Abstract

This study aims to reveal the production of consonant sounds in children aged 6-9 years old whose first language is Indonesian and/or Gorontalo language, as well as to reveal the facts about the consonant sounds that can and cannot be produced by the children. This study applied qualitative method by collecting the data using audio and video recording to record the consonant sounds produced by the participants, and transcribing the sounds using IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet). The data of this study were taken from School-Age Children from six until nine years old, that consisted of five students from Ronal Hutagalung Learning Center. The data analysis was carried out through the stages of data reduction, data display, and the drawing and verifying conclusion. Furthermore, the classification of NAE Consonant Phonemes by Parker (1986) was used as the main theory in data analysis. The findings show that from five participants, three participants can produce 23 consonant sounds, and two participants can produce 24 consonant sounds. In addition, the results also show that the participants were mostly unable to produce consonants Voiceless Dental Fricative /θ/, Voiced Palatal Fricative /ʒ/, Voiced Palatal Glide /y/, Voiceless Palatal Fricative /ʃ/, and Voiced Dental Fricative /ð/, which means that most of the sounds that they cannot produce are the consonants that do not exist in their first language. The findings of this study are expected to be a reference in teaching English pronunciation to children, as well as overcoming the problems related to the consonant production in children. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengungkap produksi bunyi-bunyi konsonan pada anak usia 6-9 tahun yang bahasa pertamanya adalah bahasa Indonesia dan/atau bahasa Gorontalo, serta mengungkap fakta tentang bunyi konsonan yang dapat dan tidak dapat dihasilkan oleh anak pada usia tersebut. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan pengumpulan data menggunakan rekaman audio dan video untuk merekam bunyi konsonan yang dihasilkan oleh partisipan, dan mentranskripsi bunyi-bunyi tersebut dengan menggunakan IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet). Data penelitian ini diambil dari Anak Usia Sekolah dari usia enam sampai sembilan tahun, yang terdiri dari lima siswa dari Ronal Hutagalung Learning Center. Analisis data dilaksanakan melalui tahapan reduksi data, penyajian data, serta penarikan dan verifikasi kesimpulan. Selanjutnya, klasifikasi Fonem Konsonan NAE oleh Parker (1986) digunakan sebagai teori utama dalam analisis data. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa dari lima partisipan, tiga partisipan dapat menghasilkan 23 bunyi konsonan, dan dua partisipan dapat menghasilkan 24 bunyi konsonan. Selain itu, hasil penelitian juga menunjukkan bahwa sebagian besar partisipan tidak dapat memproduksi konsonan Voiceless Dental Fricative /θ/, Voiced Palatal Fricative /ʒ/, Voiced Palatal Glide /y/, Voiceless Palatal Fricative /ʃ/, and Voiced Dental Fricative /ð/, yang berarti bahwa sebagian besar bunyi yang tidak dapat mereka lafalkan adalah konsonan yang tidak ada dalam bahasa pertama mereka. Temuan penelitian ini diharapkan dapat menjadi acuan dalam mengajarkan pronunciation bahasa Inggris pada anak, serta mengatasi permasalahan terkait produksi bunyi-bunyi konsonan pada anak.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to identify the students’ grammar ability in writing recount text. The grammar is limited on the use of past tense, especially in using past verb. The Subjects of this research are the students in class X IPA 3 of SMA NEGERI 1 GORONTALO that consist of 20 students. The method of this research is qualitative method. The result of this research presents the students' correct verb in using past verb in recount text. As the result, the total of students’ correct verbs is 157 with percentage 61% and the total of students incorrect verbs are 101 with percentage 39%. Therefore, the percentage of students’ ability is 61% and can be classified into high level in intensity 61% - 80%. Hence, it is suggested that the school and teachers should provide the appropriate method or strategy which can support the learning process to improve students' motivation and interest in writing recount text.

Abstract

In writing, to produce well-structured and understandable sentences, students must have knowledge of one aspect of grammar, namely parallelism. However, in fact, many students do not understand the concept of parallelism so that they fail to apply it in writing. This study examines the common types of faulty parallel structure in students’ argumentative writing and investigates the factors which cause the fault. This is a qualitative study that collects the primary data from students’ argumentative writing in particular topics which demand them to present their arguments and to provide their position, reasons and evidence in their writing, and the secondary data from the interview. As a result, this study discovers that students commit the faults in different types of parallelism, and mostly take place in parallel structure with elements joined by conjunction, both coordinating and correlative conjunction. The result of the interview section shows that students make the faulty parallelism due to lack of knowledge, lack of attention, and lack of vocabulary. Thus, in order to reduce the faulty parallel structure, the specific materials about parallelism should be added in writing or grammar’s lesson plan.

Abstract

The use of language in political campaign speech is always interesting to be observed. It mostly contains language features which are intended to convince or persuade people to vote someone into power. Therefore, the language used in political speech has always attracted linguist’ attention to conduct the study of political discourse. This study is aimed to identify and analyze the lexical devices in political campaign speech delivered by the politicians in Gorontalo mayoral election 2018. The data of the lexical cohesive devices are analyzed based on the theory of lexical cohesion proposed by Halliday and Hasan in 1976. Halliday and Hasan have divided the lexical cohesion into two types; reiteration and collocation. Furthermore, the reiteration has four sub-types; repetition, synonym/near synonym, superordinate, and general word. The data identification reveals that the reiteration and the collocation are both found in the speeches. They are successfully used as the tools to deliver the speakers purposes and intentions. Hopefully, this study gives more knowledge and insight to others, especially to the language learners, about how the lexical devices are used in political speeches, and more importantly about how language plays its roles to make people get convinced and persuaded.

Abstract

Translation is the process of transferring information from one language to another. Due to the fact that it requires proficiency in two languages, EFL students often encounter problems and difficulties during the translation process. To elucidate that fact further, this study examined students problems translating cultural texts, both from Indonesian to English and vice versa. The research data were gathered from students translation documents and source language texts, as well as from a questionnaire, in order to delve deeper into the problems students face when translating written text. The data analysis process was carried out through three stages as suggested by Miles & Huberman (1994, p: 10); reducing the data, explaining the data, and taking a conclusion. Reducing data is a process of selecting, focusing, simplifying and abstracting the data. Explaining the data is a process of organizing information and arranging the complete narration. Taking a conclusion is the process of drawing conclusions from the data. The main theory used in the process of collecting and analyzing data is the theory of translation problems proposed Alan Duff (1989) which consists of the problems of pragmatic, cultural, linguistic, and text-specific. The research result reveals some problems that the majority of students have in translating the texts, either from Indonesian into English or English into the Indonesian language. In translating the text of Indonesian into English, most of the students have problems with pragmatic aspects, in which they get difficulty finding and determining which equivalents correspond to the context of the source text. They, moreover, have problem in linguistics, such as the problems of grammar, syntax, and semantics. While in translating the text of English into Indonesian, most of them encounter the problems of pragmatics and semantics. The outcome of this study is expected to provide students with information on how to avoid and overcome difficulties encountered while translating texts, particularly those related to culture, and to serve as a guide for lecturers in developing syllabi and planning learning activities for translation courses. Penerjemahan adalah proses mentransfer informasi dari satu bahasa ke bahasa lain. Karena membutuhkan kemahiran dalam dua bahasa, mahasiswa masih sering mengalami masalah dan kesulitan dalam proses penerjemahan. Untuk mengungkap fakta tersebut, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengeksplorasi permasalahan mahasiswa dalam menerjemahkan teks tulis, baik dari bahasa Indonesia ke bahasa Inggris, maupun dari bahasa Inggris ke bahasa Indonesia. Data penelitian diperoleh melalui dokumen terjemahan siswa dan teks bahasa sumber, serta angket untuk menggali lebih dalam permasalahan yang dihadapi siswa dalam menerjemahkan teks tulis. Proses analisis data dilaksanakan melalui tiga tahapan sebagaimana dikemukakan oleh Miles & Huberman (1994, p:10): (1) mereduksi data, (2) menjelaskan data, dan (3) menyimpulkan. Reduksi data adalah proses memilih, memfokuskan, menyederhanakan, dan mengabstraksi data. Menjelaskan data adalah proses mengorganisasikan informasi dan menarasikan secara utuh. Mengambil kesimpulan adalah proses menarik kesimpulan dari data. Teori utama yang digunakan dalam proses pengumpulan dan analisis data adalah teori tentang masalah penerjemahan dari Alan Duff (1989) yang terdiri dari masalah pragmatik, budaya, linguistik, dan text-specific. Hasil penelitian mengungkapkan beberapa permasalahan yang dihadapi sebagian besar mahasiswa dalam menerjemahkan teks, baik dari bahasa Indonesia ke bahasa Inggris atau bahasa Inggris ke bahasa Indonesia. Dalam menerjemahkan teks bahasa Indonesia ke bahasa Inggris, sebagian besar mahasiswa mengalami masalah pragmatik, di mana mereka mengalami kesulitan untuk menemukan dan menentukan padanan kata yang paling sesuai dengan konteks bahasa sasaran. Selain itu, mereka juga menghadapi masalah linguistik, seperti masalah tata bahasa, sintaksis, dan semantik. Sedangkan dalam menerjemahkan teks bahasa Inggris ke bahasa Indonesia, sebagian besar mengalami masalah pragmatik dan semantik. Hasil penelitian ini diharapkan dapat memberikan informasi bagi mahasiswa untuk menghindari dan mengatasi permasalahan yang mungkin dihadapi dalam proses penerjemahan teks, serta dapat menjadi pedoman bagi dosen dalam merancang silabus dan merencanakan kegiatan pembelajaran mata kuliah penerjemahan.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis kebutuhan belajar bahasa Inggris pada mahasiswa di lima program studi yang ada di Fakultas Teknik Universitas Negeri Gorontalo, yaitu Prodi Elektro, Arsitektur, Sipil, Industri, dan Informatika. Pengumpulan data dilaksanakan melalui pemberian angket kepada mahasiswa Fakultas Teknik sebagai responden penelitian untuk mengidentifikasi apa saja kebutuhan dan harapan mahasiswa ketika belajar Bahasa Inggris di prodi mereka. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa mahasiswa di fakultas teknik memiliki kebutuhan belajar Bahasa Inggris yang dititikberatkan pada peningkatan empat keterampilan bahasa, yaitu berbicara, menulis, mendengar, dan membaca. Hasil persentase dalam angket menunjukkan sebanyak 95% mahasiwa setuju bahwa keterampilan mendengar, berbicara, dan membaca sangat dibutuhkan dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris, sedangkan keterampilan menulis memperoleh persentase sebanyak 90%. Selain itu, mahasiswa juga memiliki harapan untuk dapat lebih banyak belajar kosakata bahasa Inggris yang berhubungan dengan program studi mereka, karena kosakata tersebut sangat membantu mereka dalam proses pembelajaran pada mata kuliah yang ada di prodi mereka. Hasil penelitian ini diharapkan dapat menjadi acuan bagi dosen pengajar dalam menyusun silabus dan bahan ajar mata kuliah bahasa Inggris di prodi yang ada di Fakultas Teknik UNG.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to elucidate students' perspectives on grammar teaching methods. It observed 5th-semester students from the 2019 academic year, in English Language Education Study Program. Five students were chosen at random from each class, so the total sample for this study was 25. The descriptive quantitative research method was applied to this study. The information was gathered using a questionnaire that represented two grammar teaching methods: explicit and implicit. Each one consists of six statements, with several options for students to choose from, including strongly agree, agree, neutral, disagree, and strongly disagree. The findings revealed that each student has a different perspective on what method is required. The questionnaire results showed that approximately 80% of students agreed with every statement in the explicit method, and the majority of them chose neutral to the statements in the implicit method, with an average percentage of 37%-70%. As a result, students can be taught using both implicit and explicit methods, as both have advantages, and it is determined by the needs of each student.

Abstract

The importance of the existence of UMKM is able to support the surrounding economy and be able to revive other supporting local businesses. This community service aims to: 1) There is a need for community provision and understanding of the concept of digital-based marketing as a support for business activities in the village, 2) Facilitate access to village sales and production processes so that community businesses can run smoothly, 3) There is a need for bilingual digital eduliteration to the community as an effort in marketing in the village. This community service includes five stages including the preparation stage, the implementation stage, program preparation, program implementation, and reporting. At the preparatory stage, the team conducted a location survey and recruited participants for the service, and at the implementation stage there were several stages carried out by the team including: problem identification and needs analysis. The results of program implementation showed that the results of an internal meeting held by Ilomata KKNT students and the head of Ilomata Village had concluded several problems that would become priority work for students in Ilomata Village, including: 1) the problem of stunting; 2) Identity of UMKM in Ilomata Village; 3) Awareness of loose animal breeders. Each of these problems has been carried out by UNG KKNT students well through the stages of socialization and counseling, labeling of UMKM identities, as well as installing billboards related to regulations for loose animal breeders. The conclusion from this implementation is that every activity carried out is inseparable from the role of the Ilomata community, village government, and Bilato sub-district government in solving every problem faced by Ilomata village.

Abstract

Kegiatan pengabdian pada masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk membantu memaksimalkan pembelajaran bahasa Inggris bagi anak-anak usia sekolah dasar di Rumah Belajar dan bermain, sekaligus mengenalkan bahasa Inggris bagi mereka yang belum pernah mempelajarinya. Kegiatan ini difokuskan pada pembelajaran dan pelatihan berbicara bahasa Inggris dengan menggunakan metode Role play. Target yang ingin dicapai adalah terciptanya kegiatan belajar bahasa Inggris yang menyenangkan dan meningkatnya kemampuan berbicara bahasa Inggris para peserta pelatihan. Hasil dari pelaksanaaan kegiatan pengabdian menunjukkan bahwa metode role play efektif dalam meningkatkan motivasi peserta pelatihan untuk belajar bahasa Inggris. Melalui kegiatan pengabdian ini juga mereka dapat mengenal banyak kosa kata bahasa Inggris dan menggunakannya dalam komunikasi lisan sederhana. Diharapkan kegiatan pelatihan bahasa Inggris seperti ini dapat terus berlanjut, sehingga anak-anak di Rumah belajar dan bermain dapat memiliki kesempatan belajar bahasa Inggris lebih lanjut, tidak hanya pada keterampilan berbicara tetapi juga keterampilan bahasa Inggris lainnya.

Abstract

Tujuan dari pengabdian ini adalah untuk membantu siswa SD mengatasi kesulitan dalam menulis bentuk huruf dari angka dalam bahasa Inggris menggunakan media visual berupa Number Tracing Worksheet. Melalui penggunaan media visual ini, diharapkan terdapat beberapa perubahan atau pembaharuan, yaitu meningkatkan minat siswa dalam belajar English numeral, meningkatkan pemahaman siswa terhadap English numeral, meningkatkan keterampilan motorik halus siswa, dan meningkatkan kreativitas siswa. Dengan demikian, diharapkan pengajaran English numeral pada siswa SD dapat memberikan manfaat yang lebih besar bagi siswa dalam mempelajari bahasa Inggris.
