Abstract

This research aimed at comparing mind mapping technique and semantic mapping technique in teaching reading comprehension. It was intended to find out which technique (mind mapping or semantic mapping) was more effective to strengthen the reading comprehension and which technique was more interesting in learning process to the second graders of SMAN 5 Makassar, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. It was an experimental research. There are two classes taken as sample, XI IPA1as experimental 1 class, and XI IPA2 as experimental 2 class. Researcher collected the data through reading test and questionnaire as research instrument. The result revealed that (1) students obtained higher score after being taught under mind mapping technique as opposed to those who studied under semantic mapping technique (2) students who studied narrative text under mind mapping technique showed great reading interest.

Abstract

In the era of information technology, the power of social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other products of digital technology have led to dramatic changes to the social life of people in a pluralistic Indonesia. The establishment of a digital public space that can accommodate all entities, classes, or social communities to communicate freely, without limit and open up greater opportunities for the achievement of goals in accordance with the interests, both on the basis of political goals, economic, cultural, trust and ethnic , also helped to increase the potential for social conflicts with more complex backgrounds. One of them is the widespread of racism in social media against ethnic of minorities as it occurred during the 2017 Jakarta governor election involving Basuki Tjahaya Purnama, a candidate of the ethnic of Chinese-Indonesian. This paper seeks to explore the contribution of social media as a medium for spreading the hate of speech and racism and the factors that cause it. This article finds that; firstly, the development of information technology and freedom gained by every user in managing social media member space for racism group in Indonesia utilizes the progress of information technology as medium in spreading hatred and racism in Cyber space. Secondly, the existence of hate speech and racism in social media cannot be separated from socio-political situation in society.

Abstract

Learning  media  is  increasingly  varied  along  with  the  rapid  of  technological advances.  The  method  uses  a  lot  of  various  media  to  improve  the  quality  of learning outcomes. The object of this study was to identify the usage of online learning based to increase students’ interest in learning among students in Sport School East Kalimantan. The total populations of this research were 423 students. By using Slovin formula, it was obtained as many as 205 students. The data collection method in the form was an online questionnaire as research’s instrument. The questionnaire was sent by researchers and asked a help from SKOI teacher who become intermediaries as well. For administrative purposes in the process of data collection and data processing, Due to the COVID-19 pandemic conditions, some SKOI  students who  randomly  selected were  out  of  town  causing  the filling  of questionnaire run slowly. In the middle of 2020, data processing was carried out. It was stated that the data were normally distributed (pre-test and post-test data). By using Kolmogorov Smirnov test with a significant level of .000 with a correlation test level of .090 (indicating that the data has a high correlation), the data entered was significant, namely that the use of the Google suite for learning English was very significant

Abstract

The development of information technology that can be used as a learning medium is ICT (information and communication technologies). This learning model is an innovation that can be implemented in the learning process, not only in the delivery of learning material but also changes in the abilities of various competencies of students. In fact, some universities have athlete student who cannot attend in class because of his activities such as championship or matches. Based on the situation, the researcher should have a solution, so that the athlete students still can follow the lesson Based on the problem formulation that has been described, the research objectives to be achieved are 1). Increase motivation to learn English athletes at Muhammadiyah University of East Kalimantan through online learning; 2). Improving the results of learning English athletes of Muhammadiyah University students in East Kalimantan through Online learning. With learning using online learning students can facilitate them in accessing their courses, completing assignments without having to be present in class. Learning using open learning has been proven to increase the ability to understand basic English in athlete students

Abstract

As the output of community services research (Iptek Untuk Masyarakat (IuM) UMKT) held by the writers, this article casted lights on the development and coaching clinic of English language for convicted children of Lapas Klas II A in Samarinda city. The object of research was 37 people aged minimum 16. This article assumed that the organized and discipline condition of prison is an opportunity to improve juvenile convicts’ English capacity. Whereby, the learning condition is one paramount factor of strengthening people’s capability of English. The result of this program are (1) The knowledge and understanding English of the children were improved. (2) The fun presented in this program and the interactive method of plays attracted the children’s attention to learn. (3) The interest of children in learning English was improved (accounted for 92% of the student’s interest is improved within a 2 month period) (4) the convict’s capability of English was amounted of approximately 40% of students could speak simple English.

Abstract

On the basis of the case, the researcher is interested in learning about the literary references created in works such as the novel The Kite Runner, which is being studied. When preparing for a TOEFL or other English language proficiency test, the researcher believes that references will be required to clarify the comprehension obtained in the novels studied as part of the degree program. The research examines the novel The Kite Runner's anaphoric and cataphoric references. The research method used is qualitative, and the theory is Yule's theory of pragmatics, which is used to analyze the novel's anaphoric and cataphoric references. The researcher employs qualitative research methods because the data for this study are restricted to words or phrases that appear in the novel The kite runner. The purpose of this research is to examine the novel's references. The novel contains 19 anaphoric and 9 cataphoric references.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to explore students’ experience towards online-based writing portfolio. As the use of information technology evolved, the penetration of online lifestyle into youths’ life has inevitably come deeper. In order to get the students engaged with their lesson, it was decided to make use of some online platforms for the students to work with their tasks in writing course. Utilizing qualitative method the study involved 30 students of English Department in Universitas Muhammadiyah Kalimantan Timur. The instrument for data collection was a questionnaire with open-ended questions. The results showed that in general students were motivated to use the platforms as learning media for writing. They found it easy to write their essay assignments with these facilities since it could develop creativity.

Abstract

The existence of volunteerism could be observed from several aspects in various communities as it is functioned as presented action with intention to help others and expect less material compensation or monetary advantages. Volunteers working under organizational context rather than working alone, they provide two services namely service for the society. this study has several emphasizes that arranged into several objectives namely; to determine the level of motivation, satisfaction, and organizational commitment, to determine the relationship between motivation and organizational commitment, to determine the relationship between satisfaction and organizational commitment, to determine the relationship among dimension and organizational commitment, to determine the best predictor dimension for organizational commitment. The present study is using quantitative research design, therefore it used descriptive as well as inferential statistic to analyze the data. According to the findings, regression model fit the data (F=10.280, p<.05). Based on the interpretation on the value, it could be decided that only understanding dimension (t= 2.531, p<.05) had significant contribution to the organizational commitment among scout volunteer in East Kalimantan.

Abstract

This research aims to identify the types of deixis used in the utterances in the novel The Kite Runner. The method used in this research is qualitative descriptive method because the data were analysed in the form of words and utterances. The data were taken from the utterances which is uttered by the characters in the novel. The theory used in this research is Deixis theory by Stephen C. Levinson’s, the result of this research shows that there are five types of deixis found in the novel The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, those are: person deixis, place deixis, time deixis, discourse deixis, and social deixis. Based on the data deixis that have been found and analysed by the researcher in this research, person deixis is more dominant used in the novel.

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to explore how continuous professional development is conducted, who conducts it, and the factors that influence it. According to the laws of the Republic of Indonesia, teaching is a professional job that requires certain educational and training qualifications so that teachers can become professional personnel. By seeing the importance of professionalism in this work and in order to see the picture of the CPD of teachers in East Kalimantan, this research is important to carry out. This research uses a qualitative case study method. The subjects of this study were teachers (n=10) from ten schools in Samarinda, Kutai Kartanegara, and Balikpapan. Data were collected using a CPD questionnaire and interviews. The data obtained were analysed and presented with descriptions and tables or charts. The data indicated that most of the teachers participated in the study are aware of the components of professional teacher indicated from the government laws. The study also reveals how the CPD is conducted by different stakeholders. Some suggestions are proposed based on the results of the study.
