Journal of English Language and Literature (JELL) is a journal published by STIBA-IEC Jakarta. This journal is published two times a year (March and September). The main purpose of this journal is to advance and foster English Language Teaching or education, research, and Literature. The journal provides research to increase awareness, consideration and analysis of issues in Teaching English as Foreign Language or in Literature, and also promotes the interchange of ideas, and comparative studies in this field. The Journal calls for unpublished original manuscripts to be considered for publication. The papers submitted to the Journal should not have already been published elsewhere except circulated as conference presentations, nor should they be submitted simultaneously to another journal. JELL publishes the article twice a year, March and September.

Abstract

Principally, the objective of this research is to find out the result of achievement of student’s speaking skill through the performance of translation and interpreting studies. In view of that, this research constitutes one of teacher’s best endeavors to recognize the attainment of student’s speaking skill as the prerequisite for them to get a highly qualified competency for their carrier in the future. Hence, the objective of education for which the students pursue in the university can be accordingly achieved. The achievement of students speaking skill in the society is very important due to the fact that many kinds of world-class business opportunities need a qualification of competency-based speaking skill. The steps of improving the students speaking skill through translating and interpreting study are namely understanding linguistics, socio linguistics and psycho-linguistics and vocabulary as well.

Abstract

The Purpose of this study is to get the empirical knowledge of the Role-play technique to improve speaking ability, to know if the role-play effective in teaching speaking, to find the answer if the role is effective to improve English speaking ability. The technique of the research is qualitative. The data from field was done through observation in the classroom. Here the writer directly taught the students and observed students’ activities in speaking class. The writer explains the finding and gives some samples of role-play technique, activities in teaching and how to teach speaking through role-play technique

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the importance implementation of lesson plan” Mini Plan” to improve the competence of the perspective teacher of English at one of the English schools, IEC in Bekasi. The competence in this study referred to the competence of preparing lesson plan and implementing classroom practice using mini lesson plan . This research conducted on population of 30 teachers and sample of 7 teachers of English clasess in IEC Bekasi. This study was descriptive study. This study tells us the condition before the implementation of submitting mini plan and after that implementation.The result shows that the readyness, professioanalism, achievement of the teachers before teaching, and the students retention in class are increased.

Abstract

The purposes of this study are to know the kinds of figurative language and the general meaning used in selected lyrics of Justin Timberlake song. This research is designed to identify some figurative language by understanding the general meaning when they are used in the song lyric. The technique of descriptive analysis is used to analyze data of the figurative language used in the lyric of the ‘Mirror’. Based on research findings, the writers found some figurative languages in the Justin Timberlake’s selected song. It can be found that most of figurative languages which are used in lyrics of Justin Timberlake’s selected songs are “symbol, metaphor, personification and simile” that have a great exaggeration used to emphasize a point, used for expression or comic effect.

Abstract

This research aims to know and understanding the element of literature, especially in figurative language. The objectives of this research are (1). To identify some elements of figurative language are used by Avril Lavigne’s songs lyric. (2). To show the general meaning and detail meaning of the songs containing the figurative language itself in understanding songs lyric. (3). To find out the most and the least used figurative language of the songs. The data source used is the album self-titled Avril Lavigne by Avril Lavigne. In that album the writer chooses five songs to analyzed such as, Here’s to Never Growing Up, Bitchin’ Summer, Give You, What You Like, Hello Kitty, and Sippin’ on Sunshine. This research is descriptive qualitative research. It means that this research does not calculate the data and just gives description about figurative language that is contained in Avril Lavigne songs. It is done by using bold and underlining the songs lyric, classifying the figurative language and then giving the meaning. The result of this research is to discover some kinds of figurative language such as, Metaphor, Simile, Personification, Alliteration, Allusion, Hyperbole, Litotes, also Onomatopoeia

Abstract

Literature can be analyzed from many perspectives and point of views. By using psychoanalytic approach, this paper attempts to analyze one of the Shakespearean’s characters, Antony in the drama Antony and Cleopatra. The objective is to prove whether Antony truly suffers from Borderline Personality Disorder. Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a personality disorder whose essential features are a pattern of marked impulsivity and instability of affects, interpersonal relationships, and self-image. Psychoanalysis theory is a theory developed by Sigmund Freud that enables to analyze whether a person suffers from a certain mental disease. Using those approaches, the characterization of Antony can be analyzed from his words, thoughts and other character’s opinion about him and then compared to the symptoms of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and then found if they are matched. That Antony suffers from Borderline Personality Disorder can be finally proved.

Abstract

Speaking in English as a foreign language is highly complex and challenging skill for Indonesian students. It requires grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary mastery. It also needs students’ confidence to be brave to share their ideas. This study attempted to promote design thinking that can be used on teaching speaking in order to stimulate the teachers to try to apply this technique on their teaching and to enhance their students’ speaking skill. In order to reach the objective of the study, the qualitative approach was used. Based on the analysis, it showed that the design thinking technique guides gradually the students to overcome the problem situationally and contextually by understanding, observing, pointing view, ideating, prototyping, and testing all ideas related to the problem in order to get the distintive and creative solution. In other words, the students are directed to think critically and brave to share their thoughts in a spoken language. So, the students can get more chance to speak them up and it, certainly, can help the students to increase their speaking skill

Abstract

The objective of the research was to find out English vocabulary mastery between boys and girls, including words size in production. This was a descriptive qualitative research. The data was taken from students’ writing product. The data analysis was conducted through collecting, reducing and displaying. The research finding showed that, 1) the girls are able to produce more words than the boys; and 2) the girls have more vocabularies amount than boys.

Abstract

This study aims to check out the effect of vocabulary mastery toward the reading comprehension skill in the State of Junior High School in Bekasi District. The method used in this research is expose facto with the correlation and regression analysis that is connecting between data showing the level vocabulary mastery toward the reading comprehension skill of students in the State of Junior High School in Bekasi District. Sampling was done by random sampling technique. The respondents are 80 students in this research. The research instruments were the test questions with multiple choice forms. The result showed that there is a significant influence of vocabulary mastery toward the reading comprehension skill of English Language on students Grade VIII in the State of Junior High School in Bekasi District. This is evidenced by the acquisition of Sig value. 0.003 <0.05 and th = 3.019. Variable vocabulary mastery contributed 13.86% in improving the reading comprehension skill

Abstract

This thesis covers an analysis of movie. Moral value is one of the main aspects that emerges in the movie. The moral value in the movie makes an example in human’s life in reality. The importance of moral values in our lives is how to learn the life’s experience and the life will go on. Each person must have moral values respectively and should not give up if he or she gets a variety of obstacles and barriers in life. Everybody must still strive in a positive way in order to pursue their dreams and can become a reality and help each other in achieving dreams. The writer analyzed this movie in moral values by using qualitative research. This thesis describes about moral values which are found in this movie and about the effort of main characters to reach dream. Based on the analysis, the writer hopes everyone should still try to reach the dream. To elaborate the findings, the writer describes formative analysis by capturing the dialogue using detailed data. Other findings related to the study are stated
