Abstract

In playing various video game, gamers unconsciously and automaticly embodied theirself inside the video game. The embodiment process are portrayed through icons, avatars and mostly their in-game characters, while the immersion happens during the process of playing, which can occur inside and outside of the video game. The playing intensity and the amount of time spend in playing video game determine the overall process of embodiment and immersion, beside the player sociocultural condition. This research uses ethnography to identify how gamers play the video game to fulfill their intrinsic needs such as competence, autonomy and relatedness. To cite this article (7th APA Style): Yuwono, A. Abstract

Abstract The Reconstruction of Tionghoaness Identity in Indonesian Indie Movies in the Era of Post-Suharto. ‘Being a Chinese’ has always been an issue in Indonesia. It refers to the identities of ‘being a Chinese’ that were formulated by Indonesian people, both by the half-Chinese Indonesians and non half-Chinese Indonesians. The efforts in formulating those identities were mediated by various discourses found in public debates and works of arts represented the Chinese society life in Indonesia, such as in films. In this research, the social constructivism approach was applied. The experiences in life traversed by the Chinese society in Indonesia depicted in indie movies were studied to get the subjective meanings. The representations were not scrutinized merely from the meaning, but also by considering the historical aspects as, among others, the determinant factor of the means of production and reproduction. It was carried out to get the full picture of complicated background about the historical and cultural conditions of the Chinese people in Indonesia. The complicated depiction will be very beneficial in interpreting the meanings of the indie movies as a result of production and reproduction of the real life experienced by the Chinese society. The identity of Chinese people in Indonesia was shaped by the internal and external perspectives, by the formal and non formal point of views. The external point of view was the one given by the non Chinese people, whereas the internal was how the Chinese view themselves. The formally built identity was related to the laws applied in Indonesia. Arbitrary cultural collaborations informally developed the new Chinese identity that grew from the spatial contexts between the Chinese people in Indonesia.

Abstract

Kata kunci: cerpen, singularitas, identitas, komunitas, multitude Seno Gumira Ajidarma, through short story “Selamat Pagi Bagi Sang Penganggur,” uses the position of the main character to assess the condition of other individuals who are considered to lose their freedom as a person. As unemployed, the main character - Aku - also has difficulty unlike what is considered identical to his identity but has more freedom than other workers who are in certain structural systems. Through this short story, this paper questions the author's tendency to lead to discourse about the concept of singularity. The point of view of this paper uses the theory developed by Antonio Negri and Jean Luc-Nancy regarding the concept of singularity and identity. This paper found that the author tends to criticize the concept of identity that classifies individuals as commodities that are only seen based on their value. This form of identity occurs because of the power of the global order in the form of capitalism as biopower. Singularity which portrayed on the community that built in the story is offered by author as an alternate. Family as the smallest formable community and imaginary community which formed on “Aku’ universe as the main character is the formed community. In this community, singularity empowers individuals as a distinct and independent subjects. Keywords: short story, singularity, identity, community, multitude

Abstract

Abstract

In the world of digital video games, human players are present through surrogates. Surrogates in the video game is a character which also called by the term avatar which is a self-representation of real players. The presence of avatars in role playing games are formed through a process of creation by the gamer. The production of avatars cannot be separated from the unconscious mind of the players, the unconscious desire, ego and ideology. This avatar creation process continues ongoing, following the progress of the video game story. The decision, the path, and the act that the player take in completing the story are gradually reshaping the avatar. In the end, the avatar eventually became a manifestation and reflection of the unconscious minds of the video game players. This research conducted using ethnography and Jacques Lacan psychoanalysis theory.

Abstract

This article seeks to explain whether anti-diversity hoaxes that become viral on mass media disrupt the institutional memory of kebhinekaan (diversity) in Indonesian society. The spreading of hoaxes is a phenomenon of postmodern society, and thus this study uses a post-structural approach, in this case, using the theory of Slavoj Zizek. Memes used as data mostly deal with themes of nationality, ethnicity, and religion. The results of this study show that anti-diversity hoaxes are used for short-term purposes (power politics), so they do not intervene the institutional memory of Indonesian society and its belief in diversity.

Abstract

In society, there are various structured power relations that connect individuals who share certain interests and objectives. In these power relations, hegemony plays a significant role. Hegemony is the most important notion in the Marxist tradition, especially as it is conceptualized by Gramsci. This paper tries to re-read the issue of hegemony in the context of ideological contestation in Javanese society in Indonesia. The problem will be examined based on post-Marxist theory, especially as it relates to the demolition of the strong order of capitalism. Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that hegemony forms itself in layers. The layers influence each other so that there is one area of hegemonic intersection. In Javanese society these days, there is a “competition,” especially in Yogyakarta, to return, feel, and become more Javanese than others. The implication is that there are parties who feel more Javanese than others. This case in this study is referred to as the post-Javanese society. However, in the intersection area, there are all-powerful puppeteers.

Abstract

The short story “Manuel” written by Seno Gumira Ajidarma set in the Santa Cruz incident in Dili (1991), raised humanitarian issues in the relation to state power. East Timor citizens lost their human rights because of the Indonesian military invasion of their territory, and were in a homo sacer or bare life situation.  This research uses the theory of political philosophy developed by Giorgio Agamben. The method used is descriptive qualitative. The research questions that are trying to be answered: first, how does the state impose the state of exception so that it raises bare life in short story “Manuel?”; and second, how does the author form of criticism through the short story “Manuel?” towards the New Order citizenship politics? The finding of this study are: first, First, the motive for the application of the state of exception is using the pretext of integration, anticipation of communism, development, and agreements related to the exploration of Timor Gap; and secondly, criticism of the state was conveyed through the speeches of the figure of Manuel, borrowing the speech of East Timor activists, and the adoption of discourse of resistance to the Indonesia military. However, this strategy has an impact on the originality of criticism which deserves to be questioned again.
