Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of teacher-themed movie to elevate the pre-service teachers’ efficacy in coping with the real teaching field. Based on a pilot study conducted by the researcher in a public university in Kalimantan, Indonesia, many students of teacher training and education faculty did not choose their department solemnly. As a result, these pre-service teachers, when got involved in teaching practice at a school, did not believe they could handle real class situation. They believed that it was difficult to teach the students in their real field, especially when those students came with various personalities. Hence, an effort should be done to help the pre-service teachers develop their self-confidence to conduct actual classroom activities. The design of the study was experimental design with one group pre-test and post-test. The subjects of the research were 34 senior students of English Department. In collecting the data, questionnaires of self-efficacy were utilized. The data was analyzed by using SPPS program. The results showed the pre-service teachers, who watched an inspiring educational movie, where in the movie the teacher was able to handle some most difficult students and turned the students become ones with better personalities, could affect positively to their efficacy. In addition, the effect of watching such ennobling movie was significant to raise the pre-service teachers’ self-efficacy.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to investigate the implementation of playing game on students’ mastery on vocabulary of ESP viewed from self-esteem in producing words. The investigation were: (1) to know whether Teams-Games-Tournament (TGT) was more effective than Grammar Translation Method (GTM) to teach vocabulary of ESP; (2) to know whether the students whose self-esteem was high had better vocabulary of ESP mastery than those who had low self-esteem; and (3) to prove whether there was an interaction between teaching methods and self-esteem to teach vocabulary of ESP. The research design used for the research was a simple factorial design 2 x 2. Simple Random sampling was used to select 48 students of two classes. Meanwhile, in determining the sample into the experimental and control class, the researcher chose the class randomly. The data were analyzed by using multifactor analysis of ANOVA 2x2 and Tuckey test. The findings of this research revealed: (1) TGT was more effective than GTM in teaching vocabulary of ESP. (2) The students who were taught by TGT had higher vocabulary mastery than those who were taught by GTM. (3) The students having high self-esteem had better ESP vocabulary than those of students with low self-esteem. It is concluded that: 1) Teams-Games-Tournament is more effective than GTM in teaching vocabulary of ESP; 2) The students having high self-esteem have better vocabulary of ESP mastery than those having low self-esteem; 3) There was interaction between teaching methods and students’ self-esteem

Abstract

Tujuan dari penelitian ini yaitu, untuk mengetahui dampak dari penggunaan metode Reciprocal Teaching Method (RTM ) dalam meningkatkan pemahaman membaca pada siswa kelas 1 di SMA Negeri 1 Muara Jawa. Metode Reciprocal Teaching Method adalah salah satu dari jenis metode lainnya yang dimana memiliki empat strategi : memperkirakan, menjelaskan, merangkum, dan bertanya. Pengumpulan data yang diterapkan dalam penelitian ini adalah kuantitatif dan kualitatif. Data dikumpulkan melalui observasi, test, dan wawancara, yang mana data tersebut diambil dari kelas yang berjumblah 34 siswa pada penelitian ini. Hasil yang ditunjukan adalah ‘ siswa menjadi aktif dan secara intensif kemampuan membaca siswa meningkat selama metode RTM di terapkan. Dan bisa dikatakan penggunaan metode pembelajaran Reciprocal Teaching Method efektif dalam meningkatkan kemampuan membaca siswa. Oleh karena itu para tenaga pendidik disarankan untuk mempertimbangkan metode ini untuk meningkatkan kemampuan membaca serta menanamkan ke siswa bagaimana menerapkan keempat strategi tersebut dalam pembelajaran membaca.

Abstract

Sektor kuliner adalah favorit para wirausahawan pemula di Kaltim. Kue getas merupakan salah satu penganan kue tradisional rumahan. Produsen kue getas yang merupakan khalayak sasaran pengabdian adalah usaha yang didasari pada warisan keluarga. Pemilihan khalayak sasaran dikarenakan adanya peluang bisnis yang lebih luas dalam pemasarannya namun terhambat oleh pengadaan media atau sarana dan prasarana penunjang baik segi modal, pemasaran, pengadaan alat, material/ bahan, dan pengemasan. Kegiatan PKM ini bertujuan mengembangkan usaha kecil kepemasaran yang lebih luas dengan pengadaan material dari sumbernya dengan mudah dan murah, serta menggunakan peralatan penunjang modern guna pengefisienan waktu dalam pengolahan. Kerangka pemecahan masalah terhadap usaha rumahan yang ada pada khalayak sasaran meliputi pengadaan bahan, pengadaan alat, pemasaran, dan pengemasan. Tim pengabdi melakukan pendamping untuk mengembangkan UKM kue getas baik dalam hal pengadaan bahan, pemasaran, penyediaan alat dan pengemasan yang memudahkan produsen dalam mengolah, mengemas dan memasarkan produk yang dihasilkan. Dalam pelaksaannya dilapangan tim pengabdi berupaya mengarahkan pelaku usaha untuk tidak hanya melirik pasar yang lebih luas namun juga meninjau aspek pengadaan bahan dengan membuka link pasar, alat yang ekonomis dan mampu mengefisiensi waktu, pengemasan produk dengan bahan yang ramah lingkungan dan pemasaran melalui media on line. Target luaran dari kegiatan PKM ini adalah dapat dimuat dalam artiel jurnal nasional dan jurnal PKM di Universitas Muhammadiyah Kalimantan Timur.

Abstract

Banyak siswa yang mengalami kesulitan belajar bahasa Inggris. Siswa merasa bahwa bahasa Inggris adalah mata pelajaran yang rumit, sehingga berdampak pada kemampuan bahasa Inggris siswa yang rendah. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis pemahaman membaca siswa yang dibelajarkan menggunakan SQ3R, pemahaman membaca siswa yang dibelajarkan menggunakan Reciprocal, dan menganalisis teknik yang lebih efektif antara SQ3R dan Reciprocal dalam pemahaman membaca siswa. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain pretest-posttest control group design. Populasi dalam penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas sepuluh berjumlah 35 orang siswa. Penelitian ini menggunakan sampel kelas yang terpilih dengan menggunakan simple random sampling. Prosedur analisis data menggunakan statistik deskriptif dan inferensial. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kedua metode tersebut sama-sama efektif dalam mengajar pemahaman bacaan. Hasil uji T-test pretest-posttest paired sample test terdapat perbedaan nilai siswa yang signifikan antara sebelum dan sesudah diberikan perlakuan, baik pada kelas Reciprocal, maupun kelas SQ3R. Hal ini dibuktikan dengan hasil uji-t (independent sample test), diperoleh hasil t-hitung 0,242 < t-tabel pada taraf signifikan 5% (2,042) atau 1% (2,75). Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa 2.042>0.242<2.75. Hal ini membuktikan bahwa tidak ada perbedaan yang signifikan antara kelas yang dibelajarkan menggunakan Reciprocal dan SQ3R. Pengajaran Reciprocal sama baiknya dengan metode SQ3R dalam meningkatkan pemahaman membaca siswa. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa Reciprocal Teaching sama efektifnya dengan metode SQ3R dalam pembelajaran membaca pemahaman siswa.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to explore students’ experience towards online-based writing portfolio. As the use of information technology evolved, the penetration of online lifestyle into youths’ life has inevitably come deeper. In order to get the students engaged with their lesson, it was decided to make use of some online platforms for the students to work with their tasks in writing course. Utilizing qualitative method the study involved 30 students of English Department in Universitas Muhammadiyah Kalimantan Timur. The instrument for data collection was a questionnaire with open-ended questions. The results showed that in general students were motivated to use the platforms as learning media for writing. They found it easy to write their essay assignments with these facilities since it could develop creativity.

Abstract

The objectives of the study were: (1) Describe the procedures used by the teacher in teaching English based on Genre-based Approach; (2) Describe the types of the classroom activities using Genre-based Approach; (3) Describe the problems faced by the teacher and the solution in teaching English using Genre-based Approach. The population of the research is the second year students of English department of UMKT in the academic year of 2018/2019. The samples were from one class. In taking the sample, total sampling approach was used. The data in this research were information about the teaching strategies and difficulties faced by the teacher on teaching English based on GBA and also the difficulties faced by the students of second year at UMKT. In collecting the data, it was taken from the sources by employing observation interview, and document. There were three main components of analyzed data, namely: (1)Reduction of Data; (2) Display the Data; (3) Interpreting. The research finding of this study were: (1) The Procedure of Teaching English: By GBA, the teacher feels easier to deliver the material; (2) Classroom Activities: Based on the implementation of School-based Curriculum in teaching English, the teacher conducted several classroom activities that consist of four cycles, namely BKOF, MOT, JCOT, and ICOT; (3) Problem faced by Teacher: The problems are the student's difficulty in vocabulary and pronunciation, teacher’s difficulty in manage the time. To solve this problem the teacher should give more attention to the students that less in capability rather than general students.

Abstract

In teaching learning process, the target language is an important thing which has been noticed by the teacher. The phenomenon about misunderstanding language is not only occurring in daily life with soft conversation but also in the formal education. In education event, when the teacher teaches students in the classroom, they use target language during activities. The aims of this study were to describe the teacher’s hurdles in using target language at first grade of Junior high school and how the teacher delivered instruction by using target language at EFL class. This study used a descriptive qualitative approach. This study used a qualitative description. Five English teachers were involved. The researcher collected the data as interview, and observation. Referring to the finding of the study, based on result of interview found the teachers problems used target language in teaching learning process, such as; the low vocabulary of the students, the ability of English skill of the students, the situation in the classroom did not support the use of target language, the time was not effective. Based on the findings of classroom observation in classroom the teacher delivered used the target language in simple sentence on greeting, giving instruction, asking question, delivering materials and closing.

Abstract

This article aims to provide some guidelines for teachers on how to conduct vocabulary instruction in their class because one of the main issues faced by Indonesian students recently is the lack of vocabulary knowledge that affects their English proficiency. Some studies showed that Indonesian students did not even know most of essential words in English, known as high frequency words. As a result, they may struggle to use the language in communication. Therefore, English teachers need to focus on helping students develop their vocabulary knowledge by teaching new words based on students’ need and introducing some vocabulary learning strategies that they can use to learn unknown words on their own at home. In order to provide a guideline for vocabulary instruction, this paper reviewed studies related to vocabulary knowledge, English proficiency, and vocabulary instruction in Indonesian context. The result of this study provides a guideline that could help teachers improve their students’ vocabulary knowledge in teaching unknown words and vocabulary learning strategies. This paper also suggests English teachers to conduct their own research to determine which strategies work best for their students, so students can apply that strategies to learn unknown words autonomously.

Abstract

This paper aimed at discussing online instructional strategies and learning quadrant for English language learning during COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, the current paper reviews possible instructional strategies and learning quadrant used by a teacher in the teaching process from online platforms to ensure the educational goals are plausible to be achieved, although without having to attend classrooms regularly, especially during the COVID-19 outbreak that happens during 2019-2020. Employing qualitative design, the study involved one teacher and 34 students. The data were collected through observation and interviews with the participants. The data analysis involved data coding, data description and data assertion. The results showed that although the participants did not attend a physical classroom, the learning process with various approaches for learning and assessments were still possible to engage the students.
