Abstract

Technology has a crucial role in helping students improve their English skills. One of the devices that help them improve their English skills particularly vocabulary is Smartphone with some applications. One of the applications is BBC Learning English. The aim of this study is to explore the use of BBC Learning English application in students’ vocabulary mastery. This is a qualitative study with case study particularly the phenomenological study. The participants of this study were 26 students of Bhayangkara Jakarta Raya University majoring Accounting in the 4th Semester. The data were collected through questionnaire. The results of the study were that students got 10 new vocabularies for each meeting. 23 students could memorize English vocabularies easily. 21 Students had their spirit increased. 17 students agreed about the number of benefits that they got.16 students agreed that the contents in the application varied.21 studentsliked BBC Learning English application.8 students disagreed and 8 students strongly disagreed about no advantages of the application. 12 students agreed, 7 students disagreed about memorizing vocabularies without using the application.10 students disagreed about being nervous using the application.22 students liked the topics in the application. 21 students agreed that videos in the application helped students memorize vocabularies. 21 studentshad mobile phone-based Android.21 students agreed that the application was very flexible to use.20 students agreed that the application was friendly to use.22 students got fun experience using the application. 21 students were proud of using the application. 21 students agreed that the contents are interesting. 21 students would recommend the application. 20 students could use the application easily. 13 students agreed that mastering vocabularies is important. 17 students had the target to master English vocabularies.

Abstract

This research was conducted to measure whether there is a correlation between learning motivation and reading comprehension achievement. The population of this research is the first-grade students of SMAN 8 Bekasi that consists of 99 students and was divided into three classes. The total samples are 40 students taken from the entire population by simple random sampling. The method was used in this research is a survey. It means quantitative analysis by using a questionnaire to a lot of objects. In his study, the writer gave questionnaires that consist of forty questions to know their learning motivation. And then, the writer gave multiple-choice tests to know reading comprehension achievement. The result of the calculation of correlation coefficient Phi with 5% level of significant from the degree of freedom (df) = N is 3, 841 and the interpretation of the score 2 count  and  2 table  indicated that  2 count (32, 727) >  2 table (3,841). Based on the result above, the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected, and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. There is a correlation between learning motivation and reading comprehension achievement among the X grade students of SMAN 8 Bekasi.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to know the kinds of figurative language used in selected lyrics of Coldplay song. This research was designed to identify some figurative language by understanding the general meaning when they are used in the lyrics of songs. The technique of descriptive analysis offered to analyze data by reading the data, then identifying the figurative language used in the lyrics of the song. After identifying some figurative languages then they are categorized into some kinds of figurative languages. Then, the general meaning of figurative language by identifying the lexical meaning and contextual meaning of the four selected lyrics of the song are used to analyze the data got from the song. Based on research findings, some figurative languages were found in Coldplay’s selected songs. Most of the figurative language which is used in the lyrics of Coldplay’s selected songs is “Hyperbole” which has a great exaggeration used to emphasize a point, and used for expressive or comic effect. The meanings which were found from the song are classified into connotative meanings. The lyrics of Coldplay’s selected songs tell us about humanity’s social life which contains love, sadness, happiness, spirit and others. In the lyrics of Coldplay’s selected songs, figurative languages are helpful to understand the song. The existence of figurative language is not to complicate the understanding of lyrics but to simplify and clear the understanding of lyrics. The song is very suitable for English Learners who want to improve their English skills in analyzing lyrics that contain figurative language. From the explanation above can be concluded that in analyzing lyrics besides finding figurative language in lyrics, the meanings of the song that contain figurative languages and messages of the song can be understood.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to find out the students’ perception on the use of Cake application to improve speaking skill. The subjects of this research were 12 industrial engineering students of Universitas Bhayangkara Jakarta Raya in the fifth semester. The researchers applied the descriptive qualitative method on this research. The data were gathered through questionnaire and interview. Based on the result of the study, most students agreed that Cake application gave them more chances to improve their speaking skill, they were interested in improving speaking skill independently through Cake application, they were able to practice speaking using Cake application as many times as they wanted, they enjoyed choosing materials on Cake application in improving speaking skill, Using Cake application independently enhanced the confidence to practice speaking skill, using Cake application enabled them to control their own learning, using Cake application in their own time made English language learning more interesting, Cake application could help them solve their problem in improving speaking skill, the practice in Cake application gave them more motivation in improving speaking skill, Cake application was easy to use in improving speaking skill. Four selected students were interviewed about the use of Cake application to improve speaking skill, most of them knew some features of Cake application and understood how to utilize the application. Finally, they would recommend the application to the other students for improving speaking skill.Keywords: perception, cake application, speaking skill

Abstract

Pesatnya kemajuan dunia di bidang Teknologi Informasi (IT) terus berkembang seiring dengan berjalannya waktu. Seiring dengan berkembangnya teknologi dan  ilmu pengetahuan, saat ini media pembelajaran yang sering digunakan adalah media pembelajaran berbasis komputer. Terdapat istilah baru dari kemunculan perkembangan tersebut yaitu media berbasis komputer, yaitu multimedia pembelajaran interaktif. Interaktif berarti terdapat hubungan timbal balik antara media dan pengguna media. Permasalahan yang dihadapi oleh mitra adalah minimnya pengetahuan para guru dalam menciptakan atau mengembangkan media pembelajaran. Hal yang dikeluhkan oleh para guru yaitu keterbatasan media pembelajaran yang mengakibatkan guru cenderung melaksanakan pembelajaran di kelas dengan cara konvensional dan seringnya tanpa media. Oleh karena itu, tim pelaksana mencoba untuk memberikan pelatihan pembuatan Media Ajar Digital sebagai media pembelajaran bahasa Inggris, bahasa Indonesia, Matematika, dan IPA. Bagi guru SDN Muktiwari 01, dengan adanya pelatihan ini diharapkan para guru dapat menguasai pembuatan Media Ajar Digital dan pengisian konten yang positif terkait dengan pendidikan sehingga Media Ajar Digital dapat dibentuk sebagai media untuk aktualisasi diri. Pelaksanaan pengabdian kepada masyarakat dilaksanakan dalam bentuk sosialisasi, Pengenalan, pelatihan, dan praktik penerapan Media Ajar dalam Pengajaran Berbasis Digital kepada guru-guru di SDN Muktiwari 01. Berdasarkan dari hasil pengabdian kepada masyarakat, para guru sangat antusias dalam mengikuti kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat. Para guru sangat senang dengan hasil yang sudah dilaksanakan karena mereka langsung mempraktikkan teori yang sudah disampaikan di hari sebelumnya.

Abstract

In social situations, people must be able to recognize the faces of others to respond to emotions and maintain relationships. People are supposed to utilize politeness strategies to save their faces. The purpose of this research is to explain the different functions and kinds of politeness strategies utilized by Kit Connor in the television show The Heart Stopper. This study falls under discourse analysis and employs Brown and Levinson's theory of politeness strategies. In the form of utterances and words, this data is the script for the television series The Heart Stopper. According to our findings, Kit Connor's politeness strategy is used in 37 utterances. She used the baldness strategy 18.9% or 7 times of the time, positive politeness 54% or 20 times of the time, negative politeness 24.4% or 9 times of the time, and informally used 24.4% or 1 time of the time.2.7% used. Kit Connor's favourite politeness strategy is the "offer and promise" part of the positive politeness strategy. The strategy is employed 18.9%, or 7 times of the time. Generally, he employs politeness strategies in his daily life to maintain and build positive relationships with others

Abstract

Students should be able to master four skills in English. They may find it challenging to learn certain skills, particularly speaking. They are hesitant to improve their speaking skills since they do not receive assistance from the environment. The surroundings are not in English. The study aimed at finding out students’ perception of use of YouTube the Channel “lingua marina” in enhancing students’ performance of speaking. The subjects of this research were 10 psychology students of Universitas Bhayangkara Jakarta Raya in the fourth semester. The researchers applied the descriptive qualitative method to this study. The data were gathered through questionnaires and interviews. The data were interpreted in the words to show the results of questionnaire and interview. Based on the result of the study, most students agreed that YouTube videos help them increase new vocabulary, when they learn using YouTube videos they can improve their pronunciation, they can speak English fluently using YouTube videos, they shared “neutral” for a better understanding of the material when they watch YouTube videos, they also shared “neutral” that YouTube videos cannot make them bored when learning English, they enjoy practicing speaking English using YouTube videos, they agree that YouTube videos can be a motivational tool in learning to speak English, YouTube videos can help them use good pronunciation, they shared “neutral” that they can organize the ideas using YouTube videos, and they can better understand in guessing unfamiliar words using YouTube videos. Ten students were interviewed about the use of YouTube Videos to improve their speaking skill, and most of them could learn English easily using YouTube videos. They could increase their motivation. They could imitate foreigners speaking English repeatedly and fluently. Finally, they felt easy to memorize new vocabulary vocabularies. To sum up, students can be helped in enhancing their speaking skill by utilizing YouTube videos.

Abstract

The purpose of the research was to analyze the idiomatic translation found in “The Twilight Saga Breaking Dawn” By Stephanie Meyer. The result of the research is the idiomatic translations method which is found in the novel and analyzed by using the theory of translation from Newmark. Based on the data analysis, the writer found some proofs that the data which were translated used idiomatic translation method. In analyzing translation process, the writer compared with other translation methods. The purpose was that the writer showed the translation method used by the translator was idiomatic translation method. In translation, the translator paid attention to the meaning of source language so that the message in target language can be received by the readers.
