Abstract

This study aims to investigate the commissive acts produced by the two USA presidential candidates in 2020 campaign. Campaign is selected as the source of media to gather data since the utterances tend to be more complete and not cut by mediator as if in a debate. The researcher employs a corpus analysis to study the commissive acts produced by USA presidential candidates. The researcher built his own corpus by transcribing the data from the speech of the candidates. There are total 9246 words built as the corpora of this study. The data were then calculated by using Antconc 3.5.8 software to look at the occurrences and class of commissive acts appeared. Further, the researcher also provided an in-depth description of the analysis to support the findings of the study. The study found out that there were more commissive acts performed by Donald Trump compared to Joe Bidden with 87 and 77 respectively. The speech of Donald Trump in his campaign also contains more classes of commissive acts compared to Joe Bidden’s campaign which are 4 classes and 3 classes respectively. It is expected that this study contributes to the board of knowledge in pragmatics area, corpus analysis, and specifically to commissive act production. Specifically, this study contributes to the tendency of politicians in performing commissive acts as a sign of commitment to their voters.

Abstract

Continuing professional development (CPD) is imperative for teachers. English language teachers are not exceptions. In continuing their professional development, teachers actually have flexibility to choose either training or self-directed CPD approach. Therefore, it is assumed that depending on the gender and the career developmental stage that they are in, teachers may choose different CPD approach. Thus, this study was aimed to see the relationship between teachers’ career developmental stage, gender and their selection of CPD approaches. In order to achieve that, this study employed descriptive quantitative approach. The participant involved were 54 EFL teachers in Majalengka, West Java. The data were collected by using questionnaires. Chi-square was used in order to test the three hypotheses. The result revealed that the teachers mainly showed positive comments on CPD. Furthermore, it was found that there was a significant relationship between the teachers’ career developmental stages and CPD approaches. On the other hand, the findings signified that there was no relationship between gender of the teachers and their CPD approaches. As the recommendation it is expected that the teachers could maintain and regulate their commitment on continuing professional development. In addition, the government, especially the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture is also expected to provide wider variety of professional development approaches so as to bridge the diverse preferences for continuing professional development (CPD) of the teachers in Indonesian setting.

Abstract

The present study attempts to determine move dynamics types in teacher-student’s interaction. The research design employed in this study was qualitative content analysis. The data obtained were the form of utterances gained from teacher-student’s interaction in English classroom interaction from the second-year students of SMA Negeri 1 Tanjungbalai class XI IPA 1-3 totaling to 90 students and 3 teachers involved. The data were analyzed by following Martin’s framework of move in systemic functional linguistic theory. The findings of the study exhibit that there are three types of move dynamic found in teacher-student’s interaction namely clarification (cl)-response to clarification (rcl), confirmation (cf)-response to confirmation (rcf), and challenge (ch)-response to challenge (rch). The dynamic of move realized in the data happens due to some reasons such as the unclear information from the teacher, and the prior knowledge possessed by students. The findings imply that a teacher should consider having a dynamic interaction. This can help support the achievement of students’ success in the teaching-learning process. The dynamic of interactions in the form of clarification, confirmation, and challenge shows that students follow and comprehend the meaning uttered by student.

Abstract

Covid-19 outbreak has brought a great disruption to instructional process. Needless to say, the goal of instructional process needs to shift from student centred learning to promoting learner autonomy. Yet, it is important to conduct a study which learn the students’ capacity to be autonomous. This present study aims at investigating learners’ autonomous learning capacity during this outbreak. The researcher employed a mix method design where the data obtained were presented in both quantitative and qualitative perspectives. There are total 30 higher education students chosen to be the subjects of the present study. The data were gathered through different instruments; questionnaire and semi structured interview. The questionnaire comprises five major aspects in measuring learners’ capacity in autonomous learning. In order to achieve the credibility of the data, the researchers’ employs triangulation of data. The results of the study showed that learners have the capacity of autonomous learning to some extent. Learners are quite self-directed in the aspects of defining content and progression, monitor the procedure of acquiring knowledge, and doing self-evaluation. Meanwhile, the aspects of setting objectives and selecting method to learn need to be improved. The findings imply that optimization of learning is a must despite all boundaries that challenge both learners and educators.

Abstract

Speaking as a language skill has been considered the most difficult one to master by the students especially in Songserm Wittaya School Songkla, Thailand. It was found that the majority of the students found it difficult to speak English fluently. As a productive skill, speaking is complex because learners need to acquire the accuracy and fluency in speaking. However, one EFL class showed a bit difference in the ability of speaking English because of their reading intensity. The design of the research was descriptive qualitative. The data were collected by a questionnaire for intensive reading and an interview on speaking to 30 students at 4/3 grade. The results of this research in general revealed that most of the students at grade 4/3 Thailand are good in speaking English due to their intensive reading that reached 50%. It was clearly seen from the analysis of some aspects of speaking (pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension) in the interview section and questionnaire of reading intensity that 50% of the participants can speak English better through reading activity intensively. This finding implies that intensive reading has become a meaningful input for students’ speech production.
