Abstract

The implementation of learning in the current situation can be carried out using online learning as part of the methodology to answer the educational challenges caused by the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. The role of technology in the online learning process in previous research studies has made it a major and important factor for successful learning in this emergency situation. This study aimed to investigate a philosophical perspective using the critical realism paradigm regarding the role of technology in online learning practices based on e-learning systems and justice in social interaction in aspects of learning implementation during the COVID-19 pandemic. This was a qualitative method with a critical realism approach. The results indicated that several critical arguments exist to rebalance the role of technology back to its origin, which is not a major factor, but a factor that still requires support from personal factors, personal behavior, and teacher readiness in facing technological developments. The findings of the study can be used to implement technology-based online learning while keeping practical and social justice in mind for both students and teachers.

Abstract

The story of Panji is a form of cultural revitalization that has begun to fade and be displaced by the presence of superheroes who have been adopted from western culture. Unfortunately, the majority of these figures are contrary to the noble values of the Javanese ancestors and are more oriented towards the modernization of western culture. Therefore, this study aims to map the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of the Ngelmu application which is oriented towards growing interest in learning for elementary school-age children in getting to know Panji Stories and the moral messages it conveys. The results of the study show that Ngelmu has unique and interesting features in increasing students' interest in learning. Among them are: Mirengake, Ngagara, Nyimak, Ngromo, Mitutur. From the results of the analysis, it was concluded that Ngelmu is one of the applications designed to introduce and preserve the Panji Story so that it continues to exist even though the use of technology is classified as increasing. Through this Panji story, users will be introduced to a leader who has noble character and manners in accordance with the teachings of Javanese culture. In addition, this application aims to make the younger generation familiar with original Indonesian heroes before they admire superheroes from western countries.

This pilot research objective is to investigate the rhetorical structure of an introduction section of scientific articles written by tertiary students of social and humanity studies. The research method used is qualitative, which applied purposive sampling in collecting the data. Four journals from Talenta Publisher were selected based on several characteristics, such as socials and humanities discipline, English articles written by undergraduate and post-graduate students, and published in the last two years (2019-2020). The data analysis used an interactive model by applying data collection, condensation, display, and conclusion drawing and verification. The Creating Research Space (CaRS) model used for data analysis is to describe the rhetorical structure of the introduction section in the articles. The results of this research stated that Move 1 Step 2 (making topic generalizations), with a percentage of 31%, is identified as the dominant rhetorical structure. On the other hand, move 2 Step 1c (question-raising) and Move 3 Step 3 (indicating article structure) are not realized in all data. In conclusion, the majority of authors do not follow the standard rhetorical structures of a scientific article. Some of these journals have not applied rhetorical structure, which is an important thing that must be followed, such as Move and Steps, which consists of components: background of the study, research gap, problem statement, and research aim

Abstract

Indonesia has many tribes and produces many traditions. Tradition is a reflection of certain community cultures. One of them is the Mengetong tradition at the wedding ceremony of the Minang Pariaman community in Medan. This research is initiated by the distinction of this tradition which causes controversy. As a brief overview, Mengetong is when the amount of money given to the bride and groom is read aloud during the wedding reception. The initial perception of this research is to present an opinion based on empirical evidence that this tradition has a positive value rather than a negative one. This research applies the performance theory and local wisdom value theory. The data are in the form of text, and co-text taken from the video recordings of the Mengetong activity, supporting documents, and an interview with a customary holder. The results show that Mengetong is included in five elements of performance; 1) specific schedule, 2) specific instruments, 3) non-profitable, 4) having certain rules, and 5) being carried out in a specific location. This result indicated that Mengetong is indeed a tradition performed at a specific time, using specific instruments/tools, not a profit-oriented activity, applying specific rules in action and done by certain tribes. Moreover, local wisdom identifies this tradition as a social value in cooperation and reciprocity activity. This result also portrays the togetherness (gotong-royong) characteristic of Indonesian people. In the end, this study claimed that Mengetong in the Pariaman Wedding ceremony is meant to help each other when a family conduct a wedding ceremony.
