Abstract

The aimed of this research is to describe about students’ ability  in translating mathematic  text as a material in English for Teaching Math Course at fifth semester in Math Education Program,  Math and Sciece Department of STKIP YPM Bangko in academic year 2019/2020. This ability to provide students to be bilingual teacher in math subject. This reasearch is descriptive quantitave research. It will be conducted in Math Education Program of STKIP YPM Bangko. The population is fifth semester students consists of 18 students. It uses total sampling, the researcher will use written test as the instruments of collecting data, it consists about translating mathematics operation, translating mathematic problem, and passage about mathematics. The students are asked to translate from target language to sourse language and source language to target language. In analyzing the data, the researcher will use the procedure reduce the data, classify the data, describe the data, and data display. To know about students’ ability in translating mathematics english text, the researcher will use three indicatorss; accuracy, readability and acceptability. It also categories into 4 level mastery; excellent, good, fair, and poor. The result of this research found that Students’ ability in translating mathematic text was excellent. Based on the aspect of mathematic text, mathematic passage was difficult to translate for them, and accuracy indicator was lowest score, they tend to omitted word and change the spelling. It can be suggested to train students to practice more the interaction to the text and use the effective strategy in translation.

Abstract

Abstract: Mind mapping is a way to store and to take the ideas out of the brain then to present ideas visually to show the hierarchical relationship of ideas. The purpose of this research was to see the effect of making mind mapping as a writing activity towards students’ ability in writing hortatory exposition texts. This research was an experimental research. It was conducted at SMA 5 Padang. Population of this research was eleventh year students of SMA 5 Padang. The sample was taken by cluster sampling. 11 IPA1 was experimental class and 11 IPA2 was control class. The data indicates that the result of pre test and posttest from the two groups: experimental and control group is different. The different could be seen from the hypothesis testing. T-obtained was bigger than t-table. It meant that the difference of the meant scores of the experimental and control group is significant. In short, making mind mapping as a technique in writing hortatory text gives positive effect on students’ ability in writing hortatory exposition text. Abstract

Abstract:The mastery of vocabulary is one of important factors to support language skill. Meanwhile, to make the student master the vocabulary is not an easy thing. They need media to help them in learning process. There are some ways should be applied to help student understand easily. One of them is learning vocabulary by using game.The main purpose of this research is to make a Dart Board game. This game can be used as an alternative learning vocabulary especially for Elementary School Students. The result of this study is a set of Dart Board Game, four set sheets of cards, and six darts. Abstract

The objective of the research was to investigate crews’ perceptions of Maritime English Usage at RORO Bengkalis. This research was quantitative and qualitative research. The population in this study was crews at Roro Bengkalis. A set of questionnaire was distributed to 28 crews regarding their perceptions on oral communication usage during their voyage and a face to face interview was carried out to 6 crews. In this research, measurement of these statements using the Likert scale ranging from 1 = Strongly Disagree, 2 = Disagree, 3 = Undecided, 4 = Agree and 5 = Strongly Agree. The data collected was analyzed using SPSS 22 to know the normality, validity, and reliability of the instrument. The results of this study showed that crews had positive perceptions on English for Maritime usage during their voyage

Abstract

As one of the foreign languages in Indonesia, English must be learned from junior high school to undergraduate level. As a foreign language, challenges arise both in terms of the teacher as the one who give instruction or students as objects as well as subject learners. Various responses can be found in class related to these problems, especially in the attitude of students during the learning process, student learning outcomes, and participation in carrying out group activities. This study aims to explore the obstacles faced by students in learning English and its causal factors in the environment of Karimun University. This study uses a qualitative approach with a questionnaire, observation, and video recording instrument. Analysis of research data is done in three ways, namely, data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions and verification. The results showed that the research subjects had various learning difficulties in English. This happens due to the different levels of English mastery between individuals.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to reveal what kinds the students’ reading strategies. The Participant in this research were the students of third semester of English Education Department of STKIP Muhammadiyah Pringsewu lampung who took Reading 2.  There were 38 students who involved in this research. Since this research used qualitative research design that involved case study, the researcher only took 5 students as the representative of group created by researcher  in order to get rich and deep information. The data collecting technique used in this research were think-aloud protocol, reflective journal that uploaded through wordpress and interview guide for reading strategies.  In analyzing the data, the researcher carried out some activities, namely describing, classifying, and connecting. The research finding obviously describe that the students used three main strategies in reading namely, Cognitive  Reading Strategy, Metacognitive  Reading Strategy and Compensation Reading Strategy.

Abstract

This study aims at describing metaphors translated form English to Bahasa Indonesia in the short story entitled Sepasang Mata Anjing Biru that was translated from Eyes of a Blue Dog by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. It also aims at describing the translation strategies in translating the metaphors. This study applied descriptive qualitative research. The data of this study were all clauses that contained metaphors, and they were obtained from in the short story entitled Sepasang Mata Anjing Biru that was translated from Eyes of a Blue Dog. The data were collected by using observational method which was supported by note-taking techniques. The data analysis was conducted by using translational identity method, because English was used in this study. The results of analysis were presented by using an informal method. The results showed that in translating the metaphors, most of the metaphor in source language were translated into metaphors in target language, and only 1 metaphor were translated into simile.

Abstract

Abstract : The objective of students in learning foreign language is to be able to communicate fluently. Since English is a second language in Indonesia, the effort to make students mastering this language is still seen to be difficult to do. Having rich vocabulary is the main factor supports students to speak English fluently. However, insufficient in teaching English vocabulary contributes to the inconvenient learning environment at school. Some of teachers do not have creative idea to encourage student to explore more about vocabulary. The lack of media and learning tools also contribute to those problems. The media of game for example is effective to be implemented in teaching process. The aspects of entertaining and educative are combined to convoy students to think creatively while playing. The Adjective Cards Game created to enlarge student’s ability in describing thing with their characteristics. It contains of Adjective and Noun cards with interesting pictures and information which motivate students to learn English in the class or at home with family members. Keywords: Vocabulary, Game, Adjective Card Game

Abstract

Abstract: The point of the examination is to discover answers to the topic of why some Indonesians choose to keep learning at the postgraduate level in the wake of finishing their master’s program. At the core of the examination is the investigation of the intentions or reasons which Indonesian, qualified people that could take up the other business then to become doctoral understudies. Motivation for accomplishing something is ordinarily alluded to as a lot of inside and outside variables that impact the choices or practices. In this venture, we did an overview of the thought processes to turn into a doctoral understudy through the recollections of PhD graduates. A subjective examination focused on the portrayal of 250 doctoral alumni who are presently functioning as teachers at Indonesian. Every one of them represented considerable authority in the field of instructive examinations and worked at a college for a limit of five years after the culmination of doctoral investigations.
