Abstract

The purpose of this research is to know how the distribution of inheritance and the position of daughters in the distribution of inheritance in Batak Toba and Minangkabau communities. This research uses descriptive qualitative research method. The data of this research consist of primary data and secondary data. Primary data was taken from the interview result of researcher with informant from both tribes, while secondary data was taken through literature study from journals, books and literature related to the problem under study. The results of this research show that in the Batak Toba community, daughters do not get a share of inheritance. The kinship system of the Batak Toba community embraces the patrilineal system, in which the lineage is withdrawn from the father's clan so that the inheritance belongs only to the sons. All heritages can only be passed on to the sons. But daughters can get the inheritance that is called holong ate. Holong ate is only given to married girls. The wealth gift is considered a gift of a father to his daughter. While in the Minangkabau community that embraces the matrilineal family system, where the familial system is withdrawn from the mother line, the heritage treasures are only given to daughters. Sons do not have high treasures and the low treasure (search treasure) is given to children and wives.

Abstract

The article writing found in the Jakarta post is essential to understand, especially in learning English and to know the quality of the article. This study aimed to determine what type of lexical cohesion is most prevalent in Jakarta Post educational articles and why that type of lexical cohesion is prevalent in the first place. The researcher used Halliday and Hassan's theories about lexical cohesion, which is lexical cohesion divided into two kinds, namely reiteration and collocation. There are five types of reiteration: repetition, synonymy, antonym, meronym, and hyponym. This study was conducted using the qualitative method. Data analysis used Miles and Huberman's model (reduction, display, and verification). The outcomes were discovered. Repetition occurred in nine items, synonymy in five items, hyponymy in an item, antonym in an item, meronym in an item, and collocation in five items. The most dominant kind that was found is repetition, with nine items. It is more dominantly found in educational articles because the article shows the quantity of affirmation of ideas or intensity and beauty in clarifying the contents of the text.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the students' difficulties in translating narrative texts from Indonesia to English in the third grade of SMPN 5 Percut Sei Tuan. This research employed the qualitative method as a research design. The analytical method is the interactive model: data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. The researcher collected data through steps by analyzing the student's paper when translating the narrative text into English. The result of this study showed that there are five types of difficulties in translating text, namely: not transmitted (11,11%), incomplete without hearing the message (12,96%), grammar mistakes (35,18%), vocabulary mistakes (31,48%), and addition (9,25%). Based on the test of the students' translation, this research showed the students' difficulties in translating narrative text. It was difficult for the students to translate a text, and some just used their minds or logic to translate it. The author suggests that the teacher focuses on teaching the students about translation and improving their vocabulary so that they can use good English when translating a text into English and another language.

Abstract

Abstract: The aim of the research was to find out the English Teacher Performance in Teaching Learning during Pandemic Covid-19. The subject was the teachers of Duta Harapan School Medan who tough through English Language. This research applied the anthropolinguistic approach. The data were the utterances of teachers while they were in online teaching. The analytical research used interactive model with three interactive steps, namely: data condensation, data display and drawing/verifying conclusion. The results of this research showed that the teacher’s performance in teaching English during the pandemic were quite good. The teachers had different tribes, social class and background. They showed different performances that used to convey the knowledge through explaining, advising, reminding, persuading and motivating. The performance was divided into opening, core and closing activities. There were found paralinguistic, kinesics, and material elements on the teacher’s performance. The teacher’s performance encouraged and motivated the students to study. Virtual meeting forced the teacher to upgrade their own ability, technologies, learning facilities, and speaking skill to attract student’s interest. The creative activities teacher appreciated the students’ contribution and activeness. The teacher show smiling face, happy face and clap the hands when the student did good effort. Keywords: English teacher, Performance, Pandemic, Anthropolinguistic approach.  Abstrak: Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui performansi Guru Bahasa Inggris dalam Pembelajaran Mengajar selama Pandemi Covid-19. Subjek penelitian ini adalah guru-guru Bahasa Inggris di Sekolah Duta Harapan Medan. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan antropolinguistik. Data adalah ucapan-ucapan guru saat guru mengajar online. Analisis penelitian menggunakan model interaktif dengan tiga langkah interaktif, yaitu: kondensasi data, penyajian data dan penarikan/verifikasi kesimpulan. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa performansi guru dalam mengajar bahasa Inggris selama pandemi cukup baik. Para guru berasal dari suku, kelas sosial dan latar belakang yang berbeda. Mereka menunjukkan performansi yang berbeda untuk menyampaikan pelajaran seperti menjelaskan, menasihati, mengingatkan, membujuk dan memotivasi. Performansi yang ditemukan terdiri atas:  pembuka, inti dan penutup. Terdapat unsur paralinguistik, kinesik, dan materi pada performansi guru. Performansi guru mendorong dan memotivasi siswa untuk belajar. Pertemuan virtual memaksa guru untuk meningkatkan kemampuan, teknologi, fasilitas belajar, dan keterampilan berbicara mereka sendiri untuk menarik minat siswa. Kegiatan kreatif menciptakan pembelajaran aktif sehingga guru menghargai kontribusi dan keaktifan siswa. Guru menunjukkan wajah tersenyum, wajah bahagia dan bertepuk tangan ketika siswa melakukan usaha yang baik. Kata kunci: Guru Bahasa Inggris, Performansi, Pandemi, Pendekatan Antropolinguistik.

Abstract

This article is based on the author's initial observations through interviews with students of English Education Study Program, HKBP Nommensen Medan. Researchers found several problems in achieving student reading comprehension, especially in third-semester students. This research method is descriptive qualitative, which aims to collect and describe information related to answers from respondents given to students through questionnaires and interviews. The subjects in this study were students in the third semester of English education at the University of HKBP Nommensen Medan. The sample in this study was 31 students. The results of this study indicate that 89% of students agree with Kahoot! Games are learning media that are easy to access and easy to use when learning English to improve students' reading comprehension, and 70% agree that Kahoot! Games are useful for students because they can help students explore English reading material delivered by lecturers.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui peningkatan kemampuan menulis teks deskriptif siswa dengan penerapan metode pembelajaran Differentiated Instruction pada kelas II SMPN 2 Bilah Hilir. Penulis menggunakan penelitian tindakan kelas untuk mencapai tujuan tersebut. Subjek penelitian ini adalah 28 siswa. Penelitian ini membagi persiapan, tindakan, observasi, dan refleksi ke dalam empat siklus. Studi ini menunjukkan bahwa keterampilan menulis anak-anak meningkat. Rata-rata pre-test hingga post-test untuk siklus I dan II adalah analisis penulis terhadap penelitian ini. Pada pre-test, nilai rata-rata menulis siswa adalah 61,82, dan hanya 7,14% siswa yang lulus KKM. Kemudian, nilai rata-rata siswa meningkat setelah peneliti menerapkan metode pembelajaran Differentiated Instruction. Hal ini terlihat dari nilai rata-rata post-test siklus I yang mencapai 73,10, dan siswa yang tuntas KKM meningkat sebesar 53,57%. Penulis melakukan siklus berikutnya untuk mendapatkan peningkatan yang lebih signifikan. Pada siklus II, nilai rata-rata menulis siswa mencapai 80,21, dan siswa yang lulus KKM adalah 85,71%. Dari data nilai siswa dapat dikatakan bahwa penerapan metode pembelajaran Differentiated Instruction meningkatkan keterampilan menulis siswa dalam teks deskriptif. Nilai siswa lebih tinggi dari sebelumnya. Akhirnya, penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa penerapan Differentiated Instruction sebagai metode pembelajaran untuk mengajarkan keterampilan menulis dapat meningkatkan keterampilan menulis siswa dalam teks deskriptif, yang ditunjukkan dengan peningkatan mereka di setiap hasil tes.

Abstract

This study focused on the analysis of source language into target language in subtitling strategies in the film God's Not Dead 2. This study aims to find subtitle strategies for each translation of the dialogue text in the film God's Not Dead. This research also focuses on applying Gottlieb's theory which consist of ten strategies, they are: paraphrase, imitation, condensation, transcription, transfer, dislocation, decimation,expansion, deletion, resignation. After  done that, the method that used to analyzed the data is using descriptive qualitative method. The researcher found which strategy dominated the translation of God's Not Dead 2 movie. The findings showed that there were seven strategies out of ten applied by translator in translating subtitle from source language into target language, they were:paraphrase strategy for 118 frequency (30%), transfer strategy for 80 frequency (20%), imitation strategy for 77 frequency (19.5%), condensation strategy for 40 frequency (10.1), expansion strategy for 6 frequency (1.5%), decimation strategy for 4 frequency (1%), and the last is deletion strategy for 2 frequency (0.5%). The researchers also find out 3 strategies unused in this subtitling strategies of God's Not Dead 2 movie, they are transcription strategy, dislocation strategy, and the last is resign strategy. The researchers concluded that paraphrase strategy was the most dominant uses with the highest frequency uses in God's Not Dead 2 movie and following with the second highest subtitling strategy was frequently used by the translator is transfer strategy.

Abstract

This study discusses the effectiveness of using Communicative Language Teaching in essay writing. The research method used experimental quantitative method. The design of research was a quasi-experimental research using a one group pretest-posttest model. Written test was an instrument that was applied in research to obtain research data. In analyzing the data, the steps taken consisted of 1) counting mean of pretest and posttest, 2) counting standard deviation of the pretest and posttest, 3) counting normality of the pretest and posttest, 4) counting the homogeneity of the pretest and posttest, and 5) testing the hypothesis. The result of the study shown that the using of Communicative Language Teaching was effective to be implemented in essay writing. This is proved by the value of tcount > ttable = 4.30> 1.70329. That means Ha is accepted and Ho is rejected. In this case, all students are more enjoyable in learning essay writing in class and they are motivated to improve their skill especially in writing essay

Abstract

This study aims to analyze assertive speech acts used by Dr. Jun Chen Hsieh during the teaching and learning process of exchange students. This study uses the theory of Searle and Vanderveken (1985:182-192) which explains the types of assertive speech acts. Qualitative descriptive is the method used in conducting this research, with data analysis techniques. The aims of this research are 1) to identify the dominant types of assertive speech acts used by Dr. Jun Chen Hsieh 2) To find out what the intended meaning is found in Dr. Jun Chen Hsieh. The findings show that there are 12 types and 153 utterances. Stating 60 times (39.21%), asserting 23 times (15.03%), reporting 22 times (14.37%), suggesting (9.80%), claiming 8 times (5.22%), concluding 7 times (4.57%), assuring 5 times (3.26%), confessing 5 times (3.26%), praising 4 times (2.61%), guessing 2 times (1.30 %). %), criticizing 1 time (0.65%), reminding 1 time (0.65%). Stating is the most dominant used by Dr. Jun Chen Hsieh during the teaching and learning process, stating can be the core of source information especially for the unfamiliar course and out of major course in the class. Stating be a way to intercultural students to get more information because it is possible to convey information clearly and effectively because it acts as a provider of information and explanations to students so that the use of stating can help students to enrich their knowledge as well as understand the message conveyed easily and does not lead to wrong interpretations. Then, the intended meaning found in these utterances is about grading policies, technical issues and roll call codes. This intended meaning funstions as take action behind the utterance, which is students should concern and comprehent to do something behind the utterance. Keywords: Pragmatics, Speech Acts, Assertive

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui efektivitas program Kampus Merdeka Mengajar dalam meningkatkan kemampuan literasi dan numerasi siswa di SD Negri 106446 Bintang Meriah. Partisipan penelitian ini adalah 11 siswa yang dipilih menggunakan purposive sampling. Program ini dilaksanakan selama 6 bulan. Data dikumpulkan melalui observasi, dokumentasi, pre-test, dan post-test dengan menggunakan tes literasi dan numerasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat peningkatan kemampuan literasi dan numerasi siswa yang signifikan setelah mengikuti program Kampus Mandiri Mengajar. Temuan menunjukkan bahwa program Kampus Mandiri Mengajar dapat menjadi strategi yang efektif untuk meningkatkan kemampuan literasi dan numerasi mahasiswa. Oleh karena itu, disarankan untuk menerapkan program ini di sekolah lain untuk meningkatkan prestasi akademik siswa. Kajian ini penting karena memberikan gambaran tentang efektifitas program Kampus Mengajar Merdeka dalam meningkatkan kemampuan literasi dan numerasi mahasiswa dalam konteks tertentu. Temuan penelitian ini dapat menginformasikan pengembangan program masa depan yang ditujukan untuk meningkatkan prestasi akademik di kalangan mahasiswa Indonesia.
