Abstract

AbstractEcology and ecosystem are two profound terminologies nowadays which seem to be a new conception. But if we look at it more closely, for our dependency on the environment we were actually born as part of an ecosystem. For Balinese Hindu community, efforts to save our environment and ecology are no longer seen as a mere conception, but have been part of daily life. Hindus principles, philosophies, Balinese traditional architectural principles, as well as awig-awig of a desa pekraman make it a compulsory for its members to always look after and live in harmony with nature. The luring tourist industry in the crowding visit of both local and international tourists to Bali has overlooked cultural legacies of our ancestors. This can be seen by rampant exploitation activities as well as conversion of land use. In one hand, spatial plan is overlooked, and money is preserved on the other. Kota-desa pattern which are all derived from cosmological and communal values, are marginalized. In consequence, the urban architecture losses its character and its identity. All are done on behalf of growth (mainly of the tourist development).Ecologically friendly development concept emerges by combining technical and community paradigms. This merger results in a technico-community development approach that promotes public participation at all levels, starting from planning phase, execution and monitoring phases. Technical paradigm is required in predicting needs imposed by both nature and Balinese community, in rational, objective, accurate, and free of interest manners. Conflicts pertaining to the adat, socio-culture, beliefs system, religion, and psychology that costThe emergence of both paradigms is expected to maintain a balance in an ecosystem. Development of both urban and rural areas should have considered local genius. This also means that identity of Bali’s urban and rural areas should be developed based on values and approaches exist at various desa pekraman of this island.

Abstract

Village-based tourism has finally reached Jullah, a Bali Aga Village in Tejakula District of Buleleng Regency. While the main goal of the introduction of this industry is to boost economic growth, it has also transformed the architecture of the village, either as a whole or partially. This research aims to study transformation of the architecture of Julah settlement as well as the so called umah tua (original home) of this village. It employed qualitative research method focusing on the use of a thorough physical observation for data collection. Study shows four fundamental results. First, the whole linear pattern of Julah settlement remains intact. The north (associated to the mountain - utama) is the devoted for gods related uses, and the south (associated to the sea - nista) is dedicated for uses pertained to disposals. Second, main elements of an umah tua, such as angkul-angkul (gate), paon (kitchen), sanggah kemulan (family shrine), and bale sakanem (six pillar building) or bale sakaroras (12 pillar building) are maintained. Third, many umah tua have had contemporary buildings constructed within to accommodate additional occupants. Fourth, umah tua proudly continues to implement traditional scales and dimensions, structural system, construction details, and decorative elements. They however cannot resist in using modern building materials, especially those accommodated to cover walls, floors, and roofs. This latter development has, in consequence, brought about changes in color and textures of Julah original homes. Keywords: umah tua, transformation, settlement pattern, home elements

Abstract

Nusa Penida is one of the islands in Klungkung Regency, Bali, which is currently growing rapidly. This can be seen from the increasing number of tourists every year. Based on the data of the number of people who visited Nusa Penida, it could be seen to have an increase in the need to provide adequate facilities of the port. Banjar Nyuh Port is one of the ports in Nusa Penida which currently needs to be redesigned in order to facilitate sea transportation activities. Re-design is a process of replanning a facility in an effort to improve the functions that are contained and create better conditions than before. The Redesign of the Banjar Nyuh Port aim to optimize the port function through solving the problems encountered using innovative thinking in redesigning. In the process of redesign based on a theme as the basis, the theme used must be in accordance with the context of the problems, location, culture and social of the local community so that the appropriate theme is to apply the Neo Vernacular Architecture theme to the design. The applica-tion of Neo Vernacular Theme can display the traditional impression of Balinese Architecture combined with the value of modern architecture so as to create a design that contains cultural traditions and design innovation in it. Index Terms— redesign, port, neo vernacular, nusa penida.

Abstract

The city of Mojokerto still has buildings that use elements of its local architecture. In the city which is also called the c ity of Majapahit, historical heritage influences contemporary architecture. Many public and commercial facility buildings use local elements, both in the appearance of buildings, zoning, and ornaments. The aim is to provide identity to the building. One of the efforts of the city government that has not yet been compiled is to rearrange the area or building area in terms of its revitalization. One of them is the Prapanca Market or also called the Flea Market. Commodities offered by this mar- ket are used goods that are not suitable to be returned to the market as a whole. The purpose of this design is to in- crease the vitality of this market through the use of local elements in the appearance of buildings. Revitalization is done by developing functions, zoning, and facilities. Local architectural elements are applied to the roof and body of the build- ing, as well as the entrance. Index Terms— revitalization, local architecture, building facades, markets, mojokerto.

Abstract

The transportation system is experiencing rapid development. One of the transportation systems that has developed qiote rapidly and is in great demand now is the air transportation system. The air transportation system is the main choice because air transportation can save the travel time when the distance is far enough. Development of time and technology, the increasing demand for air transportation has caused a lack of capacity at Bali’s airport. It is necessary to design a facility that can provide a place for air accommodation to accommodate the needs of air transportation users. Circulation is one thing that must be considered when designing an airport passenger terminal. Circulation are usually formed from a pattern of spatial structure so the circulation in the building will determine the smooth activity in the build- ing. Index Terms— transportation, circulation, terminal.

Abstract

This research is a response to the regional regulations high intensity violations phenomenon in governing the green open space in Denpasar City. The emergence of this phenomenon as a consequence of a regional regulation core, which is policy taken by the government as a result of synergy, compromise or even competition -in this research called as conflict- between ideas, theories, ideologies and interests. These various interests are the research’s main focus to aim the conflict of interest better understanding in open planning green space of Denpasar City, as part of public policy oriented to the relationship of the planning and development systems of the city. This research is designed using qualitative approach with interpretive method. Problems are examined through three elements of research, namely: (1) green open space in the context of spatial planning and formation; (2) interests involved in green open space planning; and (3) the influence of various interests on the existence of green open space. The findings of the study are that in the context of regional spatial planning, the emergence of violations phenomenon of regional regulations regarding green open spaces in the Denpasar City occurs because of three main conflicts, based on: (1) economic conflict; (2) political conflict; and (3) cultural conflicts. These three main conflicts then trigger the emergence of land use conflicts that threaten the existence of green open spaces in Denpasar City.

Abstract

This article raises a query in regard to the suitability of the 'studio' as a learning method in the field of architecture. Its existence is inspired by the central position of the studio in the curriculum for building design. The studio-based course absorbs a relatively more significant portion of resources, time, and energy compared to others which play a supporting or enriching role. This article applies an inductive approach and explorative method in both data collection and analysis. By considering the various components of influence in architectural learning – aspects of pedagogy, cultural diversification, social interests, and advances in science and technology –, the discussion and results of the study are described in three sub-topics. First is an exploration of a studio design-based education and its roles in learning. Second, it is a study of adapted learning methods that are initiated and implemented by various academic institutions in the same field. And third, it is an extraction of relevant learning methods for future education in the field of architecture.
