Abstract

The M ller and northern Schwaner mountain ranges are home to a handful of tiny, isolated groups (Aoheng, Hovongan, Kereho, Semukung, Seputan), altogether totaling about 5,000 persons, which are believed to have been forest hunter-gatherers in a distant or recent past. Linguistic data were collected among these groups and other neighbouring groups between 1975 and 2010, leading to the delineation of two distinct clusters of languages of nomadic or formerly nomadic groups, which are called MSP (M ller-Schwaner Punan) and BBL (Bukat-Beketan-Lisum) clusters. These languages also display lexical affinity to the languages of various major Bornean settled farming groups (Kayan, Ot Danum). Following brief regional and particular historical sketches, their phonological systems and some key features are described and compared within the wider local linguistic setting, which is expected to contribute to an elucidation of the ultimate origins of these people and their languages.

Abstract

This paper describes the development of temporal expressions in a bilingual child acquiring two typologically distinct languages: Italian and Indonesian. These languages differ from one another in the way tense and aspect are encoded and it is interesting to observe what kind of cross-linguistic influence one language system has on the other. Italian verbs are heavily inflected for person, number as well as for tense, aspect and mood, whereas, in Indonesian, the encoding of tense and aspect is lexical rather than morphological; moreover encoding is optional when the context is sufficiently clear. This means that tense and aspect in Indonesian is often marked pragmatically rather than grammatically. This paper considers the interference effects that result from simultaneously acquiring these two typologically distinct systems.

Abstract

This paper describes the encounters that Italian travellers, explorers, and traders had with the peoples of the Malay world at the turn of the century. In particular, it focuses on the linguistic descriptions and observations made by Italian explorers of the languages spoken in the places they visited and included in their travel writings. In addition to the pioneering work of Pigafetta, the Italian scribe who followed Magellan on his voyage around the world and produced the first “Italian-Malay vocabulary” in 1521, other linguistic descriptions and observations were made by Giovanni Gaggino, a merchant who compiled an Italian-Malay dictionary in Singapore, Odoardo Beccari, a naturalist who offered reflections on the Malay spoken in Borneo, and Celso Cesare Moreno, a ship captain and adventurer. Elio Modigliani, in his travels to Nias, Enggano, Mentawai, and the Batak country, provided detailed information on the local languages spoken in these islands in North and West Sumatra, while Giovanni Battista Cerruti, an explorer and ship captain who visited Singapore, Batavia, and the Malay Peninsula, commented on the languages, as did Emilio Cerruti, who travelled to the Moluccas and Papua. This paper focuses on how these languages were described and perceived by these nineteenth-century Italian travellers. It concludes that these explorers were all united by a common necessity, namely the importance of speaking local languages in order to be able to interact with the people they met on their travels. Malay, in particular, was always viewed positively as an international language, a powerful tool for communicating, learning, and interacting with others, and a beautiful language. Conversely, the other minority languages were seen as poor and simple, but still a powerful tool to overcome barriers and lay the foundations for intercultural communication.

Abstract

This study explores the philosophical depth embedded in “Syair Surat Kapal,” a cultural artifact from Riau, Indonesia, celebrated for its enchanting poetry and melodious rhythm. The research employs a qualitative methodology within the framework of cultural studies to investigate the philosophy of Islamic Da’wah embodied in the manuscript. The objective of the study is to examine the impact of Islam on “Surat Kapal,” particularly within the context of the oral tradition of the Malay community in Rengat. It traces the influence of Islamic teachings on this community’s oral heritage. This study employs literature review and interviews with seven informants from Riau. The findings of this study underscore the significant role of “Surat Kapal” in shaping the Islamic identity within the community. The underlying philosophy of “Syair Surat Kapal” as a medium for Islamic da’wah is anchored in the belief that literature and poetry are potent mediums for disseminating religious teachings and fostering moral values. The vivid imagery and compelling narrative of the poem in the manuscript not only captivate the audience but also impart significant lessons about faith and belief in God. Consequently, “Syair Surat Kapal” exemplifies the power of literature in religious and cultural propagation within an academic context.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the impact of implementing Mandi Balimau Kasai local wisdom values in history education on the development of students' religious character. The research employs an experimental design with a pre-test and post-test one group design. The research subjects consist of 45 high school students in the Riau region. Data collection instruments in this study include questionnaires used to measure students' religious character. Data analysis methods involve both statistical analysis and descriptive analysis. Descriptive analysis is used to summarize students' religious character data before and after the treatment, providing a general overview of the changes in students' religious character. Statistical analysis includes paired t-tests and simple linear regression analysis. The results of the study indicate that students' religious character in the pre-test stage significantly influences their religious character in the post-test stage. A positive regression coefficient of 0.75 suggests that an increase in religious character in the pre-test stage is positively correlated with an increase in religious character in the post-test stage. Furthermore, an R-squared value of 0.74 indicates that approximately 74% of the variability in religious character in the post-test stage can be explained by students' religious character in the pre-test stage. This research provides valuable insights into the role of local wisdom values in enhancing students' religious character. However, there are limitations to the study, including the focus on Mandi Balimau Kasai as the sole local wisdom in Riau and the research subjects limited to high school students. Therefore, a recommendation for future research is to broaden the scope by examining the effectiveness of implementing other local wisdom values in a broader context. Additionally, other factors influencing students' religious character, such as the social environment, religious education, and family influences, need to be considered. The results of this study can be beneficial in developing more effective curriculum and teaching strategies to enhance students' holistic religious character development.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine the practice of Petang Megang tradition on indigenous Muslim Malay people in Pekanbaru Riau in welcoming the holy month of Ramadhan, and to investigate the influence of Hinduism on this annual tradition. Petang Megang ritual does not only function as a passed-on tradition, but also reflects the acculturation of Hindu and Islam, social interaction, and community culture. This research is a descriptive study, in which data obtained are presented, analyzed, and explained. This study found that Petang Megang tradition reflects a strong relationship between the two beliefs, Hindu and Islam. The relationship can be seen in the similar concepts of purification in Petang Megang which is similar to tirtayatra in Hindu and wudhu (ablution) in Islam. Despite bringing similarity to Hindu tradition, Petang Megang serves as a medium of Islamic dawah (propagation) where it introduces a cultural practice in its relation to religious event (Ramadan). This study suggests that Petang Megang is a symbol of longstanding harmonious co-existence between Hindu and Islam in the region.

Abstract

This research aims to develop Historical Map media to improve students' chronological thinking skills. This research uses an R&D method which consists of four stages, namely. The research subjects consisted offrom 6 experts, 2 teachers, and 150 class students XI provided an assessment related to the media being developed. The collected data was analyzed through validity, reliability, T test and N-Gain tests. The research results show that the Historical Map media obtained a validation score of 3.65. Meanwhile, the practicality score for the Historical Map media obtained a score of 4.01, which indicates that the media developed can be easily implemented in history learning. The T test obtained a score of 0.000, which shows that there is an influence of using Historical Map media on students' chronological thinking skills. The results of the N-Gain Test indicate that the influence of using Historical Map media on students' chronological thinking skills increased by around 69%. Therefore, it can be concluded that the development of Historical Map media to improve students' chronological thinking skills has proven to be valid, reliable, practical and effective.
