Abstract

There are communication almost fail because of misunderstanding of the reference. Thus, explaining reference for its importance in communication is needed. Reference means pointing that is as an act in which a speaker or writer uses linguistic forms to enable a listener or reader to identify something. Reference can be divided into two: exophora and endophora. Furthermore, there two kinds of exophora: homophora and deixis. Deixis is a form of referring that is tied to the speaker´s context. In addition, deixis concerns the way in which languages encode or grammaticalize features of the context of utterance or speech event, and this also concerns ways in which in the interpretation of utterances depends on the analysis of that context of utterance.

Abstract

Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) is a program derived from CAL (Computer-Assisted Learning) which is implemented to language and the prime focus of CALL is on the usage of computers in language learning. Much of the research has been aimed at improving written communication skills and little has been done to address the issue of increasing oral proficiency. In second/foreign language classrooms, the CALL environment creates situations that stimulate interest, allows dialogue and communication, enhances creativity, fosters a sense of personal worth, facilitates collaboration among students working together, permits rich learning experiences for all students, and strengthens communication skills. By using CALL, many resources of material can be easily developed in teaching learning process.

Abstract

In communication, people cannot be separated from conversations where actually there is something to be implied on. The existence of implicature, however, is hardly needed as a tool to bond the interlocuters. Implicature is divided into two, i.e. conventional implicature and conversational implicature. To understand the implicature, the instruments such as speech events, reference, cultural background and daily experience are used.

Abstract

To English learners, writing has been considered the most difficult skill for some reasons such as the grammar, the vocabulary, and the background knowledge. To help them develop their writing skill, it is recommended to employ the peer feedback in the teaching learning process at the writing class. Providing feedback in the process of writing tend to have beneficial help for the students to improve the quality of their work, especially in writing an essay. This expectation is generally agreed since students often face difficulties in accomplishing their writing due to the complexity of the writing itself, the students’ factors and the teacher’s factors. From the writing aspect, mastering the language form such as grammar, diction, etc and the content of the essay seems to be common problems for many EFL students.

Abstract

This article explores the nature of public notice in Indonesian community. My aim in the first place is to describe the nature of public notices as to explain why some of them sound inhospitable or even impolite. The very apparent factors are due to the presence of  words  that imply writer’s exercise of power and thus a subordination to the readers occurs. In addition, I also try to propose some pragmatics recomendations for the writer of public notice in order to compose an effective, yet still polite, public notice through the accounts of context and politeness theory.

In the level of discourse practice, in opening, it was found that there are three main regularities in speech; these are phatic expressions, emotive function, and thanking. In content, the regularities are the use of jargon, poetic expressions and directive expressions. And in closing, the regularities are sequenced first by uttering the supportive utterance, poetic expressions, and farewell greeting. The last step, socio-cultural practice, it is found that there are 9 direct responses, applause for 77 times, laughter for 12 times, and last response by sneezing appears for once. Going through those steps, the researcher can take three dominant ideologies uttered by Obama; they are “Forwarding United State is needed”, “No choice except choosing Obama”, and “Raising tax is improper to raise citizen’s prosperity”.
