Abstract

Osteoarthritis is the common form of arthritis. Indonesian prevalention of radiologic knee osteoarthritis was 15.5% in man and 12.7% in women. Indonesian prevalention of osteoarthritis was high and need special attention because of the complication which occurred, such as patient handicap and movement problems. While increasing of Indonesian time period of life expentancy caused higher number of osteoarthritis population. According to data of WHO: Indonesian time period of life expentancy was 68 years old at 2009 which asummed follow by one to two million handycap patient. This number getting higher and higher in the future equal with increasing of senille population in Indonesia. Osteoarthritis is caused by multifactorial and chronic progressive disease, so it badly impact to patient morbidity. Pathogenesis of osteoarthritis not clear enough, some scientists declared that osteoarthritis was a degenerative disease and the others declared as an inflamation disease. According to many predispossing factors caused to ostheoarthritis, an adequate prevention was available to depress number of osteoarthritis case in the future. Therefore some continuing study of epidemiology, pathogenesis, risk factors as basic science, to provide development of compact pathogenesis process to support an adequate preventional management in the future.

Abstract

Patients with active lung tuberculosis (TB) have low body mass index (BMI) because of a wasting. Changes in body weight during the initial period of TB therapy correlated with the death risk, illness severity and relapse as well as decrease of patients physical function. This study aimed to measure the effectiveness of soybean supplementation among TB patients with standard therapy in improving physical function and nutritional status. Fifty nine patients were randomly divided into two groups.Intervention group received one hundred fifty gram nutritional supplementation and control group did not receive anything. Both groups were on the same regular antituberculosis treatment. Assessment of outcomes were done twice, before supplementation and then after 1 month of the treatment. There were significant differences in the changes in proxy physical function parameter in the control and treatment group (3.16 ± 0.83 vs. 4.50 ± 1.47, P < 0.05) and changes in nutritional status variable (0.33 ± 0.15 vs. 0.47 ± 0.16, p < 0.05). However there was no significant difference in the change in mid upper arm circumference (0.83 ± 0.31 vs. 0.93 ± 0.31, p > 0.05). Further research is needed to confirm this result.

Abstract

Abstract

Background:  repeatedly heated cooking oil is cooking oil that is used many times, had saturated fatty acids containing free radicals. Red rosella petals extract contains antioxidants to minimize the effects of repeatedly heated cooking oil that can raise the levels of SOD. The aim of this study was to analyzed the effect of red rosella’s petals extract against oxidative stress of Wistar rats were induced by repeatedly heated cooking oil with examine levels of  serum SOD.This research was conducted True Experimental Laboratory with a completely randomized design (CRD) and use the post test. The sample consisted of 24 male rats were divided 4 groups: negative control (fed with standard diet); positive control (fed with standard diet + administered by repeatedly heated cooking oil as much as 2.1 ml / kg bw); treatment group dose I (fed with standard diet + administered by red rosella extract dose 540 mg / kg bw + repeatedly heated cooking oil as much as 2.1 ml / kg bw), and treatment group dose II (fed with standard diet + administered by red rosella extract dose 810 mg / kg bw + repeatedly heated cooking oil as much as 2.1 ml / kg bw). Analysis of data using statistical test One Way ANOVA and Tukey HSD (α = 0.05).Results: There were significant differences (p = 0.000) between groups. Red rosella extract treatment group dose 810 mg / kg bw and 540 mg / kg bw were significantly different from the positive control (p = 0.000). Red rosella extract group dose 540 mg / kg bw was significantly different from the negative control (p = 0.000). Red rosella extract group dosage of 810 mg / kg bw was not differ significantly from the control group (p = 0.171).Conclusion: The red rosella’s petals extract dose of 810 mg / kg bw and dose of 540 mg / kg bw were able to prevent oxidative stress. Optimal deose of red rosella petals extract dose of 810 mg / kg bw was the most effective, because the higher antioxidant activity (67.33%) at dose 810 mg / kg bw dose than 540 mg / kg bw.
