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) in language learning assessments has become a crucial issue in 21st-century learning. However, not many teachers are aware of the need to incorporate HOTS in assessments due to their insufficient knowledge and the absence of good examples. Further, there is not much research and literature on HOTS-based formative assessment that can be used as references. This research aims to fill the existing gap by providing a model of higher-order thinking skills (HOTS)-based formative assessments for English learning, especially in junior high schools. By employing research and development design, this research describes the validation of the assessment model. The proposed model of assessment may be used as a prototype for assessing language learning.

Abstract

Technology integration in language assessment has been regarded as a common strategy in an educational setting. However, teachers need to adjust the perception and cogency of assessment in an online setting as well as the concept of formative assessment in online environments. This research aimed to investigate the students' perception of online backchannel implementation as a formative assessment in improving the students' writing skills in an English classroom. For this purpose, a mixed-method was applied with a closed-ended questionnaire distributed to 32 students and semi-structured interviews carried out to 24 students at the eighth-grade students of a state junior high school in Semarang, Central Java, Indonesia. The collected data were then analyzed quantitatively using SPSS 23 and qualitatively. The findings revealed positive perceptions of online backchannel implementation as a formative assessment in improving their writing skills. They considered it a new and innovative process of an assessment that helped them get the maximum result of writing. Furthermore, students' motivation and confidence in writing were raised. This study's implication calls for the implementation of online backchannel in English class as a formative assessment during the writing process.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan peningkatan keterampilan menulis teks deskriptif melalui Genre Based Approach pada siswa kelas X MIPA 4 SMA Negeri 5 Semarang tahun pelajaran 2018/2019. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian tindakan kelas yang dilaksanakan secara kolaboratif. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan pada bulan September sampai dengan Oktober 2018 di SMA Negeri 5 Semarang. Subjek penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas X MIPA 4 SMA Negeri 5 Semarang yang berjumlah 32 siswa. Penelitian tindakan kelas ini dilakukan dalam dua siklus yang pada setiap siklusnya terdapat empat komponen, yaitu perencanaan, pelaksanaan, pengamatan, dan refleksi. Instrumen penelitian yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini meliputi angket, lembar pengamatan, lembar penilaian, dan dokumentasi kegiatan. Teknik analisis data dalam penelitian ini mencakup proses tindakan kelas yang dilakukan secara kualitatif dan hasil analisis tindakan yang berupa skor secara kuantitatif. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan pratindakan saat proses pembelajaran menulis teks deskriptif, keaktifan siswa hanya didominasi oleh beberapa siswa sehingga skor rata-rata menulis teks deskriptif sebagian besar belum memenuhi KKM. Setelah diterapkan Genre Based Approach terjadi peningkatan hasil pembelajaran menulis teks deskriptif. Hal tersebut ditunjukkan dengan meningkatnya keaktifan siswa dan antusiasme dari siswa saat pembelajaran. Peningkatan juga terjadi pada skor hasil menulis teks deskriptif dari pratindakan, siklus I hingga siklus II. Peningkatan nilai rata-rata pada pratindakan adalah 70,5, pada siklus I meningkat menjadi 75,5, pada siklus II meningkat menjadi 81,4. Dengan demikian, keterampilan menulis teks deskriptif siswa kelas X MIPA 4 SMA Negeri 5 Semarang telah mengalami peningkatan baik secara produk maupun secara proses setelah diberi tindakan dengan menggunakan Genre Based Approach.

Abstract

Berbicara adalah salah satu kemampuan penting yang harus dikuasai dalam mempelajari bahasa Berdasarkan sebuah artikel penelitian yang ditulis oleh Sulung, Sutapa & Zainal (2013) masalah siswa dalam berbicara adalah partisipasi yang terbatas dalam berbahasa Inggris. Penelitian ini bertujuan dalam teknik Think Pair Share untuk meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara siswa. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mendeskripsikan penerapan teknik Think Pair Share dalam Teks Deskriptif untuk siswa kelas X semester 1 di SMA N 5 Semarang, meningkatkan siswa dan untuk membuktikan teknik Think Pair Share dapat meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara siswa dalam Teks Deskriptif untuk siswa, kelas X semester 1 di SMA N 5 Semarang. Desain penelitian yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah Penelitian Tindakan Kelas. Ada dua siklus dalam penelitian ini. Subjek penelitian ini adalah siswa SMA Negri 5 Semarang kelas X IPA 3 yang terdiri dari 32 siswa yang terdiri dari 21 anak perempuan dan 11 anak laki-laki. Instrumen yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah lembar observasi, tes, dan perekam video. Observasi dan tes akan digunakan sebagai metode untuk mengumpulkan data penelitian. Data Kualitatif dan Kuantitatif akan menjadi jenis data yang digunakan. Setelah bertanya kepada siswa satu per satu, semua siswa menjelaskan tentang Lawang Sewu. Kegiatan belajar mengajar berpusat pada guru. Berdasarkan hasil, diperoleh kesimpulan terdapat peningkatan kemampuan berbicara bahasa inggris dari siklus satu ke siklus dua.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui peningkatan kemampuan siswa kelas X MIPA 5 SMA Negeri 5 Semarang dalam menulis teks deskriptif menggunakan teknik Mind mapping. Metode penelitian ini adalah penilitian tindakan kelas. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan di SMA Negeri 5 Semarang. Subjek penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas X MIPA 5 SMA Negeri 5 Semarang yang berjumlah 32 siswa. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan dalam dua siklus. Masing-masing siklus dilaksanakan dalam satu pertemuan. Instrumen pada penelitian ini meliputi kuesioner, lembar observasi, lembar penilaian tes tertulis, dan dokumentasi kegiatan. Teknik analisis data dalam penelitian ini mencakup proses tindakan kelas yang dilakukan secara kualitatif dan hasil analis tindakan yang berupa skor secara kuantitatif. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa skor rata-rata pra siklus saat proses pembelajaran menulis teks deskriptif belum memenuhi KKM. Selain itu ketertarikan siswa terhadap kegiatan menulis teks deskriptif masih rendah karena hanya beberapa siswa yang antusias. Setelah diterapkannya teknik Mind Mapping, terjadi peningkatan proses pembelajaran menulis teks deskriptif. Hal tersebut ditunjukkan dengan meningkatnya ketertarikan siswa dan skor rata-rata hasil menulis teks deskriptif pada siklus I dan siklus II. Peningkatan skor rata-rata hasil menulis teks deskriptif pada pra siklus adalah 65, pada siklus I meningkat menjadi 77, dan pada siklus II meningkat menjadi 81. Dengan demikian, keterampilan menulis teks deskriptif pada siswa kelas X MIPA 5 SMA Negeri 5 Semarang telah mengalami peningkatan baik secara produk maupun secara proses setelah menggunakan teknik Mind Mapping.

Abstract

The objectives of this study are;1) to know kinds of teachers’ questioning strategies that teacher use in the classroom. 2) to know the way the teachers use the questioning strategies in the classroom. The design of the research is descriptive qualitative. The writer got the data of this research from interview notes. The observation sheet source of the data research were from the teacher and students. The Instrument used are observation sheet, interview, and document. The techniques for analyzing the data is descriptive. The steps were; comprising interactive reducing the data, presenting the data, and drawing conclusion. The result of this research shows that are: 1) The teaching strategies are; (a) the teaching techniques used lecturing, group project and small group discussion, (b) the seating arrangement, the students seating position changed, (c) the teacher give feedback when the students have difficulties, the teacher give some clue to the students to help them understand the material given, (d) the teacher evaluates the students: the teacher given task and motivations for the students. 2) The problems faced by the teacher are the classroom conditions, the crowded conditions, controlling individually, the interaction between the teacher and students in the classroom is ineffective, the students' less vocabulary, the limited media and the problems faced by the students are lack of confidence, the students have difficulties in translation. The conclusion are Not all English teachers in SMP PGRI 01 Semarang have good understanding of how to implement teacher’s questioning. Some of them still have some problems with their understanding. It is caused by some reasons, such as: (1) the teachers do not want to get out of their comfort zone, some of them are thinking that the most important part of teaching is how to make the students understand the materials; (2) they can not move on from their old views of teaching English in the classroom; (3) last but not least, because the training done by the authoritative government is not sufficient to make them mastering teacher’s questioning.

Abstract

In the 2020 era, the corona pandemic has caused many impacts throughout the country that are very broad in all fields, including education. Learners and lecturers are no exception affected by the pandemic, and always strive to be able to carry out teaching and learning activities that can cover deficiencies in the field. Based on the current complex learning and living background, this article discuss the autonomous learning mode of College English learners, puts forward the discussion of constructing strategy from self-assessment to improve autonomous learning mode of college English in writing classess. In discussing this article, the writer used theoretical review and qualitative document methods which were observations, data collection, data processing, revisions, and documentation. Then, it can be concluded that the results of research on self-assessment can improve learner autonomy so that learners can get the ease from online writing classes during the pandemic and in the future from direct methods (face to face) learning more beneficially

Abstract

This fnal project presents the analysis of gestures found in “A Quiet Place” flm. Themain purposes of this research are (1) to fnd out the kinds of gestures found in “AQuiet Place” flm (2) to analyze the function of gesture found in “A Quiet Place” Film.The method of this research is descriptive qualitative research. For collecting the data,the researcher should watch “A Quiet Place” Film. After watching flm, the researchershould fnd out the kinds of gesture in another journal or books then analyzing thekinds of gesture that found in “A Quiet Place” flm. The researcher found the kinds ofgesture that written by David McNeill and Levy 2005. There are four dimensions of theprevious researcher about the kinds of gesture: Iconic, Metaphoric, Deictic, and Beats.That are the kinds of gesture that the researcher will analyze based on the flm. The fourkinds of gesture is importance for balancing the speakers meaning when they talk, andwhen the speakers did not allow to speech or using their sounds. Study about gesture isimportant, as a student of English education the researcher took this subject because itrelated to cultural understanding and linguistics. The researcher chose “A Quiet Place”flm that relating to this research. “A Quiet Place” is an American post-apocalyptic horrorflm directed by John Krasinski in 2018, who wrote the screenplay with Bryan Woods andScott Beck. The flm stars Krasinski, alongside Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds, andNoah Jupe. The plot revolves around a family struggling to survive in a post-apocalypticworld inhabited by blind extraterrestrial creatures with an acute sense of hearing. A QuietPlace premiered at South by Southwest on March 9, 2018, and was released in the UnitedStates on April 6, 2018, by Paramount Pictures. This is one of the flm which is not havingany conversations. The characters are used gestures for communication. The researchersuggested the readers to be more understanding about gesture, and also the researchersuggested the future researcher that another drama or flm could be selected to nextresearcher and they could explain more about this subject because the gestures is notonly about non-verbal communication, it is related to another theory of body language.

Abstract

Speaking is one important skill of English to present opinions, ideas, and convey our feeling to other people. Based on my observation teaching practicum in a vocational school, the students speaking ability have less confidence in practicing English speaking. Except for the students’ problem in speaking teacher’s media in the classroom also influence the process of teaching and learning. The use of conventional media is still found in the process of teaching speaking in class. The writer will focus on her research in improving students speaking skills by using media is Vlog. The purpose of this study is 1. To what extent student’s speaking ability taught without using video vlogs in procedure text? 2. To what extent student’s speaking ability taught using vlogs in procedure text? 3. Is there any significant difference between students speaking ability taught using vlogs in procedure text and those taught without using vlogs in procedure text?. The design of this study is quasi-experimental. The data were gathered through quantitative data. The writer takes XI AKL 2 as a control class and XI AKL 1 as an experimental class. The research instrument is a test. There are two types of tests given, namely pre-test and post-test. After collecting data, there are significant differences between the classes taught using video vlogs and the classes taught without video vlog. The results of the study can be seen on the post-test after giving treatment. Were the mean score pre-test was 57.11 which was classified as unsatisfactory and the mean score post-test was 70.67 which was classified as good. The result of the sig 2 tailed was 0.00. If the value of sig ( 2 tailed) < 0.05 then there is a significant difference between the learning outcomes taught without using video vlog between taught using video vlog meanwhile, the value of sig (2 tailed) was 0.000 < 0.005. So it can be concluded that there was a significant difference between the students speaking skills taught using video vlog.
