Abstract

Blue panchax (Aplocheilus panchax Hamilton, 1822) lives in broad ranges of habitat from open waters to closed waters, including at ex-tin mining pits in Bangka Island, Indonesia. Variable habitats might cause morphological variations due to different ecological factors. This study aimed to assess the morphological variation of blue panchax collected from different habitats using truss morphometric characters. Fish samples (70 individuals) were collected from abandoned ex-tin mining pits of different ages and a river in Bangka Island. Twenty-nine truss characters were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis test and post hoc with Dunn’s test . The results showed that almost all of the body parts of blue panchax found in ex-tin mining pits and rivers were significantly different (p-value < 0.05), except some truss characters of caudal peduncle. The post hoc of Dunn’s test showed a positive correlation between habitats and truss characters (adj. sig < 0.05). Some truss characters of killifish were different between ex-tin mining pits with different ages chronosequence, and some other characters were different between pits and river.  This study provides the first data about the morphological variation of blue panchax in ex-tin mining pits of different ages. The data is valuable as a scientific basis of further utilization of ex-tin mining pits in the areas.

Abstract

Tin mining activities in Bangka Island have caused ecosystem damages including deforestation which has an impact on the loss of local flora and fauna, ecological imbalances, decreases in land and water quality, and heavy metal contamination such as Pb, Sn, Zn, Mn, Fe, Cr , Cu, Ni, Cd, and As. The post-mining ecosystem must be restored to restore its function as a life supporting system for the organisms in the ecosystem. This paper aimed to elaborate information related to the condition of post-mining land related to ecological damage and heavy metal contamination and the potential for the conservation efforts of bioaccumulator plants which can reduce heavy metal contamination and improve the quality of land functions. This paper was expected to be one of the references for making decisions on sustainable post-mining environmental management so that the land is habitable for the flora and fauna of the ecosystem. Some plants which have heavy metal accumulation potential are Calophyllum pulcherrimum, Cratoxylum formosum, Gluta velutina Blume, Gordonia excelsa Blume, Ilex cymosa Blume, Ixonanthes petiolaris Blume, Lithocarpus sp, Lophopetalum javanicum, Schima wallichii, Tristaniopsis whiteana, Acacia mangium, Enterolobium cyclocarpum, Gliricidia sepium, Delonix regia, dan Cassia siamea Lamk. The accumulator plants develop their mechanism such as rhizodegradation, phytostabilization, phytodegradation, phytoaccumulation/ phytoextraction, phytovolatilization, phytofiltration, dan phytodesalination.

Abstract

Tin mining activities in the Bangka Belitung Archipelago Province have led to the formation of pits that have not ideal water quality for aquatic organisms in general. Acidic pH and high metal contamination at certain age under certain causes only a few species are able to live well in these ecosystems. This study aimed to determine the identity of the pioneer fishes in ex-tin mining pit <1 year of Bangka Island through DNA barcoding based on COI gene. The pioneer fish in ex-tin mining pit <1 year were Kepala Timah fish dan Betok fish. Species determination was based on sequences similarity in NCBI and BOLD System showed that Ikan Kepala Timah had similarity with Aplocheilus panchax and its morphology indicated Ikan Kepala Timah was Aplocheilus panchax. The sequences similarity of Betok fish in NCBI and BOLD System showed that Betok fish had similarity with Anabas testudineusi and its morphology showed that Betok fish was Anabas testudineusi. The Kimua 2 Parameters (K-2P) Neighbour-Joining (NJ) clearly confirmed that Kepala Timah fish found in ex-tin mining pit <1 year was Aplocheilus panchax, whereas Betok fish was located outside clade of the group. It indicated that Betok fish was found in ex-tin mining pit <1 year can be expected as a morphotype of Anabas testudineusi that needed further confirmation in other studies, both molecularly and morphologically. The sequence data of COI gene of Betok fish found in ex-tin mining pit <1 year was expected can supported available sequence data of Anabas testudineusi in NCBI and BOLD System.

Abstract

Tin exploration and exploitation activities have resulted in damage and changes in ecosystems such as forest damage, changes in soil structure, degradation of soil and water quality, and potential contamination of heavy metals. The changes in macroecosystems also have direct implications for changes in microecosystems. One form of environmental change and ecological impact that is the main concern after tin mining is the presence of heavy metals. Heavy metal accumulation can affect the physical and chemical structure in an ecosystem such as acidity (pH) and high threshold value of heavy metal residues. Extreme physical and chemical conditions, including the presence of heavy metals, affect the biological ability of macro and microorganisms to be able to survive in the environment. This article review aimed to describe the potential contamination of heavy metals such as As, Cr, Cu, Pb, Zn, Fe, and Sn found in post-tin mining locations, heavy metal toxicity, the mechanism of heavy metal accumulation in an organism, and the handling of contamination through physicochemical mechanisms and biology. The results of this review indicated the potential contamination of metal elements found in tin mining locations. These metals can be accumulated directly or indirectly through the food chain, from producers, the lowest consumers, to the highest consumers. Various efforts can be made to deal with metal contamination including (a) physical and chemical (physicochemical) methods such as anion precipitation, electro-winning, electro-coagulation, cementation, reverse osmosis, and electro-dialysis and (b) biological methods such as bioremediation by plants (phytoremediation), fungi (mycoremediation), and bacteria (bacteria bioremediation). The review presented in this paper is expected to be important information in the effort to manage post-mining ecosystems for sustainable and sustainable use and development of the environment.

Abstract

These fishes not only provide insights into biological, biochemical, physiological, and developmental processes of organism’ life, but also the explanation of life’s capacity and limitation to adapt and survive in the extreme environmental conditions. Some extremophile fishes can survive under habitat conditions considered inhospitable for most fishes due to the presence of the environment stressors. The extremophile fishes have often evolved complex adaptation mechanisms to cope the stressor factors. One of the extreme environments is abandoned tin mining ponds, located in Bangka Belitung Archipelago Province as a tin producer. Some fishes have found can adapt to the extreme conditions of this habitat; low pH, low dissolved oxygen, low nutrition, and highly heavy metals contamination. Naturally occurring extreme habitat can be regarded as evolutionary researches that allow studying the ability of fishes to adapt and survive to altered ecological conditions. This paper review aimed to provide an overview about water characteristics of abandoned tin mining pits and physiology of extremophile fishes in terms of modification of physicochemical and biochemical. The result of research papers review indicated some species of fish such as Aplocheilus sp., Betta sp., Gambusia sp., Rasbora sp., Belontia sp., Brevibora sp., Oryzias sp., Puntius sp., Anabas sp., and Trichogaster sp. able to tolerate to the extreme conditions of abandoned tin mining pit waters. The ability of fish to adapt and survive in extreme environments such as abandoned tin mining pit waters is supported by the ability to delay hatching of eggs by entering the diapause phase. Another ability is the regulation of the body's osmoregulation or homeostatic mechanism against acidic pH conditions and heavy metal contamination in the environment.
