Abstract

 This study analyses the issue of coming into public area done by women characters. The aims of this study are to find out how far the two women characters exposed the topic of coming into public area. Fictional devices such as character, plot (conflict), and setting are used to analyse this novel. The analysis is done through text and context-based interpretation. Those elements are analysed based on how characters are going out from domestic area and coming into public area. This study relates to the concept of Marxist-feminis by Holmstorm, C. Delphy, and Booth. The result of this study shows that the women characters success in leaving domestic and coming into public area. Though cultural condition limit them, they struggle to fight to be independent.

Abstract

 Slang is the informal language which is used in a particular group of people especially used by teenagers in their activities to communicate each other. This research paper aimed to identify the characteristics of slang and the dominance slang used in Eminem songs. This research paper used Abadi’s (2009, p.17) theory about the characteristics of slang. This study used qualitative approach with descriptive method. The writer found that the total data of slangs in Eminem songs were 47 slangs. There were 13 data of creativity,27 data of flippant, 5 data of fresh, and 2 data of onomatopoeic. The most dominance slang used in Eminem songs is Flippant.

Abstract

This study examine words experience meaning change and types of meaning change in traditional song from Minangkabau. This research intend to find out the words experience meaning change and kind of meaning change on the Minangkabau traditional song lyrics. This research is done based on many people who do not know the meaning of a word in traditional songs of Minangkabau. This research use qualitative descriptive method to analyze data in written form, describe data, and process data based on the existing context in traditional Minangkabau song lyrics. Then, this research use the theory proposed by McMahon (1999). McMahon proposes 4 types of meaning change: extension and restriction, amelioration and pejoration. The data in this research are the lyrics of Minangkabau traditional song. The songs consist of 30 songs. The findings of this study are, there are change of meaning and type of meaning change exist in traditional songs Minangkabau. There are 15 words belong to extension, 2 words belong to amelioration, and 3 words belong to pejoration.

Abstract

This research aimed to analyze the development of speech disfluency of Zayn Malik, ex-One Direction member, regarding his anxiety disorder issue since 2015 – 2017. The types of this research was descriptive qualitative through longitudinal analysis. Data for this research were 281 utterances from trancriptions of Zayn Malik’s speech based on ten videos taken from Youtube since 2015 until 2017. The result showed that there were 1369 types of speech disfluency. Silent pause and filled pause gave huge contribution to disrupt Zayn Malik’s speech. The most common types and the highest types of speech disfluency produced by Zayn Malik was filled pause that was 627 types or 72%. Surprisingly, Zayn Malik developed more silent pause than filled pause since the last of 2016 until the middle of 2017, and he no longer produced types of stuttering like prolongation or block since the middle of 2016. It proved that Zayn Malik is indeed a non-stuttered speaker. In relation to anxiety and speech disfluency, Zayn Malik were more anxious to speak in front of many audiences or with men interviewers because his speech disfluency increased; while it decreased when he talked to woman interviewer or a machine by seeing the result that he produced more silent pause during the interview. Hence, the best way to overcome stuttering for anxiety sufferer is by producing more silent pause during speech in order to create a good speaking performance.

Abstract

The research aimed to find the types of language style and the frequency of the style used by facebook users in Indonesia. The source of data in this research is facebook users in Indonesia. This research focused on language style used by facebook users from the teenager to pre adult users in Indonesia. The writer used descriptive method which is describing the phenomenon based on the source of data. This research analyzed the status of the facebook users to find the types of language style and the most frequency style used by facebook users in Indonesia. On the analysis, the writer found that there are four language styles namely formal, consultative, casual, and intimate. Then, casual style is the mostly language style used by the speakers with percentage is about 70%. Furthermore, the writer found that the causes of casual is the mostly used by facebook users

Abstract

Euphemism is one of language phenomena that exists in society in order to keep the relationship in good harmony. This research aims to describe forms and functions of euphemism that are found in Celebrity News published in people.com website. This research is descriptive qualitative based on phenomena of euphemism in written language. Data of this research are words, phrases and sentences that contain euphemistic expression found in Celebrity News during February 2017.The result of the research shows that there are four forms and four functions of euphemism. The form of euphemism that is mostly found is semantic change, especially metaphorical transfer. The researcher also found various functions of euphemism. The function of euphemism that is mostly found is avoiding taboo.

Abstract

This paper discusses the elements of the paragraph in the editorial in Jakarta Post. Jakarta Post is one of the newspapers in Indonesia. The Jakarta Post is a daily English daily newspaper in Indonesia. The Jakarta Post started as a collaboration between four media in Indonesia by urging the Information Minister and politicians. The first edition was printed on April 25, 1983, spending several years with minimal advertising and increasing circulation. After a change in editor-in-chief in 1991, the Jakarta Post began to take a more vocal pro-democracy standpoint. For the validity of this paper, the analysis of the paper is published officially on legitimate online websites. In analyzing the data, I found some of the most frequently mentioned paragraph elements in the editorial. In Jakarta Post's most frequently published editorial is Minor Detail with frequency of 57 times (48%). While Major Detail appears 28 times (24%), then Topic Sentence appears 25 times (21%) and Thesis Statement appears 8 times (7%).

Abstract

The word address term is the word person use to call or greet others. Batak Toba language has various forms of greeting words used in communicating with someone. This study aims to find out the forms of the word greetings based on kinship or family system used by Batak Toba people who live in Padang Pasir Parupuk Tabing as nomads. This study will also explain and describe the communicative function the use of greeting. The method used in this research is descriptive method that describes and process data based on facts that exist in the field. This research is focused on the forms and functions of the address terms word in Batak Toba language. Data were collected through interview with some informants and made notes. In this study, the informants are Batak Toba People who has blood relations and marriage. Data were analyzed based on the forms of address terms based on kinship system of Batak Toba. The results of research indicate that there are various address terms used by Batak Toba ethnic especially in kinship relationship based on lineage and marriage that used by Batak Toba people. Interestingly, there are several forms of greeting words that are similar to each other.

Abstract

Presupposition as property of language is used to build and influence audience’s opinion by the language users. In the news, presupposition triggers is a sign to trigger the use of presupposition. The purpose of this study is to analyze the use of presupposition triggers in Israeli-Palestinian news in the two online news; Al-Jazeera and Fox news. This research used the descriptive qualitative method. The data of this research is the Israeli-Palestinian news in two online Al-Jazeera and Fox news. The news that is analyzed are two news from Al-Jazeera and one news from Fox news. This data were analyzed based on Khaleel’s theory (2010) about presupposition triggers. The results of analysis showed that in Al-Jazeera, the highest occurrence is existential (definite description) that occurred 28 times (43%), and 20 times (40%) in Fox news. In addition both Al-Jazeera and Fox news used change of state verb in lexical, and adverbial clause in structural as the dominant types. In contrast, the difference on the two online news is the use of verb of judging.

Abstract

Borrowing word is one way of overcome vocabulary that does not exist in the destination language. In addition, word borrowing is used to enrich vocabulary in a language. Borrowing vocabulary can happen from local language to national or foreign language, and the reverse happens. The purpose of this paper is to know the words borrowed from the local language (Minangkabau) into the national language (Bahasa Indonesia). This research focuses only on the sounds and shifting of meaning. Many of the words in detail are 70 words out of a total of about 929 words (8.71%) accompanied by source from KBBI. In word borrowing from Minangkabau language to Indonesian there are 25 (38,71%) words that are adopted in its entirety, and 45 words (64.29%) words that go through the process of adjustment of meaning and rules (adaptation). there are 2 words that experience narrowing meaning and 1 word experiencing the expansion of meaning. It can be concluded that there are two vocabulary borrowing processes from the Minangkabau language to the language without changing the core meaning of the word. Both processes are adoption and adaptation.
