Abstract

The present study aims to seek the stages of how young learners forming their questions. It is believed that in making the questions, learners are going trough several developments until they can create the question perfectly. Stages from Pienemann, Johnston & Brindley (1988) were used as the developmental classification of question formation. While Richards’ (1973) Errors stages were used in analyzing the errors of question formation. Two students with different genders were taken as the participants with narration manuscripts as the data collection. The results were very surprising; both learners could perform complex question formations with only few errors. Though they are young learners, structuring a complex question seemed not difficult for them. However, the more difficult the question formats, the more errors the students made. They students commonly simplified the questions format, which made the formats sometimes, went wrong. From this interesting result, It is expected that this study can be an initial effort to conduct bigger and wider area of research in the future.

Abstract

In the previous years, the students at the place where the present study was conducted were taught the English connected speech through drill. This used to bring about students’ poor attitudes and unsatisfactory achievement. This study was aimed at examining if selected songs would improve the students’ connected speech performance. Nonequivalent Control Group Design was used in this experimental study. It involved six intact groups of students attending Pronunciation course – three were randomly assigned to the experimental group and the remaining three assigned to the control group. Both groups were pre-tested. The results were equal. After 3 sessions of connected speech lesson both groups were tested again. The post-test results of these two groups were then compared to see if the sample means were significantly different. As the study also aimed to find out the students’ perception towards the teaching practice implemented, a questionnaire was employed. The t-test showed that the difference of the sample means was not significantly large. Nevertheless, based on the feedbacks that were elicited through the questionnaire, the use of songs for teaching the English connected speech seemed to remain promising. Overall, the study showed that the use of songs for teaching the English connected speech tended to indicate a prospective better learning outcome. As the experiment took only 3 sessions, the chance for such treatment to be effective is increased if period of study is extended.

Abstract

Integrating Islamic values in non-religion subjects at masdrasah has been crucial to do. This study outlines the teachers’ beliefs and practices on integrating Islamic values in English lesson at Madrasah Tsanawiyah (MTs) Jawa Timur. By using qualitative approach, this study involved 6 English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers from Surabaya, Malang, and Pasuruan representing the demography of the city as metropolitan city, education city, and santri city. Data were taken from classroom observation and interview which then those were analysed by firsly categorizing into some dimensions. The teachers’ beliefs were categorized into their knowledge on integration, the important of integration, and integration in English lesson as well as the supporting policy from the school. The teachers believed that the integration of Islamic values is significant in English lesson as the manifestation of K-13 focusing on KI 1 and KI 2, and school policy. The beliefs influence the teachers’ practices in which they have been trying to insert Islamic values in their teaching activities. The level of integration was still at integrating religious routines such as ‘doa bersama’, ‘reciting some Surah’, ‘warning praying time’. The integration in the content of English lesson was still not strongly practiced even some teachers have done it by giving added values when explaining a particular material. The situation was mostly influenced by inability to operationalize the values into the teaching materials and the lack of model for integration. Further study on how to operationalize the integration, and on developing the model of integration will be worth investigating.
