Jurnal Entomologi Indonesia (JEI) publishes original research papers and short communications that covers the basic and applied aspect of insects and mites or other arthropods in agriculture, forestry, human and animal health, and natural resources and environmental management. The journal is published by Perhimpunan Entomologi Indonesia (Entomological Society of Indonesia). JEI was first published at the beginning of 2004 with twice per year in frequency on March and September. Since 2015, Jurnal Entomologi Indonesia has been published three times per year on March, July, and November.

Abstract

To study insect community at orok-orok plantation (Crotalaria striata) from different habitat, we observed insects that interacted with Crotalaria plantation. There were four habitat type that used in this research, habitat open area and others were agroforestry habitat. We counted about nine ordo from insect that interacted with Crotalaria plant. More than 70% member of ordo, include to Hymenoptera, specially Formicidae. Not all function member of the ordo that known, but some of them are pollinator, parasitoid, predator and herbivore.

Abstract

House fly (Musca domestica) is an important urban insect that can transmit various infectious diseases. This insect usually utilized organic wastes as nutrition source for their larvae. One of the main sources of organic wastes is livestock manure produced by animal farming located near human dwelling area. Thus, appropriate house fly population control program at animal farm is needed,based on information on the house fly’s life history. The research is focused on the development of house fly larvae reared with different livestock manures, such as cow, chicken, and horse. As comparison, rice bran were used as control. Results showed that larvae reared with horse manure has the shortest development time (5 days), with lowest larval survival rate (30%), pupal weight (6.8 ± 0.141 g), and weight of female imago (4.9 ± 0.14 g). This finding indicates the lowest nutrition value of horse manure for house flies larvae. Further research is needed to find the effect of manure to variables that directly influence population growth, such as fecundity of female flies and egg survivorship. These additional information on life history will help the design of appropriate house fly population management program for animal farm.

Abstract

Termite, is one of the most damaging pest for wood product. One of the common fumigant use to control termite is sulfuryl fluoride. The objective of this study were to determine the dose-exposure and time for sulfuryl fluoride to kill dry wood termite Cryptotermes cynocephalus Kemner and evaluate the ability of fumigant to penetrate a rubber wood block. Application and penetration of the fumigant was tested on a 10 cm depth wood block, and conducted with 5 varied doses (10−30 g/m3) and 4 varied exposure time (6−24 hours). Application of the fumigant were tested on an 5 and 2.5 cm depth wood block. Doses were applied using 4 (four) different doses (2−15 g/m3) and 4 varied exposure time (1−9 hours). The study was conducted using randomize completely design with factorials. Results showed the application of sulfuryl fluoride was effective in penetrate 10 cm depth of wood block. The dose that was effective was of 30 g/m3 with 18 hours exposure time or a dose of 15 g/m3 with 24 hours exposure time. Application of depth penetration of 5 cm effectively done by using a dose of 10 g/m3 with 9 hours exposure and depth penetration of 2.5 cm using a dose of 15 g/m3 with 6 hours exposure time. Dose-time relationship for application of sulfuryl fluoride to penetrate of 10 cm showed dose variable is a slightly more important than exposure time, while to penetration of 5 and 2.5 cm showed exposure time variable is a slightly more important than dose of fumigant.

Abstract

An examination of insect resistance was determined by several steps, i.e. standard sensitivity, resistance diagnosis, and determination of resistance level. Each phase was tested with feeding and residue contact methods at glass tube. Resistance ratio (RR) was determined by comparing LC50 value of field population with standard population. Field population of C. pavonana was classified resistant if it had RR 5 4. Biochemistry analysis of resistance was conducted to population of C. pavonana showing resistance to prophenophos insecticide. The activity analysis of acetylcholine esterase (ACHE), esterase, and Glutation Stransferase was done with spectrophotometer method. Insect which are resistant to prophenophos insecticide was tested for its sensitivity to Barringtonia asiatica seed extract. Result indicated that C. pavonana population from Pengalengan showed resistance to prophenophos synthetic insecticide. Using contact test, the highest resistance ratio value was 4.04, while by feeding assay the RR was 2.78. The study on biochemical resistance mechanisms of each field population of C. pavonana showed various activities of enzymatic detoxification. This could be due to the difference in the kind of insecticides exposed to each field population of C. pavonana. Since RR value from the contact test was higher than that of the feeding test, the resistance development of C. pavonana to synthetic insecticides was probably caused by physiological and biochemical changes in insect cuticle rather than the activity of detoxification enzyme. Methanolic seed extract of B. asiatica can be used as an alternative of resistance management of C. pavonana to prophenophos synthetic insecticide.

Abstract

Chili peppers (Capsicum annuum), in their many varieties, constitute a culturally and economically important horticultural crop in a number of countries. The Indonesian cayenne large red chili (Capsicum annuum var. annuum) is used widely in Indonesia mainly in cooking. There have been reports of increased infestation of large red chili by insect pests, particularly fruit flies. The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of five edible vegetable oils (palm oil, coconut oil, soybean oil, corn oil, and candlenut oil) and one non-edible vegetable oil (neem oil) in reducing landings, oviposition, and infestation by the Oriental fruit fly (Bactrocera dorsalis Hendel) in large red chili fruits. This lab-based experiment entailed exposure of large red chili fruits to 20 mature B. dorsalis females (14–21 days old) inside a 15-l plastic container. Six separate containers each held 10 large red chili fruits with a single oil treatment in each. Prior to exposure, each of the treated and control large red chili fruits was punctured once with a needle in order to create an opening for oviposition. Results indicate that the coconut oil formulation was most effective in preventing damage from B. dorsalis females, and reducing fruit fly landings, oviposition, and infestation.

Abstract

Natural Enemies Conservation: The Role of Neem-seed Extracts for Natural Enemies Conservation Used of Cotton Insect Pest Control. Insects associated with cotton plant are numerous, as the plant bears extrafloral nectar. More than 90 species of natural enemies are reported and identified. They could manage the cotton pest, keeping the pest population is under action threshold level when their presence is considered in scouting and action threshold concept. However, most of cotton farmers are insecticide-spray-minded people who think that insecticide sprays is a must in cotton cultivation. This behavior is unfavorable for the natural enemies in building their population so they can act as an effective mortality factor for the pest. Neem seed extract (NSE) is toxic to herbivores but relatively safe for natural enemies, so that it could be used as a substitute for synthetic chemical insecticides. Therefore, NSE is recommended to be used for conserving natural enemies in cotton agro ecosystem.

Abstract

Coal fly ash (CFA) can be used as a control agent of brown plant hopper (BPH) Nilaparvata lugens (Hemiptera; Delphacidae). This study was aimed to investigate the physiological disorders in BPH when exposed to CFA. The research was conducted by carrying out tests covering the mortality of BPH, measurement of BPH weight before and after CFA treatment, an analysis of the moisture content in BPH, an analysis of the BPH tissue, and a chemical analysis of BPH. The results of the study showed that the mortality rate of BPH after treatment was 71%. The physiological disorders due to CFA treatment was indicated by a 67.04% weight reduction as opposed to a 6.9% weight increase on the control specimens. The average moisture content of the treated BPH was significantly lower than that of the control specimens. CFA caused a shrinkage of body tissues and an increase in the contents of silica and alumina on BPH.

Abstract

Soil samples were collected from each plot at the two field sites at 0, 1, 3, and 5 months after planting, and at one-month intervals after harvest for three months. Soil suspension from each sample was mixed with agar based diet (1 g soil/20 ml soil-diet mixture) then was presented to neonate larvae of H. armigera. Two reference standards were used, i.e. pure Cry1Ac protein (0.165 x 104 to 1.436 x 105 ng per ml of the proteindiet mixture) and non-Bt-soil spiked with Cry1Ac protein (0.11 x 104 to 9.573 x 104 ng per ml of the soil-diet-mixture). Larval mortality was recorded at 7 days of treatment. In both reference standards, mortality of H. armigera larvae occurred in a concentrationdependent fashion, i.e. larval mortality increased with the increase in Cry1Ac protein concentration, with LC50 of 0.95 x 104 and 1.65 x 104 ng/ml, respectively, for the pure protein and spiked non-Bt-soil standards. Result of the bioassay of soil samples from the field sites showed the residues from both transgenic cotton soils did not cause any mortality (0%) in the test insects. This indicates that the concentrations of Cry1Ac residue in soil at the study sites were very low (in the second standard, Cry1Ac at a concentration of 0.33 x 104 ng/ml caused about 10% larval mortality).

Abstract

As the largest group of biological control agents, Parasitic Hymenoptera play important role in controlling pest outbreak in agricultural habitat. Unfortunately, there is lack of information about how these parasitoids occur in agricultural habitat related to condition of surrounding habitat and phenology of crop plant. The objective of this research was to study the effect of rice field surrounding habitat and age of rice plant on the diversity of Parasitic Hymenoptera. Research area was located in Carang Pulang Village, Dramaga, Bogor. We selected four blocks which represented different of habitat condition and age of rice plant. Each block was set six yellow pan traps (with minimum distance 20 meter) and one malaise trap. Sampling of insects were conducted weekly from 6 to 12 week after planting. From this research, we collected 1,833 individual of Hymenoptera (without ants) belong to 9 superfamilies, 23 families, and 216 species. Parasitic Hymenoptera was more abundant (96%) and species rich (84%) than Aculeata. Rice field surrounding habitat (block) and age of rice field significantly affect the diversity of Parasitic Hymenoptera. We found positively correlation between age of rice plant and species richness of Parasitic Hymenoptera.

Abstract

Control of Plutella xylostella L. can be done both biologically and chemically. Biological control is generally done by utilizing plant extracts to kill insect pests. This study aims to determine the effect of the extract of seeds on the mortality and development of parasitoid Diadegma semiclausum Hellen and its host, P. xylostella. The effect of Srikaya seed extract on P. xylostella larvae in the initial stage was tested by foliar rest method, while the residue method on the glass surface was used to test the effect of the extract of seed extract of Srikaya on the death of imago D. semiclausum. The effect of seed extract on parasitization and development of D. semiclausum was performed by exposing P. xylostella larvae contaminated by the extract of srikaya seeds in sublethal concentration (LC5 and LC10) in imago D. semiclausum. The results showed that extract of srikaya seeds at a concentration of 0.0632–0.1% at 24-hour contamination affected the death of the larva P. xylostella and the imago parasitoids D. semiclausum. Imago parasitoids are more susceptible to increased concentration of extracts than P. xylostella larvae. The developmental resistance of P. xylostella by Srikaya seed extract at concentrations used is generally unreal. Similarly, the barriers to the development of parasitoid D. semiclausum in hosts contaminated with sublethal concentrations (LC5 and LC10) of seed extract are generally not significantly different. The presence of Srikaya seed extract in the host also has no significant effect on the extent of parasitization, cocoon length, cocoon width, and cocoon weight. Therefore, there is a possibility to chemically and biologically integrate P. xylostella control.
