Abstract

The demands of 21th century forced students to master in English reading. Yet, the problems faced by the students in reading comprehension still become the reason of alleviation in university level. Therefore, webtoon expected to be the medium that can foster students’ reading comprehension. This experimental study aims to investigate the effect of using webtoons in teaching reading comprehension in English. The design of this research was quasi-experimental. The research sample consisted of the 33 students of X TKL/A (class A of Electricity Department) as sample of experimental class and 36 students of X TKL/C (class C of Electricity Department) as sample in control class. Multiple choice type of test was given to the student and collected as the data of this research. Based on the result of data analysis, the alternative hypothesis is accepted which is there is significant effect used webtoon in teaching reading at the first grade of vocational state school in Majalengka. The data analysis showed that mean score in experimental class that utilized webtoon as medium was higher than control class that used printed narrative text only as medium. The independent t-test result also showed that tcount was higher than ttable (2.019>2). In brief, webtoon as edutainment medium is effective to foster students’ reading comprehension especially in reading narrative text.

Abstract

This present study explain the appraisal devices especially the attitude types. Appraisal theory is the development of Systemic Functional Linguistics theory in the realm of interpersonal meaning initiated by Martin and White. This study used qualitative research with discourse analysis (DA) techniques. The object of analysis in this study is narrative text of the English textbooks for senior high school students published by the Ministry of Education and Culture. This study employed a document analysis as a technique for collecting data. The findings showed that there were 65 systems of attitude which consist of 19 positive affect, 25 negative affect, 8 positive judgment, 8 negative judgment, 1 positive appreciation, and 4 negative appreciation.

Abstract

This study is conducted to find out the attitudinal resources used by a student-teacher talk on online classroom interaction through appraisal framework (Martin & White, 2005). This research used a qualitative approach with adopted critical discourse analysis (CDA) research design. The subjects of this research were students in the fifth semester and teachers in Universitas Majalengka. The findings show that the dominant type of attitudinal system of student and teacher talk on online classroom interaction; The dominant attitude device found by students is Judgment which constitutes 23,33%, followed by Appreciation (16,67%), and Affect (13,33%). The dominant attitude device found by the teacher is Affect which constitutes 31,14%, followed by Appreciation (21,31%), and Judgement (11,47%). Students can use this kind of analysis a develop speaking skills based on character education that can provide basic rules for life and practice behaviors that reflect values. The way teachers and students express their emotional reactions shows their aspects and their relationships through the choice of language. The contribution of student and teacher talk in terms of appraisal analysis are; a sense of curiosity, sense of communicative, sense of responsibility, sense of respect for achievement, sense of honesty, and sense of independent.

Abstract

Pre-service teachers’ expectation in order to successfully carry out the instructional process in the classroom is for them to create the most of their educational experiences by conveying their knowledge to the students.  In this study, a case study was implemented, and it consisted of eleven future English teachers participating in a microteaching practicum that was led by two senior lecturers. The whole parties were aware of the purpose of the investigation that was being conducted. Based on the findings, pre-service teachers are almost unanimously of the opinion that one of the most significant aspects of the process of teaching and learning English is the contact that occurs in English between the teacher and the students. When teachers communicate in English with their students, those students are more likely to make an effort to communicate in English on their own. Therefore, English teachers should consistently encourage their pupils to use English throughout the entirety of the teaching and learning process with their classes.

Abstract

Abstract This study aims to identify and describe the type of transitivity that appeared in the Narrative text titled "Issumboshi" of the English textbook for Grade X Senior high published by the Ministry of Education and Culture. The method employed in this study was qualitative, and the researcher was the central instrument. The methodology utilized in critical discourse analysis (CDA), The collected data were analyzed with SFL that emphasized the transitivity system. This study is an adaptation of Nguyen (2012). To collect, categorize, tabulate, number, and compute the data. In this study, a qualitative methodology was employed, and the researcher played a crucial role. Critical discourse analysis's methodology (CDA), The collected data was analyzed with SFL which emphasizes the transitivity system. This study is based on Nguyen (2012). To gather, classify, tabulate, number, and calculate the data. The results of the study based on data analysis show that the most dominant process is Material Process which appears 56 times, The most dominant participant is an actor which appears 56 times, and the most dominant circumstance is Location which appears to consist of Place 19 times and Time 17 Times. In this story, the author describes most of the players as an actor that do several activities and actions.

Abstract

Learning activities are usually carried out face-to-face, but teachers also conduct online learning. Everyone is using technology, and it's easier for students and teachers to communicate. This study aims to describe students' perceptions of classroom management during online learning and find out the obstacles students face. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method. The data collection technique in this study used a questionnaire distributed in the form of a Google form regarding students' perceptions of online English learning. Respondents from semester 6 consisted of 10 students. The results of this study indicate that most students have many obstacles in online learning. Online learning is considered less effective to be applied in the learning process. Therefore, this data proves that research respondents have a negative perception of classroom management used by lecturers in online learning. The results of the study concluded that class management during online learning was not well received by students, so institutions need to make their students more comfortable, and lecturers need to improve class management.

Abstract

Artikel pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk memberikan pelatihan bahasa Inggris kepada resepsionis hotel. Pelatihan ini dilakukan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan komunikasi dalam bahasa Inggris para resepsionis hotel, sehingga mereka dapat memberikan pelayanan yang lebih baik kepada tamu-tamu asing yang datang. Pelatihan ini diselenggarakan dalam beberapa tahap, yaitu tahap pendahuluan, pelaksanaan, dan evaluasi. Tahap pendahuluan meliputi penentuan materi pelatihan, penyusunan bahan ajar, dan pemilihan metode pembelajaran yang tepat. Tahap pelaksanaan dilakukan dengan cara memberikan pelatihan secara langsung kepada para resepsionis hotel. Materi pelatihan meliputi kosa kata dan ungkapan dalam situasi pelayanan di hotel, serta latihan berbicara dan mendengarkan dalam bahasa Inggris. Metode pembelajaran yang digunakan adalah pembelajaran interaktif yang mengutamakan praktik langsung dalam situasi yang mirip dengan situasi yang sebenarnya di hotel. Setelah pelatihan selesai dilaksanakan, dilakukan evaluasi untuk mengetahui tingkat keberhasilan pelatihan. Evaluasi dilakukan melalui tes tertulis dan wawancara langsung dengan para resepsionis hotel. Hasil evaluasi menunjukkan bahwa pelatihan bahasa Inggris bagi resepsionis hotel ini berhasil meningkatkan kemampuan komunikasi dalam bahasa Inggris mereka. Dalam kesimpulannya, pelatihan bahasa Inggris bagi resepsionis hotel ini dapat memberikan manfaat yang besar bagi para resepsionis hotel dan tamu-tamu asing yang datang. Diharapkan pelatihan ini dapat menjadi contoh bagi hotel-hotel lain untuk meningkatkan kualitas pelayanan dalam menyambut tamu-tamu asing di Indonesia

Abstract

Classroom discourse is literally meant as the language and interaction employed by the teacher and the students to conceptualize learning in the educational context. Classroom discourse is a part of text analysis which is concerned with classroom talk. The current study is closely related to critical discourse analysis (CDA) to investigate power dominancy as well as classroom interaction strategies in the teacher-student talk. The data collected were analyzed based on the language meta-functions using SFL underlining multimodal discourse analysis. The findings reveal that the result of the study revealed that teachers utilized the imperative form to impose authority the majority of the time. This is likely due to the fact that students did not freely participate in all of the activities. They were calling on students' names in order to determine who would talk or answer questions the most of the time. the majority of the questions that the pre-service teachers posed were display questions. The majority of the students responded with brief statements rather than follow-up responses that were longer. the pre-service teachers employ a monologic discourse pattern in their seminars, despite the fact that they assert that they choose a dialogic one to use instead. It's possible that this is due to cultural scripts and the importance placed on the role of the teacher in the educational system. The findings of the study could be helpful to practitioners in the field in terms of employing suitable speech within the framework of EFL, which might facilitate students' participation and engagement in class interactions.. AbstrakWacana kelas secara harfiah berarti bahasa dan interaksi yang digunakan oleh guru dan siswa untuk membuat konsep pembelajaran dalam konteks pendidikan. Wacana kelas adalah bagian dari analisis teks yang berkaitan dengan pembicaraan di kelas. Studi saat ini terkait erat dengan analisis wacana kritis (CDA) untuk menyelidiki dominasi kekuasaan serta strategi interaksi kelas dalam pembicaraan guru-siswa. Data yang terkumpul dianalisis berdasarkan metafungsi bahasa menggunakan SFL menggarisbawahi analisis wacana multimodal. Temuan mengungkapkan bahwa hasil penelitian mengungkapkan bahwa guru sering menggunakan bentuk imperatif untuk memaksakan otoritas. Hal ini kemungkinan disebabkan oleh fakta bahwa siswa tidak secara bebas berpartisipasi dalam semua kegiatan. Mereka memanggil nama siswa untuk menentukan siapa yang paling sering berbicara atau menjawab pertanyaan. sebagian besar pertanyaan yang diajukan oleh calon guru adalah pertanyaan pajangan. Mayoritas siswa menanggapi dengan pernyataan singkat daripada tindak lanjut tanggapan yang lebih lama. guru pra-jabatan menggunakan pola wacana monologis dalam seminar mereka, terlepas dari fakta bahwa mereka menegaskan bahwa mereka memilih yang dialogis untuk digunakan. Hal ini mungkin karena naskah budaya dan pentingnya peran guru dalam sistem pendidikan. Temuan penelitian ini dapat membantu para praktisi di lapangan dalam hal menggunakan ucapan yang sesuai dalam kerangka EFL, yang dapat memfasilitasi partisipasi dan keterlibatan siswa dalam interaksi kelas.

Abstract

In an era characterized by dynamic shifts in the field of education, the pursuit of effective teaching remains a prominent objective. This study investigates a novel methodology that integrates hybrid synchronous and asynchronous methods to enhance students' English language speaking skills in the context of English language instruction. This study commences by underscoring the significance of possessing proficient English-speaking skills. Dynamic learning encompasses a combination of real-time interactions and exercises that can be completed at different times. The objective of this study is to elucidate the perspectives of educators towards the integration of hybrid synchronous and asynchronous methodologies in the instruction of English language skills, specifically in the context of speaking classes. Educators in high school or vocational settings ought to use a blended approach to English language instruction, specifically in the context of speaking courses. The research employed a descriptive case study approach. The study incorporated participants who were engaged in semi-structured interviews that encompassed questionnaires administered with high rates of close-ended responses. The findings of the study indicate that there is a significant impact of social and psychological elements on teachers' proficiency in online communication. The ramifications of these findings are of great importance for educators in the field of English language instruction. The utilization of hybrid synchronous and asynchronous approaches has the potential to enhance students' oral communication abilities within the classroom setting. In summary, the hybrid approach to English instruction, encompassing both ongoing and non-ongoing components, involves the inclusion of proficient-speaking teachers and actively engaged students in speaking-focused sessions.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengeksplorasi metode dan strategi yang efektif dalam meningkatkan keterampilan berbicara Bahasa Inggris melalui pelatihan. Penelitian dilakukan dengan mengumpulkan data dari partisipan yang mengikuti pelatihan intensif. Metode pelatihan yang diterapkan melibatkan kombinasi antara kursus tatap muka dan penggunaan teknologi digital, seperti aplikasi pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris dan sumber belajar daring. Selain itu, partisipan juga dilibatkan dalam diskusi kelompok dan kegiatan berbasis proyek yang mendorong interaksi dalam berbahasa Inggris. Tujuan utama pengabdian kepada masyarakat (PKM) ini adalah untuk meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara Bahasa Inggris untuk santri. Kegiatan Pengabdian ini merupakan kegiatan pengabdian yang melibatkan mahasiswa program studi pendidikan Bahasa Inggris di Universitas majalengka, dan tahapan pelatihan pada kegiatan PKM meliputi beberapa tahap, tahap pertama yaitu memberikan kuesioner untuk melihat masalah yang dihadapi para santri dalam belajar berbicara bahasa Inggris, selanjutnya tahap kedua yaitu melaksanakan pelatihan keterampilan berbiucara Bahasa inggris dengan cara berbicara Bahasa Inggris, dan tahap ketiga yaitu melakukan evaluasi terhadap pelatihan yang telah dilakukan dengan cara memberikan kuesioner kedua kepada para santri terhadap hasil pelatihan keterampilan berbicara bahasa Inggris. Hasil angket diketahui bahwa motivasi santri dalam berbicara bahasa Inggris meningkat setelah mengikuti pelatihan berbicara Bahasa Inggris. Kesulitan siswa berbicara bahasa Inggris karena keterbatasan dalam kosakata, pengucapan dan tidak mau mempraktekan berbicara Bahasa Inggris dalam aktifitas kesehariannya. Maka dari latar belakang tersebut dibuatlah sebuah pelatihan yang bertema, “Pelatihan Keterampilan Berbicara Bahasa Inggris”. Kegiatan ini dilaksanakan di Aula Pondok Pesantren Raudlatul Mubtadi’in Desa Cisambeng Kecamatan Palasah Kab, Majalengka, Jawa Barat.
