Abstract

This study aims to prove the effectiveness of zinc as a micronutrient to increaseimmunostimulatory Reactive Oxygen Intermediate (ROI) production in balb/c miceinfected by Salmonella typhimurium. Research was designed using randomized thePost Test Only Control Group Design. The sample of 24 male mice balb/c are groupedinto four groups, i.e. one control group and three treatment groups (treatment dose of 78ppm/day; 169 ppm/day and 260 ppm/day) intraperitoneally for 14 days with each groupconsisting of six rats. The independent variable is the provision of zinc with various doses, dependent variable is the ROI production of macrophages, which are checked by usingNitroblue Tetrazolium (NBT) Reduction Assay, and control variables are body weight, gender and age. All mice infected with Salmonella typhimurium 105 intraperitoneally onday 8th. At the end of treatment mice were killed and was examined for levels of ROI.Inspection results were analyzed by Kruskal Wallis test. Result showed that doses ofzinc of 78 ppm/day have immunostimulatory effective as the highest ROI productionof mice Balb/c infected with Salmonella typhimurium. Keywords: immunostimulant, Reactive Oxygen Intermediate, zinc (Zn)

Abstract

Carotenoids are important biological compounds in cancer prevention because theycan inhibit the formation of free radicals, which react directly with oxygen. This researchwas aimed to determine the effect of antimutagenic â-carotene on 7.12-dimetilbenz(a)antracene (DMBA)-induced mice. From the observation of the mortality rate during theresearch period, the DMBA group showed the highest rate of mortality compared to thecontrol group and the groups of â-carotene isolates. The incidence of tumors showed thedeclining trend in the groups of test animals that were given with the increasing dosesof β-caroten isolate, i.e. 1.82; 3.64 and 7.28 mg kg-1 BW. The result may be caused bythe increasingly high levels of â-carotene in the test solutions, resulting in the lowertissue damage and the inhibited growth of tumors in the lungs. Based on Kruskal-Wallisstatistical analysis conducted on lung histology observational data for ten samples ofeach treatment group, it was confi rmed that there were signifi cant differences betweentreatments, which mean that â-carotene isolates can inhibit cancer growth in lung andskin of DMBA-induced animals. Keywords: β-carotene isolate, antimutagenic, DMBA (7,12-dimetilbenz(a)antracene)

Abstract

Allethrin  is  one  of  synthetic  pyrethroid types which  is  used  in many mosquito repellents and has toxic potential. The aim of this research was to examine the infl uence of vitamin C and E antioxidant activity to the sperm quality of allethrin-induced albino rats. This research used a post-test randomized design. The population of the research were  8  hr/day  allethrin-induced male  albino  rats. The  sample  of  the  research was allethrin-induced male albino rats which were divided into 4 groups, i.e. group I was the control group, group II was the group treated with 1.8 mg vitamin C per day, group II was the group treated with 1.44 mg vitamin E per day, and group IV was treated with a combination of 1.8 mg vitamin C per day and 1.44 mg vitamin E per day. The duration of the treatment was 45 days. The sperm sample was taken in day 46. The data consisted of sperm count or amount, sperm motility, sperm viability, and sperm morphology, and then was analyzed with ANOVA followed by BNT. The result showed that vitamin C and E antioxidants signifi cantly infl uenced the the sperm quality of the 45-day mosquito repellent-induced rats. Overall, the allethrin-induced albino rats treated with vitamin C and E antioxidants were better in maintaining the sperm quality than single treatment of vitamin antioxidants. Keywords: allethrin, vitamin C, vitamin E, antioxidant, sperm  quality.

Abstract

Research on the vegetation diversity and bord habitat profi le has been carried outin the Mangrove Forest of Pulau Nyamuk in Karimunjawa National Park to examinethe relationship between vegetation types and mangrove habitat profi le and the spatialusage by birds. A transect method has been employed to survey the vegetation and thepoint count method was used to survey the birds. There were 14 vegetation types and 19species of birds from 14 families at two observational sites in mangrove forest in PulauNyamuk. Exchoecaria agallocha dominated the eastern part of Pulau Nyamuk, whereasLumnitzera racemosa dominated the northern part of the island. The vegetational spaceutilization by birds can be grouped based on the vertical vegetation stratifi cation, i.e. theland, the understorey, the subcanopy and the canopy. Keywords: mangrove vegetation, bird habitat, Pulau Nyamuk, Karimunjawa

Abstract

The aims of this research were to study the effect of using the omega-3 (O-3), omega-6(O-6), and synthetic cholesterol (Ch) on the reproductive quality of the male quails.Samples of this research were 35 of 4 weeks old male quails with 60 to 98 g of weight. The samples were grouped randomly into 7 groups, that are R-0 (control-group), R-1(0,163 mg O-3/100 g body weight), R-2 (0,326 mg O-3/100 g bw), R-3 (0,163 mgO-6/100 gbw), R-4 (0,326 mg O6/100 g bw), R-5 (20 mg Ch/100 g bw), and R-6 (40mg Ch/100 g bw). The treatment was given per oral in three periods with 5 days ofeach. there was a week intervening between periods. During the research, samples weregifted rations a basalic-woof (basalic-feed) for twice/day, at 7:00 and 16:00 o’clock. theamount of basalic-woof were 20 g of feed/100 g body weight/day. Water administeredin an ad libitum manner. This research was implemented during 8 weeks. The variableswere the level of testosterone, blood qualities, voice-qualities, color brightness of chestfur, and testis size. The voice quality data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA continuedby orthogonal contrast test. The other data were analyzed by descriptive statistic. Theresult of this research confi rmed that synthetic omega-3 and omega-6 (0,326 mg/100 gbw) and synthetic cholesterol (20 mg/100 g bw) could increase the reproductive qualityof the male quails. Keywords: synthetic cholesterol, synthetic omega-3, synthetic omega-6,reproductive quality
