Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out if applying Dictogloss technique can improve writing skills of eighth-grade students. The researcher applied pre-experimental research design. One hundred and thirty seven students of SMPN 5 Palu took part in this research, and class VIII A which consisted of 23 students were selected samples of the research. The data were collected using a test administered twice; it was in the form of a pre-test and a post-test. The data were analyzed statistically. The results of the data analysis showed that the t-counted value (15.3) was higher than that of the t-table (1.717) by applying a significance level of 0.05 with a degree of freedom (df) 22(n-1). This means that the hypothesis is accepted. In other words, applying Dictogloss technique can improve writing skills of eighth-grade students of SMPN 5 Palu.

Abstract

This research aimed to identification and analysis students’ ability and difficulties in writing descriptive text. This research used qualitative descriptive methods. The research subject are X grade students of Madrasah Aliyah Negeri 1 Palu. The research took 20 students as sample. This research used interview and test to collect the data. The result of this research shows the students’ ability, the students’ difficulty in writing descriptive text and the factors students’ difficulties in writing descriptive texts. The difficulties are difficulties in generic structure, difficulties in grammar, and difficulties in mechanic, while the factors that cause the students’ difficulties in writing descriptive text are lack of proficiency in the text production skills, and lack of interest in learning English

Abstract

The objectives of this research are (1) to find out the strategies that the English teachers use in teaching reading comprehension at SMP Labschool Palu, (2) to find out the reasons why the English teachers chose the strategies in teaching reading comprehension. The subject of this research all the English teachers at SMP Labschool Palu. This research was descriptive qualitative research. The technique of collecting data were questionnaire and interview. The researcher analyzed the data by using descriptive qualitative research. The result of this research showed that there were five strategies mostly used by the English teachers in teaching reading comprehension to be applied in the classroom. There were (monitoring comprehension, recognizing story structure, question answer relationship, graphic and semantic organizers, and summarizing). Based on the analysis of interview to the teachers, those strategies can help the teachers because the students more active and the students could exchange their opinion with their friends.

Abstract

This research aims to find out the grammatical errors and the dominant error written by the tenth-grade students of SMA Karuna Dipa Palu in the academic year 2021/2022 in writing recount text. The researchers used the descriptive qualitative design. The subject of this research was all the tenth-grade students of SMA Karuna Dipa Palu which consisted of 32 students. In collecting the data, the researchers used test as the instrument. The researchers analyzed the data by using error analysis. The result of the research showed that the students made 412 errors in their recount texts which are classified into: simple past tense (34.7%), preposition (6.1%), pronoun (3.9%), spelling (10.7%), and punctuation (44.7%). The dominant error is punctuation. The dominant errors occurred because the students pay less attention to the use of good and correct punctuation. They are apathetic to the use of punctuation.

Abstract

The research aims to determine whether Applying Webbing Strategy can improve students’ reading comprehension grade Eight students of SMPN 1 Sojol. This research applied a quasi-experimental research design. The research sample was Eight D as the experimental group, which consisted of 25 students, and Eight A as the control group, which consisted of 27 students. The instrument used in collecting the data were pre-test and post-test. The treatment was given six times. The data were analyzed statistically to determine the difference between the pre-test and post-test. As a result of the study, the mean score of the experimental group taught by applying webbing strategy was improved compared to the control group taught without applying webbing strategy. In other words, applying webbing strategy can improve the reading comprehension of grade eight students of SMPN 1 Sojol.

Abstract

This research aims to find out the kind of error frequently made by the students in using simple present tense in descriptive text and the source of errors made by the students. This research is qualitative descriptive. The subject was selected by using purposive sampling. The subject of the research was the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 9 Palu consisting of 30 students. The techniques for collecting the data were tests and questionnaires. The researcher used the technique of analyzing the data from Ellis and Barkhuizen. The steps to analyze the data were collecting data, identification, description, explanation, and evaluation. The result indicates four types of errors namely omission, addition, misformation, and misordering. The most frequent error made by the student was omission and the least frequent error was misordering. The interlingual transfer was the highest gradation of possible source of students' error in using simple present tense.
