Abstract

Biodiesel is produce by transesterification process using alcohol and the most alcohol used in biodiesel manufacturing is methanol. Methanol is made from non-renewable material. Whereas, ethanol made from renewable materials and the price of pure ethanol is expensive. So, research to produce biodiesel with low ethanol concentration was conducted. This research was aimed to know the mole ratio of oil toward ethanol and the best reaction time in this biodiesel production. The mole ratios of oil toward ethanol used were 1:12, 1:14, 1:16 and the time reactions were one, two, and three hours. This research was started by heating the oil to temperature 60oC, then adding ethanol solution and NaOH and being reacted into several variations of time. After that, the separating and washing process were executed. From the analysis result, the biodiesel produced is appropriate with the requirements of SNI 04-7182-2006.

Abstract

Pond is one place that is used as a place to cultivate fish, shrimp, and other aquatic animals that can live in brackish water. Changes in water quality upstream and downstream of the pond due to pollutants may affect the ecological balance of waters. Pollutants can be determined by two simple parameters, the biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD). While the ability to break down pollutants (biodegradability) can be determined using the ratio of BOD/COD. BOD analysis using the Winkler titration method, whereas the COD analysis using titrimetric method. The value of BOD, COD, and the ratio of BOD/COD in the upstream area is 28.00 mg/L, 60.00 mg/L, and 0,467 respectively. While the value of BOD, COD, and the ratio of BOD/COD in the downstream area is 20.00 mg/L, 43.00 mg/L, and 0.465 respectively. Ratio BOD/COD obtained show that the organic pollutants in the pond is biodegradable.

Abstract

The transesterification  reaction  has performed to convert waste cooking oils into biodiesel with assistant of  heterogen catalyst of calcium oxide using reactor  in a laboratory . The reaction was performed in two stages that is the esterification followed transesterification reaction. The aim of research is to study the effect of temperature and time reaction on viscosity and biodiesel yield. The results showed that obtained biodiesel had viscosity value in accordance with SNI 04-7182-2006 about diesel-fuel viscosity.  At lower temperature (40, 45, and 50°C), the longer reaction time could lead to the increasing of biodiesel yield. Meanwhile, at higher temperature reaction (55°C and 60°C) the longer reaction time could reduce biodiesel yield. The highest biodiesel yield was obtained at following reaction condition: temperature reaction 50°C, 6 hours reaction time, ratio oil:MeOH = 1:48 molar ratio, % wt CaO = 8% to weight of waste cooking oil.
