Abstract

Papaya contains vitamin C and beta-carotene which are useful as antioxidants and can be used as a sunscreen. The content of the active substance is affected by the type of raw material. This study aims to determine the antioxidant activity and SPF value of extracts obtained from simplicia and fresh fruit. Extracts obtained from simplicia and fresh fruit were determined antioxidant activity by DPPH method and SPF values by spectrophotometric method. The results showed that the antioxidant activity of papaya extract obtained from simplicia had IC50 values smaller than papaya extract obtained from fresh fruit, whereas the papaya extract obtained from simplicia had IC50 values of 175 μg / mL and the papaya extract obtained from fruit fresh is 209 μg / mL. While in the sunscreen test, the SPF value of papaya extract obtained from simplicia is greater than the papaya extract obtained from fresh fruit. SPF value of papaya extract obtained from simplicia is 37, while papaya extract obtained from fresh fruit is 35. The conclusion from this study is papaya extract extracted by the drying process of the initial material (simplicia) has antioxidant activity and SPF values that are more optimal than papaya extracts extracted without going through a drying process first (fresh fruit).

Abstract

Pneumonia is the leading cause of death in children under five years of age and contributed to 14% of total global child deaths in 2013. Pneumonia is an inflammation of the lungs caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites and attacks the lung parenchyma. After receiving antibiotic therapy, the cure rate for pneumonia is relatively high, but the mortality rate due to pneumonia infection is still high. Therefore there needs to be an effort to add therapy to improve patient clinical outcomes. Vitamin D plays a role in the body's defense function, both in natural and adaptive immunity and in the body's defense in cases of infection, malignancy, and autoimmunity. This study was an experimental double-blind, randomized clinical trial that was analyzed using Kaplan Meier. The research subjects were children aged six months to 18 years divided into two treatment groups, namely the treatment group (n = 35) and the control group (n = 35). The treatment group received vitamin D, while the control group a placebo. The data taken included the results of clinical studies of patients. This study indicates that vitamin D is effective in accelerating the cough frequency of patients infected with pneumonia.

Abstract

The need for halal cosmetics around the world is currently still an interesting issue to continue to be discussed, considering that there are still many cosmetics that are suspected to contain haram ingredients in them. One of the cosmetic products that are often used is perfume. The purpose of this study was to identify the alcohol content in perfume products derived from natural and synthetic materials and to determine the alcohol content in these perfume products. In this study, the gas chromatography method was chosen because with this method the analysis process can be carried out quickly, more efficiently, with high resolution, sensitive, relatively simple, and inexpensive. The tests carried out include qualitative and quantitative tests. The results of the qualitative test showed that all the perfume samples tested showed positive results containing alcohol. While the results of the quantitative test for determining the alcohol content showed the results of samples D and E which were perfumes derived from synthetic materials containing alcohol with levels of 7.9% and 5.7%, respectively. Sample D contains the highest percentage of alcohol. Based on the fatwa from the MUI, cosmetics are allowed to contain fermented fruit alcohol with a level of less than 0.5%.

Abstract

Antioxidants are compounds that are able to stabilize free radicals in the body. Free radicals are highly reactive molecules because they have unpaired electrons so that they can interact with the molecules of the body's cells. One of the plants that has properties as an antioxidant for star fruit (Averrhoa bilimbi L.) Star fruit is one of the species in the genus Averrhoa. The purpose of this study was to find out what are the active compounds contained in ethanol extract of 70% star fruit (Averrhoa bilimbi L.) and to determine the antioxidant activity in ethanol extract of 70% star fruit (Averrhoa bilimbi L.) extracted by the maceration method. In this study using the DPPH method. The selection of antioxidant activity testing using the DPPH radical suppression method is due to its easy, simple, fast and sensitive work in evaluating antioxidants from natural ingredient compounds. Based on the results of the study qualitatively ethanol extract 70% star fruit (Averrhoa bilimbi L.) contains secondary metabolite compounds flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, and terpenoids and quantitatively has an IC50 value of 74,625 ppm which is included in the category of strong antioxidants.

Abstract

Humans have a body that is equipped with a defense system that is considered to be an antioxidant which can minimize the damage caused by free radicals. Ramania (Bouea macrophylla Griffith.) is an herbal plant that has antioxidant properties and inhibits free radicals. This study aims to determine what are the active compounds contained in ramania leaves and determine the IC50 value. Maceration extraction method, obtained the yield of extract 42.5699 g, and the content of compounds contained in the extract are flavonoid compounds, saponins, tannins, steroids, and alkaloids. The extract was tested for antioxidant activity using the DPPH radical inhibition method quantitatively using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer with quercetin as a positive control. In testing the antioxidant quercetin with concentrations of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 ppm, the results were 3.3434 ppm. In the antioxidant test of methanol extract with concentrations of 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 ppm, the results were 6305 ppm. The results obtained IC50 value of 6.305 ppm which is included in the category of very strong antioxidants. It can be concluded that the methanol extract of Ramania leaves has antioxidant activity.
