FIRST LANGUAGE INTERFERENCE IN ENGLISH SPEAKING PERFORMANCE OF UNIVERSITY STUDENTS OF MUHAMMADIYAH SORONG (UMS) Rizal Akib

The research objective was to find out the interference of first language occurs to English Speaking Performance at English department Students in University of Muhammadiyah Sorong and to find out what kinds of first language interference occurs to English Speaking Performance at English department Students in University of Muhammadiyah Sorong. The research design applied qualitative descriptive analysis which used to analyze the data taken from the real speaking of respondents that recorded on the progress of data collection. Numbers of respondent are asked to give their opinion or responses on selected theme provided on this research to elicit their real speaking performance which is recorded and analyzed. The result of this research revealed that there were first language interference occurred at English department students in university of Muhammadiyah Sorong and several kinds of first language interference were occurred on Word Pronunciation (54%), Dialect (38%), and Word Repetition (8%) which based on 15 respondent and total populations from three semesters of English Department in University of Muhammadiyah Sorong.

Pengaruh Penggunaan Google Classroom Terhadap Self-Directed Learning (SDL) Siswa Dalam Pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris Rizal Akib; Kris Uluelang

This study aims to examine the use of Google Classroom to enhance studentsâ€™ Self-Directed Learning (SDL) in English Learning. By using quasi experimental study, 50 students were pre-tested before given an English learning supported by the use of Google Classroom during a semester. Following the treatment, the students then post-tested using PRO-SDLS instrument in order to find out whether there was statistically differences between result of pre-test and post-test. The result shows that, there was statistically significant differences in the studentsâ€™ SDL between the pre-test and the post-test. Therefore, it can be concluded that using Google Classroom can helped students to develop their SDL skill in English Learning.

The Studentsâ€™ Perception of Teacher Roles and Rapport in Teaching Writing Kris Uluelang; Rizal Akib

This research was conducted to find out the studentsâ€™ perception and expectation of teacher roles and rapport in teaching writing at Universitas Muhammadiyah Sorong. The method used is mixed-method approach by applying convergent parallel design. The instruments of the research were questionnaires and interview. It reveals that the students have a negative perception of their teacher roles; the teacher does not perform his roles as a motivator, resource, and feedback provider in teaching writing. Instead, the students need it. On the other hand, students have a positive perception of their rapport. They think that their teacher respects them and also friendly. Unfortunately, the good rapport does not influence the studentsâ€™ perception of their teacher. The students still need a teacher to be a motivator, resource, feedback provider, empowerer, monitor of their learning, and role model. The teacher also has to be friendly and respects them to make a good rapport.

English is an international language, and there are many people or students in the world learning English. All the students have different abilities or strategies for learning English. Without a plan and the students cannot improve their English skills well. So when the students want to learn English should have a strategy because it is will helpful. This research is to determine the method and obstacles English students face in learning English at home during the COVID-19 pandemic at students' universities. This is descriptive, using a qualitative approach with data collection techniques using interviews. The sample in this study was 5 participants from the English Department in the 7th semester of the academic year 2020./2021. The researcher found that of the five participants, the most widely used strategy by students was the first social strategy; most of them practiced English with their parents, family, or friends at home during the pandemic. The second is a compensation strategy; in this strategy, students learn English by listening to songs or reading books to improve their vocabulary. The third is a memory strategy; in this strategy, students learn by listening to songs, radio, or watching on youtube instead of taking vocabulary notes, and they memorize them during the pandemic. Constraints faced by students when learning English at home during the pandemic. Many obstacles faced by students, namely lack of money, not being able to buy internet quota, laziness to move because of the pandemic, unable to accept and laziness to take all the courses given by lecturers, and not having learning tools such as laptops, English dictionaries to help them learn English at University.

Kegiatan Pelatihan dan Pendampingan ini dilakukan untuk memberikan pembinanan dalam kontes debat Bahasa Inggris dan pengembangan kemampuan berbicara Bahasa Inggris bagi mahasiswa Universitas Muhammadiyah Sorong. Tahapan-tahapan dalam kegiatan ini adalah 1). Planning atau perencanaan, 2) Pelaksanaan yaitu sosialisasikan tentang Teknik debat Bahasa Inggris yang mengadopsi British Parliamentary System. 3). Evaluasi yaitu dengan membuat kelompok yang terdiri dari Government and Opposition kemudian melakukan simulasi debat yang membahas tentang topik yang telah disiapkan. Metode dalam kegiatan ini adalah memberikan pendampingan yang dilakukan oleh para isntruktur. Berdasarkan hasil pengamatan dan evaluasi, peserta termotivasi dan mulai percaya diri menggunakan Bahasa Inggris selama pelatihan dan pendampingan debat. Selama proses pendampingan dan pelatihan, ada kendala yang dihadapi peserta yaitu kurangannya vocabular atau kosa kata. Kegiatan ini dilakukan untuk dapat mempersiapkan peserta debat Bahasa Inggris National University Debating Championship (NUDC) tingkat regional maupun tingkat nasional.

Autonomous is the individual capacity to take responsibility for their own learning activities. Autonomous learning adapted learning method that learners use to obtain their own learning needs and goals, determine the most current learning method, and assess learning activity. This research aims at identifying students’ autonomous learning strategies in academic speaking class. There were 20 students from the English Education Department were involved to gather the data. This study employed a quantitative approach in order to get the data. The data were taken by using a questionnaire. The result shows that the general description of the students of the English Education Department at Universitas Muhammadiyah Sorong was not included a specific description of how the students employed the autonomous learning strategy for learning particularly in academic speaking. The researcher found two kinds of autonomous learning strategies which were metacognitive strategy and social mediation strategy.
