Abstract

Jalan Pahlawan is the main road of Tabanan City, the center for government offices of Tabanan Regency in Bali. This road used to be dominated by buildings dedicated to offices. Over time, however, this is no longer the case. It has been decorated with other building types that eventually change its visual character. This study aims to analyze the visual character of 2 segments of the Jalan Pahlawan corridor. The study uses a qualitative descriptive method by applying the townscape theory, namely serial vision (place and content). The study limits its research by only investigating the first layer of buildings that exist on both sides of the Jalan Pahlawan. This study shows that 3 segments have focal points while the other segment does not. This is due to the low visual diversity created by building sited in this corridor. The largest viscosity is found in the Tabanan Regent's Office which has a 35-meter border of undeveloped area. Sidewalks for pedestrians are found on both the northern and southern parts of the corridor which are also well decorated by thick vegetation. Vegetation is important in creating shade, but it should be wisely selected so it will not omit visual character potentially created by a series of unique buildings that exist along the corridor.

Abstract

As part of the built environment, human settlements are not singularly about physical forms. They also offer a much deeper denotation to non-physical elements. Physical formations often deliver messages reflecting values and meanings that are invisible, but well imbedded within. Taking these circumstances as its context of study, this paper concentrates on how social systems are represented in the spatial settings of a human settlement and its built forms. It chooses Trunyan Village as its case study. This is one among many Bali Aga settlements found in Bali Island, which is located on the shore of Lake Batur. As the case of other Bali Aga communities, Trunyan offers a pre-Majapahit civilization. Using qualitative approaches, this study reveals that the overall physical layout of this settlement is governed by a concept of luan-teben (upstream-downstream) and a specific concept of north, east, south, and west that has no bearing to cardinal compass points. North-south orientation is held in a more prominent manner than that of east-west. They believe that north (hulu/luan) is where the mountain stands (referred to Abang Mountain which stands on the eastern side of this village. South direction (teben) is where water lays (referred to Lake Batur, which lays to the west side of Trunyan). Spatial formation of homes within this settlement is an expression of a virilocal kinship, in which marriages between members of a clan (dadia) is a must. Homes of families that belong to one dadia will be placed in a tight zone. They therefore live in a close distance from one family to another. Further spatial arrangements of the whole settlement are explained in the text. Keywords: representation, settlement, community social system, Trunyan Village Bangli

Abstract

Osing Community of Kemiren Village, Gelagah District, Banyuwangi is an ethnic group of Java Island in Indonesia that still maintains and preserves its culture, especially of that pertains to its home. Osing’s traditional house has a unique concept that is different in comparison with traditional Javanese houses in general. This includes uniqueness in building orientation, spatial pattern, architectural forms, and the use of building materials. The purpose of this study is to conceptualize the architecture of Osing’s traditional house in terms of spatial patterns, forms, functions, structure, and building materials. This research uses qualitative research with an ethnographic approach. Study findings show that Osing traditional house is passed down from generation to generation. Its spatial layout has a cosmological orientation that rules a home should conform with a north-south axis forming a linear pattern and should not face a mountain. Home has 3 rooms, namely bale, jrumah, and pawon laid in a parallel and symmetrical spatial pattern. In this arrangement, jrumah is considered the center of the house as well as a private zone. In addition to this, a home is a representation of a binary concept - dark-light, male-female, public-private, left-right, and sacred-profane. Osing’s traditional house uses building materials that are locally available and adequately support its structure. The main considerations applied in selecting these materials are comfort and capacity to adapt to the surrounding environment.

Abstract

Denpasar has a variety of heritage assets that are still used by the people. Living Culture or intangible cultural heritage refers to the practices, representations, expressions, knowledge, and skills owned by the local community. Globalization and information technology are factors that influence people to change and reinterpret their traditions that have been carried out for generations. This paper aims to explore the role and rights of the community in safeguarding their architecture and the built environment. From this study can be concluded that the changes made to the architecture and built environment are mostly carried out by following the current trends as a representation of the economic capacity of the owner and sometimes ignoring the rules and knowledge/tatwa and norm/susila that were previously used by the community for the spatial arrangement of their environment. In the past, knowledge was possessed by Brahmins in the power of the king, and the people only carry out traditions with little knowledge of the meaning contained in it. The knowledge stored in artifacts needs to be socialized or published so the changes made are still rooted in the local cultural character and can maintain the identity of the city of Denpasar.

Abstract

Abstract The Tabanan District Spatial Plan 2012-2032 states that Pandak Gede Village has a role as an environmental center that functions as the center of a residential area that serves the surrounding rural areas. The increase in population in Pandak Gede Village has caused changes in the number and distribution of settlement areas. The reduced area of agricultural land can be an indication of the conversion of agricultural land to non-agricultural land. Given these indications, research is needed to find out how the conditions of land use change in Pandak Gede Village are seen from the social, economic, cultural aspects. Are there developments that are not in accordance with the Spatial Plan for Tabanan Regency 2012-2032, is there any indication of the conversion of agricultural land in Pandak Gede Village and how alternative strategies can be taken to minimize the mismatch of regional development against the Tabanan District Spatial Plan 2012-2032. The method used in this research is the mix method. The analysis included: socioeconomic analysis, socio-cultural analysis, regional development analysis, land use suitability analysis, and analysis of agricultural land use control strategies. The results showed an indication of the conversion of agricultural land by 18.71 hectares into residential and non-agricultural land. Alternative strategies that can be done are facilitative, reeducative, persuasive and power strategies to the government, to Pandak Gede Village, to community owners and buyers of land, to environmentalists, to further research and education.
