Abstract

This study is librarian analysis which collects the data from books and journal articles. Those articles and books chapters discuss about introductions in terms of their generic structures. The data collections were applied by reading, taking notes for their generic structures, and analyzing them in term of their generic structure models. Then, the data were reported using qualitative approach by describing their patterns. The results showed that there two big categories for their models, involving pattern models and free models. Pattern models dominated in this study because they have been applied seven experts, while free models have been applied by only two people. Therefore, this study suggests that if the journal, which you direct to publish your articles, doesn’t have pattern, you are recommended to apply the patterns as the following: CARS model from Swales, IPS model from Adnan (2011), Slatcher & Pennebaker, and Ball & Vincent.

Abstract

Abstract

Genre studies in English for specific purposes (ESP) have long been widely investigated, including in academic and professional texts. In professional texts, these studies have been conducted in business letters, formal letters, newsletters in China and Australia, advertising promotional media in Indonesia, and application letters. However, application letters are still the least investigated in the Indonesian context. Furthermore, contrastive genre analysis of English and Indonesian application letters has never been investigated to date. Based on finding and comprehending this gap in the literature, the researcher is encouraged and interested in conducting the present study. The researcher involved and trained 12 English foreign language (EFL) students to analyze rhetorical moves of 63 English and 63 Indonesian application letters. However, among the 63 English application letters, 25 were written by non-native English speakers. Thus, the researcher only focused on analyzing 38 English and 63 Indonesian application letters. Then, to ensure the validity of the analysis results, the researcher reanalyzed the rhetorical moves by re-reading application letters three times using a top-down approach and identifying their linguistic signals. The results showed two rhetorical models of English and Indonesian application letters. These two models imply that they have rhetorical differences in communicating their purposes.

Abstract

Pragmatic studies have been widely conducted, but speech acts on motivational speeches were rarely investigated. Moreover, functions of illocutionary speech acts are received very limited scholarly attention. These gaps have been encouraging the researchers to conduct the present to analyze speech acts contained in Oprah Winfrey’s motivational speeches with two purposes. First, it is to identify the forms of illocutionary speech acts in Oprah's motivational speech. Second, it also determines the function of illocutionary speech acts in Oprah's motivational speech. It employed a qualitative and quantitative method for the analysis. Then, in collecting data, it used note-taking as an instrument. In this regard, we watched and listened to five motivational videos of Oprah Winfrey’s speeches four times, and then took notes of any utterances containing forms and functions of illocutionary speech acts. Then, for analyzing data, we classified the forms of speech acts using a theory from Searle (1969) and functions of speech acts employing an analytical framework from Leech (1993). The results show various forms and functions in delivering a motivational speech. However, most speech acts in the videos tend to be assertive rather than the others, and concerning functions, they tend to be collaborative. The reason behind these dominances is discussed in this paper.

Abstract

Citation studies in research articles (RAs) have been widely conducted worldwide, but such studies rarely compared English and Indonesian RAs, especially within the history discipline. Therefore, the researchers intended to analyze and compare citations in English and Indonesian research article introductions (RAIs) in the history discipline using a genre approach for the analysis and a descriptive qualitative approach for the reports. In this regard, 30 RAIs from both data sets were analyzed using two different frameworks: one is to identify citation ways and, the other one is to analyze citation types. The results revealed that English and Indonesian authors tended to employ descriptions more than other techniques when citing sources. However, English authors employed this technique more than Indonesian authors. In addition, both English and Indonesian authors also used a non-integral type more frequently than the integral counterpart, but English authors employed this type more frequently than Indonesian authors. Thus, these results conclude that although both English and Indonesian authors tended to assimilate their citations and avoid integrating them, English authors still employed this citation technique and type more frequently than Indonesian authors.

Abstract

This study aims: 1) to reveal types of code mixing that appeared in the Bulan Terbelah di Langit Amerika 2 movie and 2) to find out factors that cause code mixing in this movie. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method. In collecting data, this research applied note-taking as an instrument. To obtain data, the dialogues of the characters were analyzed thoroughly. Researchers implemented the theory of code-mixing by Muysken (2000) to find the types and the view of code-mixing factors from Hoffman (1991) for the analysis. The research results revealed three types of code mixing contained in this movie. They are insertion type (7 data or 29.17%), alternation type (12 data or 50%), and congruent lexicalization type (5 data or 20.83%). In addition, factors of code-mixing are also found in this movie. They are the lexical needs factor (9 data or 37.5%), emphasize something factor (3 data or 12.5%), talking about a particular topic factor (5 data or 20.83%), repetition used for clarification factor (2 data or 16.64%), soften or strengthen request or command factor (2 data or 8.33%, and expressing group identity factor (1 data or 4.16%). The most common form of code-mixing in this film is alternation when one language is used to fill in for another's lexical gaps throughout a conversation. They spoke in turn, and researchers found that a single sentence may be expressed in two languages with vastly different grammatical structures.

Abstract

Since authors intend to publish their academic research in reputable journals, promoting their research significance is pivotal to convincing journal gatekeepers for accepting their research articles (RAs). However, studies on research promotion within RAs are still limited, and none has comparatively studied this essential issue in English RAs published in reputable international journals and Indonesian highly-accredited journals as data sets. Thus, comprehending this gap has encouraged me to conduct the present study, by analyzing how claiming centrality and research contribution are employed in both data sets. For the data analysis, I employed a top-down approach for analyzing both data sets and used combined qualitative and quantitative approaches for the analysis reports. Then, the analysis results revealed that while claiming centrality appeared in most of both data sets, presenting research contribution appeared only in a few RAs of both data sets. Then, authors tend to express these two communicative steps using simple sentences more than the other three sentence types, except those published in reputable international journals as they mostly employ complex sentences in expressing their research contribution. These findings imply that promoting research by stating that the current research topic is important for research is important in the data, but using claiming centrality is more dominant than presenting research contribution. These findings also indicate that promoting the significance of current research topics is very essential.

Abstract
