Abstract

Figurative language is way to express an idea or concept through the usage of language. The aimed of this study was to find types of figurative language and the differences of figurative language used in pop-punk song lyric by Paramore and Blink 182. This paper only focuses on four common types of figurative language proposed by GorysKeraf (2009) in order to create the easier analysis.There are metaphor, simile, personification and hyperbole. The result of this research was the writer found 13figurative languages in Paramore songs lyric and 18figurative languages in Blink 182 songs lyric. The types of figurative language in Paramore were: Metaphor (10), Simile (1), Personification (1) and Hyperbole (1), while the types of figurative language in Blink 182 were: Metaphor (13), Simile (3), Personification (2), and there was no Hyperbole form. Based on the result finding, it can be concluded that Paramore and blink 182 more dominantly used metaphor expression in their lyric. Then Blink 182 used more figuratives language and poetic languang in their lyric than Paramore,although both of these band come from different generation, it doesn’t influence or change their style in using figurative language in their lyric, both of these pop-punk songs always used metaphor dominantly in their lyric.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze the conversational implied meaning or called implicature in conversation between buyers and sellers in the traditional market of Lubuk Alung based on Grice‟s Cooperative Principle and its maxims. The main objective of this study was to analyza how utterance can go beyond its literal meaning by flouting some maxims by the speakers since flouting of maxims can generate implicature. Moreover, this study also analyzed the comparisons between male and female in flouting of maxim in buyers’ and sellers’ interaction in traditional market. The type of this research was descriptive qualitative by explaining conversational implicature without statistical procedure and counting process. Data from this study were obtained from conversations between buyers and sellers in traditional market that have been recorded by the researcher. After analyzing the data, researcher found the speakers (sellers and buyers) were more often flouted the maxim of manner. In contrast, maxim of quality was the fewest to be flouted by the speakers. In the conversation that have been recorded, female are more often flouted the maxim than male because female were more likely to bargain in the traditional market than male.

Abstract

Abbreviation adalah memendekkan kata atau frasa tertentu. Tujuan dari penelitian ini untuk mengelompokkan singkatan ke dalam beberapa tipe singkatan  yang dikemukakan oleh Weakly (2006) dan Schendl (2001:28-29) yang dikenal dengan Types of Abbreviation. Penelitian ini termasuk dalam penelitian deskriptif berdasarkan fakta atau yang sebenarnya mengenai singkatan tersebut. Dalam hasil penelitian penulis menemukan kelima tipe abbreviation tersebut. Lima tipe tersebut ialah: tempel kata, akronim, inisial, kontraksi dan campuran. Tipe yang paling banyak di ditemukan ialah Initialism dengan persentase (41%). Penulis juga menemukan pergeseran singkatan yang lazim digunakan dalam rubrik politik di koran Kompas yakninya bentuk pergeseran pada dua tipe. Dua tipe tesebut adalah: initialism dan blends. Yang paling bannyak digunakan pada pergeseran singkatan ini ialah initialism (71.4%).

Abstract

This article discusses about Minangkabau language, especially semi dead words that occur in Sungayang District, Tanah Datar, West Sumatra. Semi dead words are words that are almost dead because the younger generation does not understand at all with the words, while the older generation still uses this word for daily communications. The author discusses what words were used by people in Sungayang Sub-district in daily communication, but these words were not used in the colloquial by the people of this district in the present. In writing this article, the authors are assisted by some informants to provide data information about the words that are not used anymore by people in Sungayang Sub-district in the present time. Then the authors grouped the data according to the type and factors causing the occurrence of semi dead words on the words. The results of this study indicate that the lexicons change (lexical change 89.61%) is the type of word that is almost dead (semi dead words) the most dominant in Sungayang district. Contact language (language contact 89.61%) is the most dominant factor of the occurrence of the word almost dead (semi dead words) in Sungayang District.

Abstract

Skripsi ini merupakan analisa novel The Convert (2011) karya Deborah Baker. Permasalahan yang dibahas dalam analisa ini adalah sejauh mana novel ini merefleksikan usaha dalam mencapai tujuan menjadi seorang muslim. Tujuan analisa ini adalah (1) mengungkapkan sejauh mana tokoh utama dalam novel merefleksikan Exertion, (2) menunjukkan kontribusi elemen fiksi dalam mengungkap permasalahan Exertion. Analisa ini menerapkan text-based interpretation yang mempertimbangkan elemen-elemen fiksi dan unsur-unsur di dalam teks secara spesifik sehingga memberikan kontribusi dalam pengungkapan makna dan context-based interpretation dengan mengaitkan konsep Personality yang dikemukakan oleh Victor Frankl. Hasil analisa menunjukkan bahwa tokoh utama berhasil melakukan usaha untuk bisa menjadi seorang muslim dan melakukan perubahan dari kehidupan lama dan memasuki kehidupan baru dan menyesuaikan diri dengan kehidupan barunya yang di pengaruhi oleh lingkungan sekitar dengan cara pindah keyakinan, mengubah pola pikir, menyesuaikan diri di kehidupan baru. Keinginan, niat, dan tekat yang kuat dari tokoh untuk berubah ke arah yang lebih baik sangat berperan penting dalam proses usaha menjadi seorang Muslim.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui tipe-tipe perubahan bahasa pada level kosakata dalam Bahasa Kerinci yang ditemukan di dialek Pulau Tengah dan sikap penutur terhadap perubahan bahasa yang terjadi. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah deskriptif dengan data penelitian berupa kosakata lama dalam dialek Pulau Tengah yang mengalami perubahan dan jawaban dari para penutur yang mengemukakan pendapat mereka terhadap perubahan bahasa pada level kosakata dalam dialek Pulau Tengah. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa ada dua tipe perubahan bahasa pada level kosakata yang ditemukan pada dialek Pulau Tengah yaitu penambahan kosakata baru dan kata-kata yang hilang. Bagian-bagian dari penambahan kosakata baru yang ditemukan adalah peminjaman dari Bahasa Indonesia, peminjaman dari Bahasa Minangkabau, penciptaan dari merek, dan penciptaan kata baru yang tidak memiliki alasan spesifik. Berikutnya, ditemukan dua macam sikap penutur terhadap perubahan yang terjadi yaitu positif dan netral dengan jumlah sikap positif lebih banyak daripada netral.

Abstract

This research is rooted in a number of language phenomena that occur in society. The phenomena can be categorized into word shifts. The word shift occurs because of age shifts, status differences and so forth. The contents of the word will be grouped into the type and cause of the word changes in this paper. The method used is descriptive research method. The data source of this research is the young generation and the older generation in Aripan, Solok. To obtain accurate data, the process was conducted by interviewing 10 informants consisting of 5 young people and 5 older generations. From the results of the discussion, the authors found 3 types of changes that occur in these words, namely lexical change (95), sound change (4), and lexical and semantic change (1). In addition, from the discussion also found 2 factors causing the change in the words, namely language contact and spelling pronunciation.

Abstract

Indonesian language consists of some different languages and dialects. This variety of language leads Indonesian people into bilingual, even multilingual community. The diglossic situation cannot be separated in daily life of people who lived in bilingual or multilingual society, such as Javanese language. The difference use of Krama (H variety), Madya (M variety) and Ngoko (L variety) obligated the speakers to know how to use the language function according to place and condition of the participants. This study investigates the profile of diglossic Javanese in three generations. This study aims to find out (1) the profile of diglossic Javanese, (2) the variety of language choice, and (3) the factor that affected the language choice. This research is a kind of descriptive research, because the researcher described and analyzed the profile of diglossic Javanese in three generation. The findings of this study reveal that in the first generation they are use H variety and M variety in communication, in the second generation they are use all of the three varieties depending whom they speak to. Meanwhile, in the third generations they mostly use ngoko (L variety). The used of krama lexicon was replacing with the lexicon of ngoko in third generation. There are several factors that have contributed to the respondents’ choice of using a certain variety when communicating. The used between the three varieties took place depending mostly on the addressee, the situation and the purposes of communication.
