Abstract

Happiness is the right of all human beings, children, adults and parents, they have the right to be happy with different sizes of happiness. This difference in the size of happiness is because each individual has different experiences and life patterns so that the assessment of the expected happiness is also different. The research "Elderly Miss Happy (Case Study: Javanese Family in the SUCI Elderly Group RW 06 and RW 07 Banyumanik District Semarang)" uses symbolic interaction theory. The problem of this research is what and how to measure the happiness of the Javanese ethnic elderly and in what way they endeavor it and what is gained from this happiness, starting from seeing experiences and life patterns, hopes for happiness to the reality of realized happiness. This research uses a phenomenological method. Phenomenology is a method to finding the meaning behind the phenomenon being revealed. Besides that, it also uses qualitative data, primary data sources and secondary data. Primary data sources are from observations and interviews while secondary data sources are from previous research and books. The results of this study are: (1) the measure of elderly happiness is measured by the elderly's meaning of their life experiences. Being a part of the SUCI’s group is positioned as a substitute with children and being happy with other elderly people, (2) when they are aware of their old age, life choices are more oriented towards the happiness of the end of their life and after their death. The method taken is to deepen religious knowledge. They find happiness in the SUCI group because in this group they can more intensively carry out religious activities. This means that the needs of elderly are gathering each others because of the warm interactions between the elderly. The argument given is the awareness that their children have high mobility, causing the family to be busier and less concerned about the elderly so that the elderly who live with the family feel less family support. The relentless nature of Javanese elderly prefers to reduce conflict causes they not to ask their family first, for attention and try to find happiness outside the home. Happiness is present when the elderly join the SUCI elderly group.

Abstract

Sedekah laut ritual (sea thanksgiving) is an annual tradition which is held in the Islamic month of Suro by fishing communities in Indonesia, including the fishing community in Sadeng, Gunungkidul, DIY. This ritual functions as a means for the fishermen to ask for safety and sustenance to The Almighty God and to communicate symbolically with Nyi Roro Kidul who is the ruler of the south coast. Therefore, this ritual becomes a moral obligation for the fishing community. There is an interesting fact which can be uncovered regarding how this ritual became a tradition in the first place. Once an agrarian society, the people in Sadeng switched job into becoming fishermen after the establishment of Sadeng Fisheries Port (PPP) in 1992. This establishment brought huge impacts on the lives of the local people, including the emergence of sedekah laut, which is a common tradition for a fishing community. In this ethnographic study, the writer wants to examine what this sedekah laut is all about as well as to identify its meaning and function for Sadeng community. It can be drawn from the results of this study that the meaning of this ritual is communicating with Nyi Roro Kidul in order to ask for safety and to get plenty of earnings from fishing. Sedekah laut also functions as a means to fix social fragmentation, to redefine values, as well as to restore balance and solidarity between groups within the community. That way, Sadeng people can live a peaceful and content life.

Abstract

Along with the development of modern times, society maintains its tradition as a unique cultural identity, including the phenomenon of rituals that take place under a large tamarind tree which is believed to be the firing of a sacred figure named Mbah Gosang, located in the middle of an urban area, precisely at Peterongan Semarang Market. The focus of the discussion which is the main objective of this research is to interpret the ritual meanings express in the ritual implementation. This research uses the theory of symbolic interactionism in explaining ritual phenomena, which in implication refers to social actions carried out by individuals in representing cultural meanings and symbols around them. The method used in this study is in the form of ethnographic methods, while the source of research data is obtained from participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and literature review. The informants consisted of the caretaker and Mbah Gosang pilgrim who had been directly involved in the implementation of ritual traditions. Based on the results of the study, the phenomenon of rituals carried out under the Mbah Gosang tamarind tree has two forms of cultural traditions in the form of a pilgrimage ritual and suronan ritual which in essence involves Mbah Gosang as an intermediary for prayer or tawassul to God. The series of ritual processions has their own symbolic meaning. Generally, people who carry out these rituals have the motivation to improve the economy, look for prosperity in life, and look for clues in dealing with life problems. The function of the ritual itself is as a form of respect for ancestors, cultural inheritance, forms of effort, reminders of death, and means of social integration, while the purpose of the ritual is to draw closer to God Almighty.

Abstract

This paper focuses on qualitatively interpretive studies of the North Coast Javanese people and their culture. The underlying assumption is that in many ways, the people and culture of north coast Java are different from those of Inland Java. The results of the study showed that: (a) the north coastal Javanese community, is more dominated by the Islamic way than the general pattern of inland Javanese; (b) The choice of employment is more about being a trader than being a government employee; (c) In the merchant community, the social interaction model tends to be straightforward, and the level of Javanese Language used tends to be rough.
