Abstract

 Abstract: Learning Reading for junior high schools can use a variety of media. Among them is by using the Flashcard Mini Series. This is a media or tool that contains images and writing to facilitate students in reading lessons. Inside the flashcard are words to remind students of what they have just read. This flashcard can also be used to warm up for students before reading or discussing a reading. This study aims to discuss one way to solve students’ problem in comprehending a text. The process of using miniseries flash cards is students are grouped into approximately 5 people. Then, the teacher gave a miniseries flashcards to each group. The teacher gives a text containing the contents of the miniseries flashcards. After that, students are given a new text and miniseries flashcards containing new material. Each group is given a different text. After completing the answer, the text and flashcard miniseries are given to other groups; they also do the same. The miniseries flashcards are answered in turn by each group. Miniseries flashcards as learning media are able to provide an understanding of reading where the media is able to represent the contents of the reading so that students understand the text easily. Keywords: Reading Comprehension, Miniseries Flashcards

Abstract

Reading comprehension of business texts is necessary for students. However, many students, especially D3- Business Administration department of state polytechnic of Bengkalis faced dificulties in comprehending the business texts. Therefore, TELLS Strategy was proposed. TELLS strategy is a strategy which stands for Study the title; Examine for clues; Look for Important words; Look for hard words, and identify the setting. This article aimed at finding out to what extent the strategy to improve the students reading comprehension of business text and the factors that influence the changes. This classroom action research was conducted in two cycles. The result found that the students’ score in reading comprehension of business texts test increased. The average score of students in cycle 1 was 64 and in cycle 2 was 70. Then, the factors that influence the improvement of students’ reading comprehension of business texts were interesting teaching material, teacher’s role, and students’ willingness to do all procedures of the strategy. In conclusion, the implementation of TELLS strategy could improve the students’ reading comprehension of business texts majoring Business Administration improved both students’ score in reading tests and their interest in reading activities.

Abstract

Abstract : Learning English is very important in this competitive world. It shows that we have to master English. However, in learning it, the learners still feel bored and face difficulties. For example, in learning Vocabulary, they always have problems in memorizing the words. Therefore, the use of learning media can be more effective and interesting way in learning. The main purpose of this final project is to make a matching game book which can be used as an alternative learning medium in learning Vocabulary, especially, for students in lower education level. The idea of this project is based on the real concept, the students actually still feel bored in learning English. This project results a set of matching game book consists of a game book, a sets of picture cards and a set of word cards. This game can be used in classes during learning-teaching process to help the students to memorize the word. By using this game, the student can learn vocabulary in a more interesting and effective way.Keywords: Matching Game Book, picture cards, word cards.

Abstract

Tourism is very important in Indonesia. However, there are many ways to promote tourism. One of the ways is through video. In promoting tourism in Siak Regency, many people have made tourism video but only in short videos. They are advertisement videos. The duration of the videos was limited and the dubber explained the exposure of the video used Bahasa Indonesia. Therefore, this profile video about tourism in Siak Regency will help Siak Regency in promoting tourism destinations. The main purpose of this final project is to explain the processes of making a profile video about tourism in Siak Regency. The method of this study is descriptive method. There are several steps in making this video such as collecting data, providing materials recording the video, giving the subtitles, continuing proceed with the process of dubbing, and the last was editing process. This video contains of ten places and a tourism event. This video can be used in order to help students, Tourism Office of Siak Regency, local community, and especially International community get information about the history and the tourism destinations in Siak Regency easily.   Tourism is very important in Indonesia. Abstract

At the Higher Education level, English as a General Subject acts as recognition for the primary focuses learning experience. Using these language skills and components, learners are not trained sufficiently. It causes many circumstances, such as poor performance, limited vocabulary, keen learning interest, a short amount of practice, and more. The requirement for teaching quality is that they can apply English as a medium of communication. The researchers offer a workable solution by adjusting the Integrated Approach to overcome this issue. Thus, the current research objectives are to determine the students' improvement, instruction process, and the influencing factors on their language abilities and motivational beliefs. It is designed as an Action Research. Accounting Major students, which consist of 37 students, are the participants of this research. Tests, observations, and interviews were included in the data gathering process. Then the findings reveal that 13.5 percent of students earned top grades. 40.5 percent of students got decent grades. However, there are already participants who obtained a sufficient level (32.5 percent) and less (13.5 percent). It finds that the Integrated Approach enables improving their English competence and learning motivation through the process of socializing, evaluating, controlling, assisting, and practicing. Furthermore, their improvement factors cover students' motivation, teaching approach, and lecturers' role. It illustrates progress in the learning process made by them. Eventually, this offers evidence that the Integrated Approach implementation favors optimizing their English ability and learning encouragement.

Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this research was to investigate whether Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) was effective to increase students’ writing ability in the context of teaching writing for the  second year  students  at  SMAN 1 Sungai Pakning. The research was carried out for three months. Students were selected by using cluster sampling. Dealing with the research instrument of collecting the data, some steps were made by using the action research of single cycle; plan, act, observe and reflect. Firstly, to identify the students’ ability in writing narrative text by using PAL, the written test was used consisting of pretest, treatment and posttest. Secondly, observation sheet was prepared which was used to observe directly the students in writing and the influence of PAL (independent variable) toward the students’ ability in writing narrative text (dependent variable). In this case, students who got poor score in pre-test became the writer and students who were good would be the helper. The average score of pretest was 58.21 and the post-test was 78.7. The difference was 20.49. The score of Standard Deviation was 6.84 and the match of t-test was 17.36. The progress of this research showed that the students’ ability improved by using PAL for 20.49 or 60.27%.Keywords: Peer Assisted Learning, Writing, and Narrative.

Abstract

Abstract: The objectives of the research are (1) to know the students response in teaching listening by using dictation (2) to describe how the improvement of students listening skill using dictation as a testing device. The type of this research is Classroom Action Research (CAR). The researcher implements dictation as a testing device in teaching listening within two cycles. Each cycle consists of two meetings. Every cycle consisted of four steps, including planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The qualitative data were acquired by observation, interview, and field notes. Meanwhile, the quantitative data were collected from the students pre-test and post-test during the implementation of the actions which were analyzed to get the mean scores to be compared and to determine the gain scores. Based on the observation checklist, the students’ response in learning listening became better. The result of the research shows that there are improvements in teaching and learning process. In the pre-test given before the treatment, the mean score is 50.45. After treatment in cycle 1 and conducting post-test 1, the means score is improved to 65.65. Then the researcher gives treatments in cycle 2. In the post-test 2, the mean score improved 79.16. From the explanation above, it can be concluded that using dictation technique in teaching listening could improve students listening skill and the students give positive response.

Abstract

This study analyzes the English-language slogan used by higher education institutions in West Java. The purpose of this study is to describe the linguistic patterns and to describe the substance contained in the slogans. This research used descriptive method in analyzing data since it was aimed to get a picture of the use of slogans in higher education institutions. The data were 63 English-language slogans of higher education institutions in West Java with the official web pages and electronic brochures on the Internet as data resources. This study shows that the English-language slogans used by higher education institutions in West Java consist of phrases and sentences. These phrases are noun phrase (41 or 64% slogans), gerund phrase (6 or 9.2 % slogans), verb phrase (4 or 6.3% slogans), prepositional phrase (3 or 4.7% slogans), and infinitive phrase (1 or 1.5% slogan). Meanwhile, the types of the sentence are declarative sentence (8 or 12.5 % slogans) and imperative sentences (1 or 1.5% slogans). This study also shows that there are 13 slogans (20.9%) which contain goal, 49 (77.8%) slogans which contain ideology, and 1 (1.6%) slogan which contains both goal and ideology.

Abstract

Abstract This research aims to analyze the ability and problem of students in writing analytical exposition text. The participants of this research were the students at XI IPA 2 SMAN I Ulakan Tapakis. The type of this research was descriptive research.  The data of the research was collected by administering writing task. The data collected were analyzed by using quantitative and qualitative analysis. The finding shows that the ability of students in writing thesis arguments, reiteration, language features (Simple present, passive voice and conjunction), vocabulary and mechanics was unsatisfactory. Furthermore they had some problems in writing thesis arguments, reiteration, language features (Simple present, passive voice and conjunction), vocabulary and mechanics. From the data gotten, it can be concluded that the students had unsatisfactory performance in writing analytical exposition text. Key words: students’ability, students’ problems, analytical exposition text.
