Abstract

The article reports the classroom visit project experienced by 31 Thai university English major students taking a course titled Introduction to English Language Teaching (EN 391) during the first semester of the academic year 2016. The students worked in small groups, contacted the schools asking permission to observe the English classes. They observed the classroom and took notes of what they have seen and learned. They, then, in a small group, wrote a report and took turns sharing their findings in the classroom. After the completion of the project, the students were asked to answer the questionnaires with two open-ended questions addressing the experience and general impressions of the project. Data were analysed using basic descriptive statistics and content analysis. The results showed that the majority of the students had positive attitudes toward the class visit experience. They perceived it as being useful and memorable. The paper also discusses the implications of the findings.

Abstract

This paper offers some concepts into what way for directions in bringing texts together. What call up our interest is curiosity to know about others writings. This brings us to intertextuality. What is intertextuality? How many types of intertextuality? How does it work in achieving an active reading and making a thoughtful writing? Texts viewed before are lacking in independent meaning, according to Kristeva, Barthes, Riffaterre, and other pioneers of the field, every text has its meaning only in relation to other texts. I refer to different genres of intertextual models and then explain these intertext’smodels in classic literatures and modern literatures terms of enhancing reading development that are the keys of mature and thoughtful writing. My findings indicate that intertextuality integrated with the abilities of the process of thinking abilities that the reading process comprises and the hallmark of mature and thoughtful writing. This means that intertextuality helps gradually mastering the forms of thought in reading and writing.

Abstract

The use of classical myths is one of the ways that a lot of writers have adopted in composing their literary works. They are regarded as one of the main important sources that provide writers with many topics to explore, themes to depict, characters to portray, and motifs to analyze. However, some writers do not move beyond the events of the myth; they attempt to deal with it without violating its literary elements and events. On the other hand, some adapt its various elements to create a new work. In this paper, Al-Hakim's play Pygmalion is at the centre. It attempts to investigate, explore and analyze Al-Hakim's use of the myth of Pygmalion in creating his play Pygmalion. It also attempts to examine whether he adopts the same version of the Greek myth of Pygmalion or he violates its elements to create a new treatment of the myth.

Abstract

This paper describes an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) speaking and listening test designed and piloted through the mobile application Telegram. The test was designed to diagnose the speaking and listening skills of first-year students at the Indonesian university UNIROW Tuban before they arrive on campus. The mobile delivery of the test, which can be accessed by smart phone and computer, was aimed to evaluate if learning apps can increase communicative learner interaction with authentic materials in English. The mobile test takes advantage of the vast amount of multimedia that can be transferred online, such as video and podcasts. Test-takers respond to Speaking Section prompts by recording themselves and answer Listening Section questions by clicking on the correct multiple choice options. All test-taker responses are sent to the administrator of the test, created through an inline Telegram bot. After piloting the test with students in a first-year conversation class at UNIROW Tuban, the test underwent a series of analyses, including item facility, item discrimination, split-half reliability, inter-rater reliability, and subtest relationships. These analyses are important for verifying the test’s validity, reliability, and practicality. Overall, the test seems to be an important tool not only for diagnosing students listening and speaking needs, but also to increase interest in learning and practicing conversational English. Although the test was designed for one university in particular, it (along with variations) can be used in similar contexts throughout the world.

Abstract

The central objective of this study was to investigate the influence of gender on English language proficiency scores among Thai students in Bangkok. To bring this research ambition to fruition, a mixed methods research design was utilised to collate qualitative and quantitative data. The former was gathered from interviews with 20 well-established educatorsto canvass their perceptions regardingthe potential role of gender in students’English language proficiency levels. The quantitative data involved t-test analyses (0.05) of students’ formal English examination results from three separate sample clusters (N = 863), which included: (1) senior high school students (n = 72); (2) third year private university students (n = 684); and, (3) first year students at a government university (n = 107). The findings disclosed that (1) English teachers distinguished girls as ostensibly more attentive and more highly motivated; (2) female students’ English proficiency scores were significantly higher than their male counterparts across both university clusters, and, marginally higher at the high school level; and therefore,(3) the students’ formal examination results added firm support the educators’ perception that female students demonstrate greater proficiency in English due to exhibiting higher degrees of motivation and focus

Abstract

Many studies have been conducted on evaluating the quality of a teacher-made test. Item analysis is crucial for making a good test, and improving test items. In response to the advantages of item analysis, this study looks at the theoretical and practical benefits of item analysis. The objectives were to know and to describe the extent of the quality of the English test items concerning difficulty level and discriminating power. This research used descriptive quantitative analysis. A total of 171 respondents of second-year students at MAN 1 Kota Tangerang Selatan 2017/2018 academic year were included in this study. The findings indicate that the English mid-term test has 24 acceptable items (80%) from the quality excellent, good, and satisfactory. Then, three items (10%) have poor quality, and three items (10%) have very poor quality, or in the negative value on discrimination index to the extent that the items are eliminated. It is proven by statistical data that they fail to distinguish between students who are knowledgeable and those students who are not on the base of how well they know the materials that have been tested.
