The purpose of the research is to explore the experience aesthethic in the novel O written by Eka Kurniwan through postmodernism perspective. The research method is content analysis because it'is a literary research. The result of this research are the writer finds the experience aesthetic elements in the novel O, such as object directness, felt freedom, detached affect, active discovery, and wholeness. Besides, the writer also explores about the marriage between postmodernism and experience aesthetics in the novel O which focus on plot and character.

AbstrakThis tendency draws interest to find politeness strategy in command. This paper is using dialog script of tukang ojek pengkolan (TOP) written by Sokat Rahman. In this analysis the writer uses speech act theory by Searl, pragmatic theory by Austin, and politeness strategy by Brown C. Levinson. Based on the analysisthe writer found some commands which uttered by pilteness strategy off record and bald record. Some charecters in this serial comedy series Tukang Ojek Pengkolan preferred off record to bald record in their commands. By using this strategy, the characters uttered indirectly or vaguely to the hearer. In this strategy, the speaker tried to avoid the direct FTA, and it removes the characters from the potensial of being imposing. The Correlation Between Vocabulary Mastery And Self Esteem On Students’ Speaking Skill Nurmala Dewi; Jimmi Jimmi

Abstract - The purpose of this research was to find out whether there is a significant correlations between vocabulary mastery and self esteem on students’ speaking skill. The population of this study was X grade students majoring in natural science at SMU 64 Jakarta Timur, while the sample was 60 students were chosen randomly from those 3 classes. The writer used three instruments to gain the data : a vocabulary test, a speaking test, and a self esteem questionnaire. A quantitative analysis that included descriptive statistic and the correlation and regression analysis tests were conducted to answer the research hypotheses. The research results found that there is a significant simultaneous correlation between vocabulary mastery and self esteem on students’ speaking skill. This finding has proved the views which are vocabulary as a main language component and self esteem as affective factor have contributions in developing learning language especially fon speaking skill. Analisis Penerjemahan Metafora Bahasa Inggris Ke Dalam Bahasa Indonesia Pada Novel Vivaldis’s Virgin: Gadis-Gadis Vivaldi Akhmad Hairul Umam

The objective of this research was to analyze and to get a deeper understanding toward metaphor translation, the equivalence between the source and target text as well as to investigate some factors that cause the equivalence including method, procedure, and semantic structure of translated metaphor. Metaphor as the object of this research was taken from a novel, Vivaldi’s Virgin written by Barbara Quick. The novel was translated into Indonesian: Gadis-gadis Vivaldi by Abdullah Al-wazin and published by Maroon Books Publisher in 2008. Each metaphor had different methods and procedures for its translation. A method used by the researcher on this translation text study was content analysis through descriptive qualitative method. There were 162 metaphors taken from this novel and classified into three categories: (1) metaphor translated as metaphor, (2) metaphor translated as a simile, (3) simile translated as a simile. Based on this data, the researcher found 110 text of metaphors translated into metaphors, 21 metaphors translated into simile and 31 of similes translated into simile. Each metaphor which was made up of different collocations has different image and equivalent. However, the reseach proved that this work had enought equivalent particularly between the source and target text. Translator of this novel mostlly used modulation and preposition method which was very much close to the naturalness of the target text.Keywords: Translation, metaphor, simile, equivalent.

The Effects of Grammar and Vocabulary Mastery on Students’ Reading Comprehension Lilik Yuliawati

The objective of the research is to know the effects of grammar and vocabulary mastery on students’ reading comprehension. This research is a survey at private universities in Bekasi. The total sample of the research is 80 students. The data collection technique of grammar mastery, vocabulary mastery, and reading comprehension is by conducting three sets of multiple choice tests consisting of 30 questions for each test. The data analysis technique of the research is multiple linear regression analysis. Before conducting the regression analysis, there are some prerequisite tests, among others the normality, linearity, multicollinearity, and heteroscedasticity test. The result of the research is: 1) There is a significant effect of grammar and vocabulary mastery jointly on students’ reading comprehension at private universities in Bekasi. 2) There is a significant effect of grammar mastery on students’ reading comprehension at private universities in Bekasi. 3) There is a significant effect of vocabulary mastery on students’ reading comprehension at private universities in Bekasi. The objective of this research is to know the effects of of learning media towards student’s listening skill. The research methodology that is used eksperimen methodology. The subject of this research is taken from the whole population students of at Private Universities in Jakarta and sampel is taken from fourth term. From this research shown that the result of SPSS Fo=105,959 and sig=0,000(0,000<0,05), it can be concluded that the learning media give significant effect towards student’s listening skill.

The objective of this study is to identify schizophrenia of the main character, John Nash in Beautiful Mind movie directed by Ron Howard. This study used descriptive method to analyze data. The study revealed the following findings: (1) The type schizophrenia of main character is Paranoid schizophrenia.(2) The effects of schizophrenia of John Nash are life disruption and substance abuse. John does something abnormal, he speaks with people who is not real, and become a smoker. (3) The symptoms and the treatment of schizophrenia in this movie are positive symptoms such as delusion and negative symptoms are asociality and alogia. For the treatment, there are two ways in the process treatment, the first way John tried drugs therapy, but it does not work. Second way, he tried to Social and Psychological Treatment, he learnt sociality with environment by meet, greet and talk with people around him and it worked.

Figurative Language in Kelly Darrow's Selected Poetry Cicih Nuraeni; Putri Amalia Peron

This research has the objectives proposed by the writers, they are: (1) To identify the types of figurative language used in Kelly Darrow’s selected poetry, (2) to find out the meaning of figurative language used in Kelly Darrow’s selected poetry, and (3) to know the mostly of figurative language that is used in Kelly Darrow’s selected poetry in this research. Figurative language is one of the elements of poetry that has become the poets’ way of expressing the art of his poetry and communicating his language to know the poet’s idea. Figurative language can include many words and phrases, and there are several types of figurative language. The primary sources of data are the research is conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The data sources of this research are taken from the poetry by Kelly Darrow. Then the writersss classify the data using McKenzie’s theory of figurative language that support it. The results of this paper shows there are many types of figurative language in Kelly Darrow’s selected poetry. Kelly Darrow uses metaphor, simile, irony, personification, and hyperbole as figurative language.

SEMIOTIC SIGNIFICATION ON JEANS ADVERTISEMENT IN THE ROLLING STONE MAGAZINE Sulhizah Wulan Sari

The study is aimed at revealing the meaning of jeans advertisements in the Rolling Stone Magazines. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative supported by Peircean theory that focus on the relationship of the sign, the object, and the interpreter. The sign of Jeans advertisements can be a part of the sentence or the words from the headline text, then the text itself is combining with the picture to get the new sign (interpreter), the researcher analizes and describes the meaning of the sign by Peirce’s triadic theory to get the semiosis process. Result shows that there are many expressions of lifestyle, motivations, identities, and expression of consumerism on meaning of jeans advertisements. Those interpretations based on interpreter’s experiences, knowledge, pointview, thoughts, cultures, and emotions. This study is important to reveal human’s feeling, expression, thought, idea, and ideologies through sign’s meaning investigation in communication. Keywords: Peirce, Semiotic, Jeans, Adverstisement

THE CORRELATION BETWEEN STUDENTS VOCABULARY ACHIEVEMENT AND STUDENTS READING COMPREHENSION ACHIEVEMENT AT THE SECOND GRADE OF SMPN 30 BEKASI Ferawaty Puspitorini

In this research there are two variables: the independent variable is students vocabulary achievement and the dependent variable is students reading comprehension achievement. The purpose of this research are to find out whether there is correlation or not between students vocabulary achievement and students reading comprehension achievement at the second grade students of SMPN 30 Bekasi. The research method is ex post facto. The research is conducted all the second grade students of SMPN 30 Bekasi. The population of research is the total numbers of students are 272 students there are 6 classes in the second grade. The students are given post test. The sampling technique is simple random sampling. The result of data analysis through correlation Pearson Product Moment which has been modification, = 23,806 if compared by . Value criticize of chi square for the df (degree of freedom) equal to 1, level significant 0,05, = 3,841. It means that >. So, from the hypothesis we can see that Ha is accepted and H0 is rejected. Based on the result from the interpretation the research concludes that there is significant The Correlation between students Vocabulary Achievement and Students Reading Comprehension Achievement at the Second Grade at SMPN 30 Bekasi.
