Abstract

Language as a means of communication always develops overtime. The value of politeness implied in the language. Furthermore, in interpreting the politeness value of a language, situational context has strong function to be considered. This cannot be separated from the speakers’ ways to express language with the politeness standard so that impact the listener's tendency to interpret the politeness value without seeing the situation affects it. The research purpose is to find out the types of politeness strategies and situational context that affects it in directive speech act in the Greatest Showman movie script. The researcher use qualitative method. The result was the five politeness strategies namely bald on record 42 data (29 %), positive politeness 61 (42 %), negative politeness 34 data (23 %), and bald off record 8 (6 %) where in each of these politeness strategies the component of speech appears as a situational context that influences. Additionally, the result show that the movie illustrates The Greatest showman movie as a motivational contains more positive politeness strategy which relates to the movie background that occurred in 19th century society, it is still valuable to uphold family values and respect for others according to their social class.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the types, social function, and the construction of speaker’s identity in code switching. This research used mixed (qualitative and quantitative) method by transcribing and analysing the videos to find out the types, social functions, and identity in code switching. The data were utterances uttered by participants in Indonesia’s Next Top Model cycle 2. The result of the study showed there were three types of code switching, intra-sentential switching, inter-sentential switching, and tag switching. The most dominant type was intra-sentential switching with 192 utterances, 41 utterances are inter-sentential switching, and 19 utterances for tag switching. Then five function of code switching found in this research, referential function with 3 utterances, directive function with 15 utterances, expressive function with 37 utterances, phatic function with 13 utterances, and metalinguistic function which most dominant function used by the speaker with 184 utterances. The construction of identity were divided into four categories, classification with 4 occurrences, relational identification with 15 occurrences, physical identification with 8 occurrences, and functionalization with 34 occurrences.

Abstract

Language contact is the phenomenon of using two or more languages at the same time and place. The purpose of using two or more languages in communication is to build good communication based on social factors. Language contact caused various linguistic phenomena, such as bilingualism, multilingualism, diglossia, code-switching, code-mixing, and language shift. This research is about code-switching. This research aims to identify the types, reasons, and errors made by Jerome Polin when he did code-switching. The theories used in this research are by Bloom and Gumperz (1972) about types of code-switching, Hoffman (1991) about reasons why people did code-switching, and surface strategy taxonomy by Dulay et al (1982) about types of error. This research was descriptive research with a qualitative approach to solving research problems. The data was taken from the Nihonggo Mantappu youtube video, and in the form of utterances. The results of this research show there are five types of code-switching used by Jerome Polin caused by various reasons. In addition, it was also found that there were errors made even though he had mastered a language.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the effect of using Youtube towards EFL students’ speaking skill for senior high school in Indonesia. The writer focuses on using meta-analysis method, in which to get a general conclusion from secondary data. By searching from Google Scholar and Sinta, fourteen data are found in the form of articles, journals and thesis. The data collected as samples are based on keywords indonesian high school students with tenth and eleventh grades as samples. The research uses JASP in order to analyze the data. Then, the findings from the analysis reveals that the effect size of using Youtube towards students’ speaking skill for grade tenth is high (RE model=1,49) and medium effect (RE model=0,64) for grade eleventh. Moreover, Youtube significantly and positively affects the students’s speaking skill for both grade tenth and eleventh.

Abstract

Historical novel translation requires an advanced competence of translator in relation with the translation quality: how accurate, clear, and readable the translator tries to deliver the writer’s original message to his/her translation version for the readers. The more accurate, clear, and readable the translator’s version is, the easier comprehension of the text will be. This paper was an outline of descriptive research which has been conducted to analyze the translation quality assessment in translating historical romance novel Taj: A Story of Mughal India into Taj: Tragedi Di Balik Tanda Cinta Abadi by Maria M. Lubis. There were three variables factors used; the two novels as objective factor, the translator as genetic factor, and the raters as affective factor to analyze, compare, rate, and score the translation quality. The sentences, clauses, phrases that consisted Indian cultural terms from the two novels were chosen as the data. From the analysis, it was found that the translation quality of this translated novel is accurate, high clear, and high readable obviously effected by an eligible translator who has high level competence and performance in translating the novel.Keywords: translation, historical romance novel, accuracy, clarity, and readability. KEAKURATAN, KEJELASAN, DAN KETERBACAAN DALAM PENERJEMAHAN NOVEL CINTA BERLATAR SEJARAHAbstractPenerjemahan novel berlatar sejarah membutuhkan penerjemah yang kompeten jika dilihat dari segi penilalian kualitas terjemahan seperti keakuratan, kejelasan, dan keterbacaan. Semakin akurat, jelas, dan terbaca suatu produk terjemahan, hasil terjemahan semakin akan mudah dipahami. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian deskriptif yang mengidentifikasi dan menggambarkan penilaian kualitas penerjemahan. Seberapa akurat, jelas, dan terbaca novel terjemahan Taj: A Story of Mughal India menjadi Taj: Tragedi Di Balik Tanda Cinta Abadi oleh Maria M. Lubis. Ada tiga faktor variabel yang digunakan; kedua novel sebagai faktor objektif, penerjemah sebagai faktor genetik, dan tim penilai sebagai faktor afektif untuk menganalisis, membandingkan, menilai, dan memberi angka kualitas terjemahan. Kalimat, klausa, ungkapan-ungkapan yang terdiri dari istilah budaya India dari kedua novel dipilih sebagai data. Dari analisis tersebut, ditemukan bahwa kualitas terjemahan novel yang diterjemahkan ini akurat, sangat jelas, dan mudah dibaca, yang dipengaruhi oleh kepakaran dan kompetensi kinerja dalam menerjemahkan novel tersebut. Kata kunci: penerjemahan, novel cinta sejarah, keakuratan, kejelasan, dan keterbacaan.

Abstract

This paper is a one-shot case study which aims to reveal if the integration of anti-drug character education into foreign language writing classes by using short movie is effective to achieve both the learning and character education objectives. An online writing test and a four-Likert scale questionnaire with twenty close-ended questions were given to 32 English college students in West Sumatra. The data of students’ writing were analyzed quantitatively by using Wilcoxon Match Pair Test, while that of the questionnaire was analyzed by using Mann Whitney U Test. The analysis outputs show the success of the integration by the following results: (1) there is a significant improvement in word production number (Asymp. Sign (2-tailed)=0.000); (2) there is a significant improvement in writing score (Asymp. Sign (2-tailed)=0.000); and (3) the students’ understanding towards the moral values sent by the movie are excellent (M=3.92). The findings may have pedagogical implications in adding an effective media reference to improve students’ writing skill and to integrate character education into EFL learning.

Abstract

This study is an analysis of slang words found in the dialogues of the Furious 7 movie. This study aims to determine the types of word formation and the function of the slang words used in the Furious 7 movie. The theory used in this research is Yule (2010) regarding the types of word formation and Allan & Burridge's (2006) about the function of slang. This research is a descriptive research with a qualitative approach to solving research problems. The data used is taken from dialogues between characters in the Furious 7 movie. Researcher found 37 slang words used by the characters in the movie. This study reveals that there are seven types of word formation and seven different functions in the use of slang words The most dominant types of word formation are borrowing and multiple processes with 8 data each, while the most dominant slang function is to initiate relax conversation with 10 data.

Abstract

Contextual meaning is meaning that refers to context, or a sentence that can support the clarity of a meaning. This research was conducted to find the types of contextual meaning and changes in meaning in Olivia Rodridgo's songs entitled "drivers license", "deja vu", "good 4 u", "happier" and "traitor". This research used contextual meaning theory by from Pateda (2010) and semantic change theory by Chaer (2013). The method of this research was descriptive qualitative. The results showed that there were five out of 10 types of contextual meaning in the five songs, which context of person, context of situation, context of whether or not a formal conversation, context of speaker’s mood or listener’s mood and context of object with a total of 27 result, which contain nine words and 18 phrases. Also, three out of five types of meaning changes were found in words and phrases containing contextual meaning, which are widening, totally changed, and dysphemism with a total data of 17 out of 27 data, which contain of nine words and eight phrases. This research found that words or phrases that cannot be interpreted just by looking at the definitions in the dictionary, but also must be understood the context of their use.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze and compare the Textual Metafunction in Surah Maryam and The Gospel of Luke. The texts were analyzed using Halliday and Matthiesen’s type of Themes theory and Danes’ thematic progression theory. There are three types of themes, namely topical, interpersonal, and textual themes. Also, there are three types of thematic progression, which are simple linear, constant continuous, and derived hyper-theme progression. While the data from this research is in the form of text. This study focused on comparing the theme types and thematic progression found in both texts. In analysis, both of the texts are mostly using an unmarked topical theme which aims to make the information conveyed in the text clear and easily understood by the reader. For the thematic progression, both of the texts also mainly use derived hyper-theme progression which focuses on a single Theme.

Abstract

This research was aimed to know the functions of code-switching in the classroom practised by female and male lecturers and investigated gender differences between female and male lecturers in the use of code-switching in the classroom. The researcher observed the classroom using audio recorder. Then, the data was analysed using mixed method research to measure the frequency of code-switching used by female and male lecturers in the classroom. The research subjects in this study were English education lecturers at Universitas Negeri Padang. Two female lecturers and two male lecturers.
