Abstract

A simple spectrophotometric method was used to determine the phosphate content in the water sampels. The method is based on the formation of molybdenum blue complex from the reaction of orthophosphate and ammonium molybdate followed by reduction with ascorbic acid in the aqueous sulfuric acid medium. The color intensity of the molybdenum blue complex is proportionally to the phosphate content in the solution. The system obeys Lamber-Beer’s Law at the 890 nm in the concentration range of 0.1-1 mg P/L and the linier calibration graph was obtained with the slope, 0.6334, intercept, 0.0074 and correlation coefficient of 0.9988. This official method was also used for the quantitative analysis of phosphate in the water samples and the satisfactory result was obtained. The range of phosphate concentration in the water samples are 0.033 – 2.943 mg P/L.

Abstract

Nitrite is one of important food additive that used as a preservative and curing agent for the meat product. Since the adverse effect of nitrites to the human health has been reported, the government regulated maximum allowable nitrite content in meat product is 125 mg/kg. Hence, continuous monitoring of the existence of nitrite, especially in the meat products are important to conducted. Quantitative analysis of nitrite in the meat product, especially sausage has been described. The spectrophotometric measurement of the nitrite contents was conducted by using Griess method. The absorbance of both standard solution and sample carried after 30 minutes at the maximum wavelength 520 nm. A linier calibration curve was obtained in the range of 0.1-0.5 ppm, with the R2 value is 0.997. Subsequently, the method was applied to determine the nitrit contents in sausage samples. The spectrophotometric determination showed there were 6 samples have nitrite contents more than maximum allowable nitrite content in the meat product.

Abstract

Garlic is one of the herbs that widely used by people to cure the disease, which caused by a bacterial infection. Garlic contains Allicin which has an antibacterial effect on Salmonella typhi. Several studies have been proved that garlic has antibacterial activity against the growth of microbes. This research was conducted to study the potential effect of the garlic juice inhibitory on the growth of Salmonella typhi bacteria. This research was used experimental post-test only control design and disc diffusion method with MHA media. This study was carried out by using four different concentration there were 20, 40, 60 and 80%. The negative and positive control was used sterile aqua dest and chloramphenicol. The inhibition zone was determined by observing the clear zone around the disk. The result of the data analysis using the Least Significant Difference (LSD) showed that there was a significant difference between each concentration of the garlic juice. The obtained results proved that garlic juice affects the inhibition zone of Salmonella typhi growth. The largest inhibitory zone was found at the concentration of 80% with the diameter inhibition zone was 23 mm. This diameter inhibitory zone was classified as a very strong inhibitory effect category. These results concluded that there was a linear correlation between inhibitory potential with the concentration of garlic juice.

Abstract

AbstractFinal Waste Disposal Area at Suwung, Denpasar is one of the final waste disposal area that uses an open dumping system for the waste management techniques. These waste management techniques cause the lack of the groundwater quality. On the other hand, this groundwater is still being used as a main water source by the residents around the final waste disposal area. The aim of the study was to determine of the lead concentration in the well water at the Suwung Waste Disposal Area. This research uses descriptive method with observational approach while the analysis of lead was conducted by using atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS). Based on the results, it is proved that there is 1 sample contains of the lead concentration more than maximum allowable of lead according to the Minister of Health of Indonesia No. 416/MENKES/PER/IX/1990. The excess of lead concentration in the water samples may influenced by the distance of the dug wells from waste disposal area which does not meet the requirements, so the pollution occur easily.Keywords: Final waste disposal area, lead determination, atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS)

Abstract

Jatropha curcas twigs are part of the Jatropha curcas which can be utilized as herbal treatment by the community to overcome the vaginal discharge problem. Vaginal discharge is a common symptom experienced by most women caused by Candida albicans infection. This research used the true experiment with posttest only control design which aimed to know the content of phytochemistry and antifungal potential of Jatropha curcas twigs extract on Candida albicans growth. Extract of Jatropha curcas in this study was obtained through a solvent extraction process using ethanol 96% by the method of maceration. The method used for the phytochemistry test was a qualitative method, while for the antifungal potential test was done by diffusion method with the concentration of 10%, 25%, 30%, 40% and 50%. The results of Phytochemistry test showed that Jatropha curcas twigs extracts are saponins, tannins, and flavonoids, but no alkaloid compounds were found, however a test result of the antifungal potential test showed that the average diameter of inhibition zone of Candida albicans growth is 0 mm. The conclusion of this study is Jatropha curcas twigs extracts can not inhibit Candida albicans growth, For other researchers which use jatropha curcas twigs, are suggested to do a phytochemical test quantitatively and to test the antifungal potential with dilution method.

Abstract

Hepatitis B Virus can be transmitted by pregnant women to the fetus during labor. Therefore Hepatitis B examination during pregnancy is very necessary to find out whether during pregnancy pregnant women are infected with the Hepatitis B virus or not, so prevention can be done immediately. The purpose of this community service activity is to determine hepatitis B infection in pregnancy through HBsAg and Anti-HBs examination with a rapid test in Kediri District. The Community service activities is done by HBsAg and Anti HBs examination with Rapid Test, and provide counseling about Hepatitis B in pregnant women. Results of this community service showed from 100 pregnant women, obtained the age of  of pregnant women 26-30 years (32%), the highest gestational age are 7 months (21%), the highest number of gravidas was gravida 2 (47%). Knowledge about Hepatitis B after counseling is 92% of knowledge in good category. 6% of pregnant women were infected with the Hepatitis B virus.Keywords: Hepatitis B, Pregnant Woman, Hepatitis B Screening.

Abstract

Chronic dyslipidemia, especially in hypercholesterolemia, can directly disrupt endothelial cell function through increased formation of oxidized LDL which will stimulate an inflammatory response including interleukin 6 (IL-6) release. For this reason, it is necessary to have anti-inflammation that can reduce the effects of hypercholesterolemia on blood vessels. Polyphenols have anti-inflammatory effects and kenikir leaves are vegetables that are rich in polyphenols. This study aims to prove the effect of kenikir leaf (Cosmos caudatus) ethanol extract on IL-6 levels of serum of male Wistar rats fed high cholesterol. The method used is a true experimental study with a Post-test Only Control Group Design. Samples using 24 male rats were divided into 4 groups DS, DTK, Ss, and Cc. DTK, Ss and Cc groups were given high cholesterol feed for 20 weeks. In the 17th to 20th weeks the Ss group was given additional simvastatin and the Cc group was given an additional extract of Cosmos caudatus leaf. Whereas the DS group was only given standard feed for 20 weeks. After 20 weeks all rats in all four groups were examined serum GSH and IL-6 levels. The results showed the highest GSH serum levels average in Cc with p-value=0,016 but not different from Ss. IL-6 serum levels in DTK were higher than those of the other three groups and were significantly different with p-value=0,035. The difference occurs between DTK and DS, Ss and Cc, not different between DS, Ss and Cc. The ethanol extract of kenikir leaf influences the serum IL-6 levels of male Wistar rats fed high cholesterol.
