Abstract

This study was held to find English learning strategy used by 120 students of Faculty of Economics Universitas Merdeka Pasuruan and to discover their different level of intrinsic motivation and learning style. Oxfords theory of language learning strategy (1990), Amabiles theory of intrinsic motivation (1994) and Reids theory of learning style (1987) were employed in this study. The data obtained from Language Learning Strategy Scale, Intrinsic Motivation Scale and Learning Style Scale, analyzed with two way of ANOVA statistical technique. The results explained that there was a significant difference of language learning strategy applied by the students with high, moderate and low level of intrinsic motivation (F = 40.756, p < 0.05). There was no significant difference of learning strategy used by the students with auditory, visual, individual or group learning style. Social and meta-cognitive strategies were the most frequent strategy applied by all the students. Visual learning style and group styles were dominantly applied by Economics students 2016/2017 academic year.

Abstract

This study investigated on the variation of language learning strategies used by first grade students at ESP (English for Specific Purposes) especially for social and science departments, Merdeka University, Malang. This study used survey study. Both quantitative and qualitative research methods are engaged in this project. Quantitative methods are used to analyze data gathered from questionnaire results, while qualitative data are used to analyze data gathered from one-on-one semi structured interview. The population is 692 first grade students in faculty of economics and business; law, and engineering. The researcher took participant to be the sample of this study randomly in each department with the total participants 70 students. Based on the findings, it can be shown that social class which is represented by faculty of law and faculty of economics and business employ more to the compensation and social language learning strategy while science class which is represented by Faculty of Engineering employ more to the metacognitive strategy.

Abstract

In Indonesia, especially in Malang, people begin to learn English in order to improve their English ability. Learning English is different from learning mother tongue. They have to learn words which are completely different in their spelling, pronunciation, and grammar. So, to make it easier, language learning strategies are needed. Thus, the researcher is interested to investigate the degree of the use of language learning strategies and to find out whether there are any correlation between six categories of language learning strategies used by the students of the first grade at acceleration class of SMA Negeri 5 Malang and their English achievement.This study used quantitative approach related to statistical analysis. The subjects being investigated were 60 students on ten grades at acceleration program, senior high school 5, Malang. The data were obtained from Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) questionnaire completed by the students and their school grade report of the first semester.            The result reveals that the use of overall language learning strategies falls into medium level. Specifically, the students prefer to use social strategies as the most frequently used, followed by memory, cognitive, affective, metacognitive and compensation strategies. A positive sufficient correlation is found between metacognitive strategies and English achievement. This sufficient correlation can be examined by looking at the context since English is used as the foreign language in Indonesia.            In sum, the students of the first grade at acceleration class are the moderate users of overall language learning strategies. Metacognitive strategies are found as the strategies that correlate with students’ achievement. Therefore, the teachers of acceleration class should introduce and promote more about the metacognitive strategies to their students in order to increase English achievement. The researcher also suggest for the readers, especially learners to apply metacognitive strategies because it can improve language skill.Keywords: language learning strategies, English proficiency, the Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) questionnaire, acceleration class.

Abstract

For the last three decades, there has been a growing interest in the learner centered approaches in the areas of second or foreign language learning. This shift was brought about by the developments taking place in other fields of education which were concerned with exploring how people think and reason. So, this study would conduct a research on the variation of language learning strategies used by first grade students at ESP (English for Specific Purposes) for Faculty of Economics, Merdeka University, Pasuruan. This study used survey study. Both quantitative and qualitative research methods are engaged in this project. The population is 140 first grade students in faculty of economics. The researcher took all of the population to be the participant of this study. Based on the findings, it can be shown that the students are the high users of overall language learning strategies. From the meanscore result, it can be shown that the students at faculty of economics employ more to the social and memory language learning strategy because the materials provided by the lecturers was related with speaking and communication skills. Keywords – Language Learning Strategy, ESP

Abstract

In this 21st-century learning, which is interconnected with technological advancements is different from traditional language teaching, means teachers as the agent of education need to promote the rapid penetration of technology into the educational cycle. For that reason, the research examined the English writing teacher's experience in using Facebook, to support EFL learners in a tertiary level education in Indonesia, to know how the teacher integrate social media especially in teaching writing. The participants of the study were 21 EFL learners' majors in the English Department, as well as the instructor of writing class. The data obtained, such as transcript from interviews and class discussion in the platform was analyzed inductively, interpretively and qualitatively. The teacher’s counter-interviews had been tested using initial coding. The research offers language teachers with ideas to be taken into the platform in the context of the EFL and supports better instructional design using Facebook.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the type of vocabulary learning strategies that the first year students of Faculty of Economics at Merdeka University, Pasuruan commonly use. This study used qualitative research design; that is, to analyze vocabulary learning strategies used by the students. After the students had done to fill the questionnaires, the researcher conducted one-on-one semi-structured interviews to each of the students in order to get depth information about their vocabulary learning strategies. Based on the strategies for discovering meaning; using an English-Indonesia dictionary, guessing meaning from context, and analyzing pictures or gestures were the strong preferences. While, the less-used from discovering meaning were checking for L1 cognate, analyzing affixes and roots, and analyzing part of speech.  In terms of strategies for consolidating meaning; studying and practicing meaning within a group, imaging word form, and imaging word’s meaning were preferred. While, the less-used strategies from consolidating meaning were testing oneself with word tests, skipping or passing new word, and continuing to study word over time.

Abstract

The student's ability in understanding and using academic and research vocabulary was lack. Therefore, this research tries to enhance the students’ vocabulary achievement by applying Memrise and Quizlet Applications at one of the private university in east Java, Indonesia. This research applied Classroom Action Research using four procedures: Planning, Acting, Observing, and Reflecting. The researchers obtained the data from tests and questionnaires. The result reveals that the vocabulary implantation through  Memrise and Quizlet applications increases the students' achievement from the average score of 55.62 in Pre-Test to 89.54 in Post-Test. Furthermore, the students also presented a positive attitude (91%) to the implementation of Memrise and Quizlet for learning vocabulary. The lecturers or teachers can use Memrise and Quizlet Applications as media to motivate students and provide them with fun and independent learning. The students' vocabulary achievement increased after learning vocabulary using Memrise and Quizlet applications from the result presented above. The majority of the participants in this research also favored using Memrise and Quizlet applications to implant the vocabulary. Therefore, the researchers suggest that the teachers or lecturers who teach vocabulary use Memrise and Quizlet applications as an alternative media to implant the vocabulary materials to the students in long-term memory.

Abstract

Abstract
